Gotta have at least one big mountain to climb, for the view, the

sounds like Fantasy Island to me without Mr. Rourke and Tatoo of course.
I'd have a fine Yamaha grand piano and plenty of musical dictation
paper and I'd compose some of the world's best music and there would
be no phone to interrupt my flow of creativity. Mail would only be
able to get in and out of the island through a floating bottle, if
it made it at all. The only thing in my mail these days are bills
anyway so it wouldn't be any great loss if the mail never showed up.

I entered a note in CLO::MASSAGE and another once in
::HOLISTICS about research that has shown that there are two
"mandatory" physical (sensory) requirements. The first is
*motion*. Infants require motion. The SECOND requirement is
touch. Humans, as primates, will develop very, very poorly
(if at all) without human touch.
I have first-hand awareness of some of the research, having
once-upon-a-time met a man who was primarily responsible for a
good deal of research in this area (Dr. James Prescott.)

There has been some question in this topic about the relationship
between the Island and the Flotation Tank--is the Island within the
Flotation Tank, or is the Flotation Tank within the Island? As you can
tell by the time that I am posting this note, this issue is clearly of
such grave importance to me that it is keeping me up nights; however,
after considerable reflection, I would like to offer some tentative
philosophical speculations, specificaly from the perspective of
    Alfred North Whitehead's cosmology.

To start with, let us consider the the Island and the Tank as concrete
examples of finite actual entities (or "actual occasions", if you
perfer). I would like to suggest that both entities engage in a
process of mutual prehension during their respective processes of
concrescence. Thus the Tank occasion and the Island occasion are
related to one another internally, and together form a nexus. The
Island and the Tank share a conceptual prehension of an eternal object
which we can identify as "Serenity", which serves to guide their
respective subjective aims. Thus we can conclude that the Island is in
the Tank, and the Tank is in the Island, and thus together participate
in the creative advance of the world. While this conclusion may appear
confusing, I believe that it reflects the principle of universal
relativity which underlies the philosophy of organism.

Then again, I could be wrong.

    -- Mike

P.S. I'm on vacation this week. If you want to contact me, you may
actually see me at the Island, playing on the Moebius Water Slide.
Otherwise, you can leave a message for me at the shore; just wade out
into the water a bit, and then inscribe it on the incoming ocean waves
with your hand. Don't worry about getting your clothes wet--the sea
water there doesn't affect you, unless you want it to.

On the island is one nice shady spot with a built-in teleporter
that senses whenever someone is getting too serious and immediately
beams them to a spot 3 feet above the coldest pool in the stream.

Here in this corner of the island is a large grove of pines.
This is where I come to really open my ears to the small
sounds. For the pines are quiet, but definitely not silent.
No sounds of engines intrudes here. Small Black-capped Chicadees
flit from branch to branch. You may hear the call of a raven
overhead, throatier than their cousins, the crows. Stand still,
and you may catch a glimpse of the deer who come here to eat
the mushrooms that grow after the autumn rains. A soft rain
is really the best time to be here, the drops falling on the
trees is muted. Occasionally a drop falls through to the small
maples growing under the pine canopy, making a loud plop, a
sign of trees to come as the sucession of hardwoods changes
this to a very different place. But for now, the pines rule.
A red squirrel crosses from tree to tree, breaking a branch.
He chitters angrily at the tree that betrayed him. Amazing how
something so small can shatter such an enormous quiet. Finally
he leaves for the acorns on the hillside, leaving only the calm.
While I love the hardwood ridges with their views of the distance,
nothing comes close to the pines for quiet beauty, always a deep
green, with orange needles a carpet underfoot. Here a fern bobbing
autumn yellow, there a patch of mosses. Here, you do not look
	out, you look in.
