726.0. "Support Network for Single Parents?" by KAHALA::CAMPBELL_K (Little things DO matter!) Tue Mar 12 1991 10:59

Hi. I'm a single parent, or as Louise Dickinson Rich calls it
"Only parent". The kids and I moved into our own place about
a month ago, and about the same time I started a new job. We
haven't had our own place since 1986. The boys are 5 and 7.
They really are great kids, and I love them dearly. However,
lately I feel extremely overwhelmed, and I am looking for a
some kind of support network. Does anyone know of an In-Dec
support group, or notesfile that I can get in touch with?

    Help! And thanks in advance...

Hi Kim. I too, am an "only parent". Sometimes it's rough. I'm of the
noncustodial variety. I don't know of a local support network, but your
EAP office may help. Also, there are some notes files that may help.

    They are MRDATA::PARENTING,  DLOACT::BLENDED_FAMILIES, and
SPYDER::NON_CUSTODIAL_PARENTS. This last one will appear in your
notebook without the "S" at the end, but it is there. Non of these
files is exactly single parent specific, but they may be able to help
you and you should be able to get lots of shared experiences that match
any situation you might be going through. Like Womannotes, they are
filled with people who love and care and are willing to help you.

I used to be a single parent . . . you can send me mail too.

Where are you located geographically? I might be able to pull out
some contacts for you. Is it specifically being housebound?
Getting settled in the new neighborhood? Finding schools and
friends and such for the kids? For yourself?

For social life, some people like Parents Without Partners. It
wasn't my kettle of fish, but it's probably worth checking out to
    see if it suits you.

There are a number of us in this file who are/have been single parents.
I'm another one. It isn't easy and you can feel overwhelmed simply
because you don't have another ear to do sanity checks with. Parenting
is probably your best bet for that need.

Otherwise, feel free to ask for help here.

A co-worker of mine mentioned the term "Independant Parent".
    I like it. To coin.

"Empowered" has got to be the most overused, stupidest, most
    meaningless word of the 90's.

Yeah, you're right. Just was really sick of seeing the latest trendy
word used yet again. Soon my dog food will advertise itself as
something that will "empower" my dog against fleas!

My opinion here is that "canned" words are often used in conjunction
    with "canned" thinking...
