764.0. "Walk for Women's Lives - Sunday April 28th, 1991" by LEZAH::BOBBITT (waves become wings) Mon Apr 08 1991 17:57

    re: 32.135

The Walk for Women's Lives will help raise money for organizations
whose funding has been cut in recent months. Some of these groups are:

    - Lowell Rape Crisis Services
    - Support Committee for Battered Women, Waltham
    - Alternative House, Lowell
    - Metro West Women's Protective Services

The length of the walk is three miles. It is a handicapped-accessible
    walk through historic Concord, Massachusetts.

The walk begins at 1 p.m.
There will be a rally at 3 p.m. featuring:
Molly Yard, president of the National Organization for Women
    	Lt. Governor Evelyn Murphy
    	Local Recording Artists

You can call 508-264-4NOW to get a walk pledge kit, or write

    Walk for Women's Lives
    83 Parkhurst Road, Suite 106, Box 2100
    Chelmsford, MA 01824-0900

This is sponsored in cooperation with the Acton, Lexington and Greater
Lowell Chapters of the National Organization for Women and the Bedford
Chapter of the American Association of University Women.

Peggy Leedberg actually gave me all this information, so if you have
any questions, I could put you in touch with her (or you could see her
    at the gathering on Friday).

If you don't wish to walk, or don't live in the area, perhaps you would
think about sponsoring a walker (such as myself, or E Grace Noonan,
whose birthday it will be that day - what a way to celebrate!).

And I'm playing at the pre-walk rally at 12:30, and after the walk
there will be more music (in addition to the speeches by Molly Yard
    and Evelyn Murphy).

I've never plugged something so many times before. This is a really
big deal for me, and I'm hoping to see some friendly faces in the
    audience.

I want to go for the walk and to hear Justine sing. But I need a ride.
Is anyone from Lowell, Chelmsford or neighborhood going, that can give
    me ride?

    Thanks

The weather waas great! Thewalk was great! the entertainment was
great! And someone that day matched every contribution that came in
(wow!). I think this, even now being called the "First Annual Walk for
Women's Lives" raised $18,000. An impressive sum! Later at the rally
we heard from Ev Murphy, people representing the crisis centers and
shelters who would benefit from the money, survivors, and a speaker
from MESA was there (YAY!). In addition, there was some photo-stringer
from some newspaper who took my name down cause I guess he took my
picutre - if y'all see me in some obscure paper, send me a copy of the
article/pic. My parents would be SO proud!

I'm enthused to do it again next year!

764.5How many walked?TOOK::SANKARArundhati SankarMon Apr 29 1991 14:2615
Any idea how many people walked ?

There is going to be another walk for a similar cause in Lawrence on June 23rd.
It will be a 5 mile walk. We are in the middle of our planning cycle.
As soon as we get the papers printed, I will post it here.

We are calling it Walk Against Domestic Violence, money will help
Women's Resource Center and a shelter home.

Hope it turns out as well as the one!!!

    Arun.

I heard there were a little over 300 people. I had expected to see a
larger crowd. They did collect a lot of money. $18000.00

If anyone lives in the Concord area and/or sees anything in the local
newspapers about yesterday's walk (especially if it mentions me -ok,
I want to see my name in the newspaper - this was a big gig for me),
would you let me know or hang onto a copy of the article for me?
The local Cable company (Nashoba Cable?) taped it and is planning to
    air it sometime.

    Thanks,

    Justine

Thanks, also, to all the Womannoters who came out to walk and hear me
play! My set went really well, and I made some great contacts, and I
got to support an important cause! Molly Yard and Evelyn Murphy were
wonderful, and the women who told their personal stories were
    very moving.
