Hello All, I'm planning a fund-raiser in Framingham on Friday, October 18th for the Waltham Battered Women's Support Committee and Sojourner house of Boston (a shelter for families in need). This fund raiser will be a contra dance & you are all invited to attend (singles are alwasy welcome - as well as couples) - it will be loads of fun! The reason I'm here today is to see if there is anyone in the audience that is a Framingham resident that would like to help sponsor me for the hall in the Center of Framingham so that I can get it donated to this wonderful cause. Please send me mail if you are interested. I will post another invitation note when everything is firmed up. Regards, Sandy

I just went contra dancing for the first time on Saturday. As near as I can tell, it is a superset of square dancing, and also includes circle and line dances. Lotso fun. D!

Contra dancing is done with two lines of dancers, with one's partner in the other line (Contra to each other). A dance consists of a set of figures which is done with your partner, and a couple next to you in the line. At the end of the set of figures, you and your partner will have traded place with the couple you just danced with. You begin the dance again with a new couple that is now next to you. This means that in the course of the music, you will have danced with just about every couple in your line, making for a very social evening. The figures are much more limited in number than square dancing, and many contra figures are also used in square dancing. Most folks can learn to contra-dance very quickly. At some contra-dances, some square dances are done, but these are much less complicated then those done in western square dancing. These squares are sometimes called "new england squares". There is a conference about contra dancing at: TOMK::TOMK$DKA300:[KRUPINSKI]CONTRA press kp7 or select to add it to your notebook. I would encourage the write of .0 to post a note about this dance in the above conference. Who'll be playing? Who'll be calling? Tom_K

thanks to TomK .4 for that nice description of Contra Dancing. It is loads of fun. I don't enjoy square dancing half as much - this is a very social dance and you dance with lots more folks than just your square of 8. I will post the dance in Contra dancing and other notes files as well when it is firmed up. I surprised to say I still don't have a sponsor for the hall in Framingham. I'll just keep up my search for the moment... I'll keep you all posted when everything is settled. thanks for the interest. Sandy |
