    o A neck massage
    o Playing pinball really well.
o Playing pinball really well in a crowded establishment where many
people around you can hear the loud noise that the machine makes
every time it awards you a free game.
o Playing pinball really well such that you go into a trance as you
"become one with the machine", in a Zen sort of way.
o Eating chicken fajitas after a good hard workout at the health club.

    1. A great back/neck rub

    2. A decadent meal (dinner at Matam Fez is a two hour food orgy)

    3. Three hours of laughter with good freinds

    4. Sitting absolutely still for hours in the woods in the fall, and or
walking through them also. Hi Dana ;-)

One story about child-raising that leaps to mind...

Latency-period child to parent, after a premature explanation of
intercourse in too much boring detail:

"Do you get to eat **chocolate** while you're doing it?"

Yeah, I *did* say "boring detail." No accident. :-)

And come ON, Bonnie's GrandKid!! We're all pulling for ya!!

(and eating chocolate while we're waiting, no doubt... great
    consolation, that...)

A good hard back scratch given by someone with nice sharp fingernails,
especially if a spot is itching that you can't reach.

Falling into a pool or lake when hot and sweaty.

That first long pull on a cold beer.

Almost as good as sex? Hmmm...

Standing on 5.9 wondering how long you can stay, looking up at the 5.10c saying
"No way!" Stepping-*there*-putting-your-hand-*there*-stepping-up-to-just-
*there*-getting-both-hands-up-*there*-and-YEAH! When it all just flows...

Standing on the cornice, looking down at a 45 chute with a dog leg, feeling the
old familar tension in your gut, saying to yourself "No way!" and just pushing
off - committed - rushing down, turn, turn, turn, turn, TURN, and out!

An evening at home with the right, ahem, atmosphere and the right music,
ranging from the Grateful Dead to Bob Wills, AC/DC to Asleep at the Wheel,
and/or Commander Cody to Albert King.

A night out with friends hearing some good jamming, dancing music.

A new supply of Grateful Dead show tapes.

A phone call from a special friend.

A glass of a real good Cabernet.

Knowing I have a quiet evening to myself and a real good book which I don't
have a chance of finishing that night.

    Better than good sex:

    * Sharing a drink and stories with an old friend that I haven't seen
      in awhile.

    * Sharing Morrison poetry with someone who appreciates it for what
      it's worth.

    * Listening to the sound of my 20 month old son breath when he naps
      with me.

    * Nude sunbathing in a remote section of the wilderness with a
special person and a 6-pack of beer.

    * Singing out loud in my car with someone who sings as poorly as
      me but doesn't care either.

    * Being alone with my horse on a trail ride far back in the mountains
where I board him, experiencing and not disturbing the wildlife
that surrounds us. Hearing no cars or airplanes, but only the
soft sounds of nature that we forget about in our busy everyday

Back in 1977, I got to go to the Boston reviewers' premiere of a
science fiction movie. (A fellow Nesfa member, Bill Carton, had
been phoning the filmmaker with encouraging noises for nearly a
year, and the film studio wanted a large, understanding audience,
    so Nesfa got 100 passes.)

The film started, the introductory material scrolled by, we saw
the surface of a planet beneath us, a space ship dashed by overhead,
then the giant ship chasing it passed us -- for football field after
football field. That's when we all knew that "Star Wars" was
going to be a *really* good science fiction film.

I understand what you're getting at john but fail to see why the two can't be
combined. What's wrong with total enjoyment of the sensual pleasures? We are
physical beings and physical enjoyment is one of our gifts. I notice that many
of the "almost as good as" notes describe other physical activities.

I, for one, don't want a purely metaphysical love. I always feel so ignoble that
these higher ideals are not enough for me. Sure, I want "true" love, but I want
hot sex too. liesl (who is just another of the animals on this planet)

Liesl, I didn't mean to imply that anything was wrong with enjoying
sensual pleasure. However, for myself, I have been questioning the
amount of energy I spend on thinking about the above, ie, going back
over old experiencese, lusting after people - most of which will never
be realized, and spending time and energy trying to have experiences,
which for me when done for the purely physical part, have not been
emotionaly satisfying and seems wrought with other problems.

I certainly think it is worth questioning how much we are conditioning
about the importance of sex in our culture. We only have so much
energy so we have to decide what to spend it on...

I find the whole concept of rating various experiences kind of
strange. What does that really mean? Maxmimum pleasure nerve ending
simulation, emotional satisfaction, "spiritual satisfaction", getting
the maximum amount of one's own personal needs and wants met? Does
that mean that what we devote our energy to what has met our needs in
the past? If life just about satisfying all our various and sundary
desires? I don't know but I'd like to find out for myself.

Though we are animals as you say, we also have the ability to make
choices on what to do while we are here. Some people have actually
chosen to rechannel their sexual energy into other areas and have
actually lived to tell about it. While I'm not one of them, I find
the concept interesting...

Anyways, just some random thoughts...

peace,
john

Sigh, given that I've been celibate for quite some time now I'm *well* aware of
sexual energy being channeled into other areas. I'm afraid I'm a hedonist in
mind only at this time. Perhaps that's slanting my perspective. :*)

I have a friend who simply spends so much time on competitive cycling,
rock and ice climbing, caving, and working that they don't really feel
they need sex all that often - they find they can attain that "high"
naturally elsewhere and they find that relationships seem to complicate
their lives more than they contribute.....

Other alternatives might include some kind of art or creative endeavor

    (climbing, horse-riding, windsurfing, skiing, etc).

An article in the January issue of Discover magazine begins:

"Rainbows, the northern lights, good sex -- all nothing" said a
Virginia Beach resisdent after the 1970 [total solar] eclipse there.
    "Nothing compares with totality."

Witnessing a total solar eclipse is something I dreamed of as a child.
It's a dream that has not yet come true. I was 17 and about to
graduate high school in 1970. I lived just outside Washington, DC.
just a 5 or 6 hour drive to the path of totality. My mother refused to
let me ride down with the guys in the Science Club. I had to settle
for 98%. Even after 21 years it's something I just can't forgive her
for. I suppose she was afraid I'd have sex with the Science Club. Get
serious! These guys were such nerds, they wouldn't have known what to do
with me. And besides who could think about sex with an eclipse going
    on?

Hmmmmm... sex during a total solar eclipse. WOW! The thought of it
boggles the mind (and other parts of the body too)

Yep, snow, in July. It was only a squall; the upper air was

lower regions got no snow at all, we were lucky to be on a hilltop.

The weather in the Fingerlakes is weird. The lakes (which run roughly

Yes, I agree that sex done properly is magikal. In fact it is used as a

different. This appears to have been a gift from the Goddess and as
such was spontaneous to the humans involved.

trickey, I haven't seen your name here before, so it's likely you did not see
my complaints about my kids' killer nasty scratching vicious bunnies. Ok, their
fur is soft and fluffy, but the rest of them is not so nice.

They do generate lots of good garden fertilizer.

One of our two seems to be allergic to hay. Yes, to its primary source of
dietary roughage. It got pretty sick, with cold-like symptoms, for a while; the
only good effect of that is that it was too sick to resist being handled, and
(finally!!!) got used to it somewhat. You can pet the bunny without it trying
to assert dominance over your hand with its teeth.

Now the northern lights, *they* are almost as enjoyable as sex.
