    "The International Astronomical Union is looking for suggestions for
    about 4000 names for features on Venus. They must be either goddesses
    or famous women (who have been dead at least three years). Send
    suggestions to Venus Names, Magellan Project Office, Mail Stop 230-201,
    Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109."

    Shouldn't this have gone in the "sexism is alive and living ..."
    topic?

    Not really. It is, after all, *Venus*, the one planet out of the nine
    that is named after a woman, and a goddess at that. It would make
    sense to keep with the theme.

    Besides, then when all us nasty women whiiiiine about everything being
    male oriented, Venus can be used to prove us all wrong!

	Naaaahhhh... that'd never work. :*] You'd just point out that it's
	named for the goddess of love and beauty, and is merely another
	manifestation ofthe  objectification of women.

	(of course, there's quite a few lesser bodies with female names;
	Ceres, Luna, Amalthaea, Io, Europa, Callisto, Miranda, Titania, and
	Nereid, for example.   Hmmmm...)
