954.0. "Things to do with hair" by MRED::SMALLER (Dress in black) Mon Aug 05 1991 08:46

I'd like to get a hair extension for my hair. One of those long, thin
braids, with maybe even a bead or two.

Does anyone know of a hairdresser who does this kind of thing?

    Thanks,
    Sheri

last year at King Richard's Faire (renaissance faire down in Carver,
Mass., which is open from labor day until columbus day on the
weekends), I got a "fairy tail". They attached a tail of long fake
hair that matched mine to a small piece of my own hair just behind my
ear with a lump of wax. Then they braided it and put a tip with some
beads on. It came down to my waist. After about 2 months I took it
off but I know people who occasionally wash and rebraid theirs so it
doesn't look scruffy and they've lasted up to a year.

Well, if you don't get anything firmer than this, the copy center guy
who used to work in MRO1, by the name of John, also works in a shop
in either Shrewsbury or Worcester, and he does 'em. However, I don't
know his last name and as of today he is starting as a permanent DEC
employee. I can ask around; if I get any more info, I'll post it here.

Hey!! New Horizons in Marlboro! Is there a guy named Randy that
works or worked there?? I think I went to him a few years ago and
I just remember he was incredible!! Real fun place! And one of the
very few salons that I've walked out of and was able to not hide my
head!! Randy really knows how to do hair the way you want it!

I'm just curious 'cuz I've been wondering lately if he is still there...
The only reason I never went back is cuz I live in Leominster and
Marlboro is kinda far to go to get your hair done....maybe I'm not as
    fussy as I think!!

Well, Randy's at a Place called New Horizons. (Does it have a number
attached, like New Horizons II?) Anyway, it's in beautiful
not-quite-downtown Marlborough so it should be about 45 - 60 minutes
from Lowell, or less if you drive faster than 60-65.

Take 495 south to the Rte. 20 East exit. (The Rte. 20 West exit is the
first Rte. 20 exit, Rte. 20 East follows.) At the end of the ramp, you
are deposited onto Rte. 20. Follow it around the lake and up the small
hill, curves to the right a bit and levels out and begins a slow
descent. Pass the library on the left. The next intersection with a
light is Pleasant Street. St. Mary's Credit union is on the left. Go
left. I believe there is another intersection with a traffic light
(Lincoln St.); pass through. New Horizons is on the left at the next
more-or-less major intersection, which (if memory serves me) also has a
light. It's in a dinky little shopping plaza; the shop on the right end.
You can call them at 481-3334.

unfortunately, you are pretty much dealt the hair deal upon conception - it
is genetics that control thickness and texture. How to make hair grow the
fastest? BE HEALTHY. Drink your water, exercise, eat your veggies, don't
smoke, don't drink alcohol, don't eat/drink caffine. You know, that boring
stuff. How to make hair grow longer? Funny enough, regular trims to
control split ends are your best friend when you decide to grow hair...yes,
you gotta cut it to make it grow longer. In spite of the junk they tell
ya on TV, there ain't no cure for split ends but cutting them off. If you
don't, the hair shaft will snap in two at the weakened point, and hair growth
will be lost. You also help hair grow by washing with mild, ph balanced
shampoos, using de-tangler rinses as needed to prevent tangles when combing
hair, don't perm or color treat (both damage hair shafts and therefore
promote breakage), and NEVER BRUSH HAIR WHEN WET - always comb gently with
a wide-toothed comb. Dry it naturally to avoid drying out hair and making
more split ends, and finally, protect hair from the sun, etc.

After you follow all these rules...be patient. Hair grows during the "fast
growth" season approx. 1/16 - 1/8 inch/month...if optimum health is maintained.
It grows somewhat slower for most of the year. I know, it sounds horribly slow,
but it does add up. You will eventually get a head full of longer hair..

There is something you can do to make your hair grow faster. It
    sounds bizarre.

Wear your hair up. In a roll, in a bun, in braids, in a gathered
mass of little tiny curls, whatever.

I barely believed this when I first bought my hair sticks (for wearing
my hair up) as various wearers of up-hair hung around and chatted, and
explained why they believed their hair was growing faster. Now, I've
worn my hair up for years, in a side roll, and my hair is longer on the
right than on the left, despite having been trimmed into evenness twice.

   RE: ::wilde

Genetics do determine possible hair color and quality but for real
life situations diet and hormonal makup will have a more definitive
effect. The hormones related to secondary sex characteristics and
metabolism are by far the most influenial. Diet is also a major
factor malnutrition will wreck hair in short order, but more commonly
deficenties of one or two items can cause a startling change.
When it come to hair you are what you eat is no joke.

Hmmm ... it occurs to me how cats frequently wash themselves
    immediately after eating.

So all cat food manufacturers really have to do is put some
normal hair conditioner *in* the cat food, and the cat will apply
it directly to the fur after eating.

By the same line of thought, Grecian Formula could come out with
a line of cat food for your older, greying cat...

There's some good intelligent information about nutritional
supplements and external stuff for happy hair in Leslie Kenton's
"Joy of Beauty". A dippy name for a book that is NOT a traditional
"pretty-up" book but rather a look at all kinds of women's
beauty (internal and external) and taking care of yourself in *every* way.

It's excellent - as are all her other books (co-written with her

There's a beauty school in Worcester (used to be Wilfrid Beauty Academy,
now under new management and I forget the name). Nearly EVERY hairdresser
in Worcester learned hir trade there... which means that nearly every
hairdresser in Worcester has the same @#*$!! style (whether you want it
or not!)

Probably the best way to find a good one is to look around you, find
someone whose hairstyle you like, and ask hir where s/he goes to get
it done.

Of course, I can't vouch for the effectiveness of this method since
I don't get my hair cut anymore 8-)

Some hairstyles cannot be duplicated on another.....
I know this from past (painful) experiences....
I wanted the Farrah Fawcett look, but you need thick hair
for it.....(mine's that fine, limp mousy brown stuff)
After having long straight hair that does nothing in response
to curling irons, hairspray, etc, except look clumpy, I wanted
curls and body, like you see on *those* TV women, lots of
spirally, fluffy, wavy long curls!!! After three hours of torture,
also known as going for a perm, I ended up with frizzy, split
ended, broken off not even long anymore hair that is only now
    recovering two years later....

    And now I want to change the color! (-; or maybe Oh no! O-;

Now that you mention it, I did notice that your hair was, um,
rather on the long side! (-8
Seriously, it hides too much of your face, w/the beard and
all....How about I race you to the nearest salon! (-8

Yer right.... the other half of the equation is finding a hair stylist
who's professional enough to tell you when something WON'T work!

(Reminds me of a movie I saw on cable once... one of the main
characters was a hairstylist. At one point a customer -- a pale,
fat woman with a most un-Farrah-like doughy round face -- asked
her, "Will this hairstyle make me look just like Farrah?" The
hairstylist just sorta rolled her eyes on that one...)

> Seriously, it hides too much of your face, w/the beard and

Well, I do trim the beard myself from time to time... and it IS
a bit overdue (as soon as I can wrestle the hedge clippers from
Tamara... 8-) ). As for the hair, I've taken to tying it back,
although I may have had it out when I was visiting you...
