615.0. "Let's Have A Party" by SONATA::ERVIN (Roots & Wings...) Fri Jan 04 1991 15:27

Dale and I will be performing a concert at the UU Church in Stow
on Tuesday, January 29, to benefit Renewal House, a battered women's
shelter in Roxbury. This concert is open to all, and the organizers
are asking for donations of $10.00 (more if you can, less if you can't).
Digital will match all contributions of $15.00 or more from Digital
    employees.

What: Folk and Women's music by Justine Sullivan and Dale Hall
When: Tuesday, January 29, 7:30 pm
Where: Downstairs at the UU Church in Stow, located at the intersection of
Rtes 62 and 117 (next to the library)

    **********************************************************************

Perhaps we can take this concert event and turn it into a little party?
I live in Stow about 2.5 miles from the church where Justine and Dale
    will be performing.

Anyone who is interested in having quick dinner at my house before the
concert, sign up here. Directions will be sent to you.

As a part of the effort to encourage people to come out and support
this fund raising cause, I will make a vegetarian soup/stew of some
sort, garden salad and breads. I suppose this 'incentive' plan means
that you must take my word that I am a fabulous cook! ;-)

Hope to see lots of womannoters on the 29th.

    Cheers,

    Laura

and would love to have a "group" to sit with.

Great, that would be fine to bring bread and desserts. So now we have
    1 yes and 3 maybes.

Also, men are welcome at this dinner. I didn't say that in the base
note because I didn't think I needed to...but where no men have signed
up I was wondering if you were making an assumption that this dinner
was for women only or something.

    Cheers,

thanks to those who have offered to bring goodies for the meal.

Well, so far there has been a small response to the dinner party before
Dale and Justine's benefit concert. Guess there is some reservations
about my ability as a cook? ;-) Maybe I should tell you about the
delicious lunch I'm eating as I write this note...steamed veggies with
lentils in spicey tomato sauce topped with a cheddar cheese and
    monterey jack jalapeno sauce...yum, yum.

Anyway, I have decided to make a veggie soup and a seafood soup for the
pre-concert dinner. I'm still debating on the veggie soup, but I'm
leaning toward a mushroom/barley (although I'm still toying with the
idea of black bean soup, which is not for the faint of heart or for
those who don't like spicey food). Folks who are signed up for dinner can
send me mail to lobby for their preference :-)

And I will make New England Clam Chowda. In my not so humble opinion,
I make the best chowda on earth. Pretty arrogant, yes? Well, sign up
for the dinner party and judge for yourself.

And remember, the concert is a benefit for Renewal House, a battered
women's shelter in Roxbury, MA. Donations of $15 or more will be
    matched by DEC.

    Laura,

Is it ok if folks who want to come but don't want to sign up or be
listed here send you Mail? Sometimes I don't sign up for things 'cause
I don't want to see my name on a "list."

I think we'll have a pretty good turnout, and I'm really getting
excited about this -- sorry I'll be too nervous to eat some of Laura's
fine cooking -- someone else will have to perform next time she invites
    us all to dinner :-)

Sure, it's fine if people want to come but don't want their name on a
list. If so, they should send me mail and let me know that they don't
want to be posted on the list. It would be helpful, at least for
cooking purposes, to have a head count...otherwise I will just cook for
300 and figure that the bases are covered! ;-)

Count me in for the pre-concert party. I'm not much of a cook (hey,
I almost burned my kitchen down once with my first attempt at cooking
beef stew) so I'll bring either dessert of potato salad.

Great party and a great show by Justine and Dale. There were many
DECies in attendance. Very energizing evening! Thanks to Laura for
the use of her house. The food was great but we may all be a little
heavier especially the dog! ;-)

I actually ATE the most and LOST two pounds!!!! Guess who
spent the night in the loo? Just got into work as I had to
sleep this AM to recover from the all-nighter that was pulled
    on me.

The food was great along with the voice and sounds from Justine
and Dale. And I got to help Renewal House!

Thanks again Laura for the use of your house and for the lovely
soup and salad. (all the different breads and the desert were
    terrific too!)

I especially enjoyed revisiting a neighborhood and a church
that I had lived in and known about 14 years ago.

    The concert was really super!

Thanks to all of you who came out to hear us and support Renewal House.
I especially enjoyed the sing-alongs. I can hardly wait for the
Womannotes "Talent Show" that we'll have during our big splash
    weekend celebration in June!

It really meant a lot to see so many of you there.

    Thanks!

615.21wish I could singHPSRAD::LAMWed Jan 30 1991 17:5811
I wish I knew the songs so I can sing along with the audience. But I do
know the last song "Circle game". I'm not familiar with folk songs
unless they were by Harry Chapin. Maybe I can put in a request for your
    next concert, Justine?

Laura's yellow split pea soup was outstanding, have to ask her for a
    recipe.

Bonnie, it was so nice to see you again.

615.22It was great having you all over for dinner!SONATA::ERVINRoots & Wings...Thu Jan 31 1991 15:4327
    >>Laura's yellow split pea soup was outstanding, have to ask her for a
    >>recipe.

Thanks for the compliment, Caroline. Here's the recipe:

    Laura's Yellow Split Pea Soup

    Make soup stock:

If you are going to cook a ham, simmer it first in 1/2 water and 1/2
apple juice. Save the apple juice/water stock to use for soup stock.
Or, get a ham bone and cook it down in water and apple juice. I guess
I used about 6 cups of apple juice and 6 cups of water to 1 and 1/2
    bags of dry peas.

Once you have the stock ready, add the split peas. Cook on low heat for
several hours...basically until the peas get soft and dissolve.

p.s. Laura does not consider soup made with meat stock a vegetarian
soup. Just wanted to qualify that two soups were severed...one veggie,
one non-veggie, since I said in my original party note that I would
    make a veggie soup!
