And I'd do part time work some evenings playing piano in a bar for

When I went to Florida (Clearwater) in February last year,
I met this guy named Jeff on the beach. He was 42 years
old but looked about 30. His job was renting out cabanas
and umbrellas and chairs. I sat with him under his cabana
for the week, and had the time of my life! I met so many
different people in one week! Jeff kept a camera with him
at all times to remember people and snap pictures of
unsuspecting young ladies, too. He set up at 9:00 am and
packed up at 5:30. He had had that job since he was 22.
When he was 20, he went to Clearwater for a week with one of
his buddies, and befriended the guy who rented out cabanas,
sat with him the whole week. Then he went back to Minnesota.
A year later, he moved to Clearwater and got the job renting
cabanas. He's been there ever since. I want his job! But,
at the same time, I want a Ph.D. in Psychology. Everybody
that sat with us that week asked how he got the job. Everyone
wanted it. I'm dying to go back...
-Jennifer!
P.S. The Psychology degree will be a reality someday, but having
Jeff's job is a BIG wish.

I would run a store (much too cold a word for it - a "sharing

crocheting. A place where people could buy good quality yarns at
reasonable prices and meet in a congenial atmosphere for sharing of
ideas and creations.
In the summer, I would work at Star Island, taking my loom so I could
weave during the quiet times. Maybe even teach weaving there!!! Now
that's my idea of Heaven!!!!!

634.44 | fun with phenomena | WMOIS::RAINVILLE | quiet rainy weekend | Sat Mar 02 1991 11:19 | 29 |
| I love to spend time introducing children to science and technology.
It would be a great job, especially if i had a partner who taught
music. My son and daughter are 9 & 7, and often beg me to "do
experiments daddy! Please!!!" For several years we have spent time
on weekends and evenings with a chemistry set, electronics, magnets,
holograms, moebius strips, computers, microscopes, videocameras and
pieces of machine junk, minerals animals...anything at all that
grabs their attention. It is a lot of fun to had them a widget
that responds to them and just watch.
I try to mix in some theory with each play session. Crayons and
copies of the periodic table for chemistry notes, diagrams and
pictures from science magazines, encyclopedia searchs when they
ask questions. I ask them to describe the things they handle and
observe, and how they relate. They are already developing quite
an ability to abstract general principles from observation. Some
times they will surprise me hours or days later with insights
into things i have not shown them yet! Other children mob our
house and ask for the sessions, but it is very hard to work with
more than 2 or 3 effectivly, but it is always fun. My next project
is to take piano lessons so we can make music together. When they
want to make noise, I'll pluck a guitar note and tell them to find
it on a keyboard or with voice. They often get into one of the
toolboxes full of things and play for hours with lenses, prisms
crystals and mirrors by themselves, learning how they can manipulate
light and mix its' colors...and it is fun to hear an adult visitor
ask a question about something lying around, and get a demonstration
and explanation from a little mind a fraction of their age....mwr

634.47 | Science-by-Mail | TLE::DBANG::carroll | get used to it! | Mon Mar 04 1991 12:50 | 20 |
| re:.44 - I'm quite impressed. I have always felt that an education in
science should be a *hands* *on* experience. Many kids today feel that science
is a dry and dusty topic, because all they are ever taught in schools is
to memorize laws and results.
To this end, I am a volunteer in the Science by Mail program. This is a
program which matches up kids between 4th and 7th grade who are interested
in science with real live "Scientists" (I'm actually an engineer but my
degree says science, so I qualify.) The volunteer scientists write to their
student pen-pals. Both students and volunteers are sent packets - these
packets contain various experiments, and fun context for those experiments.
For instance, the last one was an adventure, where you had to go through
a cave, like computer adventure games, solving puzzles, and it involved
experiments such as using lemon juice as invisible ink and making Oobleck.
They kids send me the write ups of their experiements and I provide
encouragement and critique.
It's fun. If anyone is interested in joining, contact me.
