914.0. "Spiritual Journal Writing" by GALLAH::KAHN () Fri Jul 12 1991 15:51

I have been reading a book called "Life's Companion, Journal Writing
as a Spiritual Quest," by Christina Baldwin. It's about keeping a
journal that reflects and encourages your spiritual journey.

Has anyone here kept a spiritual journal? Does keeping a journal make
a difference in your journey? Has your journal been a source of any
experiences you don't think you would have had otherwise?

Do people have different experiences as they get older? Or is it
pretty much the same over the years?

What happens when you keep a journal? Do things also come out worse
for keeping a journal? Are there dangers?

Anyone care to sharing their experiences?

What is a spiritual jounal?

I write everything in my journal - what happens to me, how I feel, how others
tell me they feel and how I feel about that, the progress and back steps I've
made, etc.

I have discovered new things about myself *while* writing, and on rereading
various patterns in my life have become clearer to me.

I keep a journal. I keep my poetry and short stories in it.
I use it as a general diary ... I describe my meditations
and dreams. I write down all my Tarot and I Ching readings...
It's like a map pf my journey. Sometimes I re-read it
and see my progress... I refer to it when I am lost...

It's almost like a silent companion.

    with love,

D!, in my opinion yours *is* a spiritual journal. It chronicles the
growth of your spirit. I'm not one who believes "spiritual = religious"
at least not in the usual sense of "religious"

It took me a while before I realized what she meant by sprirtual
journey. First off, it isn't religion, unless your journey, or part
of it, is of religion.

Here are some quotes:

After the contents, she says "Throughout this book, I have chosen to
use the term 'the sacred' to mean whatever you mean by the words you
use for spirit."

p. 23 "Spiritual writing expands the interior conversation of
consciousness to include your relationship with the sacred. You are
no longer alone on the quest, or on paper. You are in conversation
with something you perceive as beyond, or deep within yourself. It is
the inclusion of the sacred that spiritualizes the writing."

p.23 Spiritual experience is one that is deeply integrative. "As we
take up writing, the sacred responds by using writing as a vessel, a
way to appear and interact in our lives."

p.49 "Through the desire to bear witness to experience, the journal
makes form, story and meaning out of silence."

p.85 "As you write your spiritaul histories, you may find events that
.... allowed you to touch the esoteric (point of mystical contact)
layer.... You need an environment that encourages you to see through
observance to mystery."

Does anyone work with this sort of journal? Have you tried working in a group?
