770.0. "On-going TMJ treatment" by LACV01::USHER () Mon Apr 15 1991 14:35

    I wanted to open a TMJ note to get some information on the treatment.
    I know theres another note in here somewhere way back but I wanted
    something more recent. I am wearing a repositioning splint at night
    and have been for 2 months. I had been doing great (only 1 headache)
    up until now. For the past few days I am getting all kinds of symptoms
    again. They all started after the last adjustment by my Ortho. I
    am going to give him a call but my question is is this normal to
    have slips backwards like this (I'm a little nervous). Has anyone
    ever had problems only after an adjustment. Any inputs welcome...

770.1What is TMJ?MR4DEC::MAHONEYTue Apr 16 1991 11:336
    Could you please explain what is a "TMJ" treatment?
    I have no idea of what is and thus don't know why you have to wear a
    repositioning splint at night...
    Sorry for my ignorance, but I'd rather ask than remaining ignorant...

    Re:.0

    I have had TMJ for a few years.....I've had ALOT of problems with it.
    I saw a specialist when I first knew I was having a problem - I was
    fitted with a splint as well - had many adjustments to alleviate the
    pain and headaches.....there's alot more that I went through, however
    I do have some advice on my experiences with TMJ....

    My family and I had moved to Milwaukee, WI and there they have TMJ
    clinics with several doctors working together (Dentist/TMJ specialist,
    MD, Physical Therapist, Oral Surgeon) - the first visit cost me over
    $1,000.00 and I went to this clinic for a little over a month - each
    visit though was very costly and seemed to help at times than at
    other times didn't seem to help at all. Then 20/20 had a special on
    TMJ, of which I taped and gave to the clinic as well, in showing that
    one woman who in a 3 year period of time had spent over $18,000.00 to
    help fix the TMJ and at that point found that she was no better than
    what she was when she first started treatment.

    I still have alot of problems from time to time, but I really feel
    that these experts don't know much about TMJ - it's a fairly new
    problem and I think they're still learning about it.

    I've actually seen sever Dentist/TMJ specialists and have really had
    much luck.

    My suggestion is stick with the spint therapy if it helps from time to
    time, but don't expect a cure.

TMJ = Tempero-mandibular Joint

named, like all joints, after the two bones that join there - the temporal
(skull), and mandible (lower jaw).

770.5I just had surgery for thisSOFBAS::PHILPFri Apr 19 1991 14:3325
Hello.

As I am writing this I am sitting here with my mouth wired shut having just
had surgery for TMJ on April 2nd. I will be back to work on April 22nd so
if anyone has any particular questions feel free to send mail.

I had tried for several years to avoid having surgery for this and I am so
glad now that I finally went through with it. The surgeon was wonderful and
I can already tell the difference. I had surgery at Beth Israel hospital in
Boston.

I tried the splint route but it didn't help. My jaw was just not aligned
correctly and nothing would change that. I will say though that the surgeon
did the surgery on my upper jaw when all other surgeons had said it was a
lower jaw problem. I'm glad I waited...the upper jaw was the problem.

It is very frustrating to deal with the frequent headaches and jaw popping
from this and I know that many people have experienced varied degrees of
"healing" from zilch to total recovery.

I don't know if I've offered any assistance here...
