I guess I don't know much about investing. Last night I was talking to someone, and saying this is a good time to buy Digital stock, and he said, yeh, but how about Staples? And I said maybe I'd buy 10 or so shares of Staples, and he said it was impossible to buy a small amount of stock without paying, at minimum, $35 per transaction, so buying a small amount was not worth it. Is this true? Is it really $35 at minimum (and apparently more at times) to buy/sell small amounts of stock? Briana

this is basically correct. there is usually a minimum commission charge, anywhere from $35-100. similarly, there is usually a commission 'break' for dealing in larger units, usually 100 shares, though sometimes more. as for it not being worth it, it depends on how much you think the stock will go up. i recently purchased a few shares of digital stock on my own (i.e. not espp) because i believe the price will go up enough to offset the commission hit.

Quick answer - any stock transaction of less than 100 shares is called an "odd lot" and is charged a premium. I have no idea how much this premium is, but it is often significant. I don't know if odd amounts over a multiple of 100 shares are charged the odd lot premium or not. -- Charles

Call Charles Schwab (800-435-4000) and ask for their fees schedule. They explain, in a lot of detail, all the fees and the rationale. Al |
