It's hard to describe her humor because so much of it is in the
delivery - her tone of voice and facial expressions.
She is wonderful!!

She is one of my favorites!
At times I can really relate to her, and she always makes me laugh.
I think she is one of the funniest people in comedy today...

| A large group of Digital folks attending a meeting in San Francisco
last year got tickets to a Comedy Club and it was the first time
I caught her act.
She did her homework on us and worked us into her act. She had
some very amusing comments to make about us and the VAX product
line. Of course, we all attended in business dress and suits so
we were the suits for the night.
I really enjoy her cat routines. She has them down cold.

| I grew up with Paula in Sudbury. She was always, how do I say it,
"different".
She came to the 13-year class reunion over Thanksgiving, and she is
still exactly the same. Her years in L.A. haven't changed her much.
While everyone was in their evening attire, Paula showed up in her
usual dungarees and red cloddy boots.
When talking to her one-on-one, she is very quiet, but once a group
of 3 or more are in the picture, she lapses into her comedy routines.
It was something to watch, because you could see her catch herself,
and try to revert back to normal conversation.
Good to see that she is still down to earth!

RE: .8
When I watched Paula the other night, I was quite fascinated
to notice that most of her material doesn't consist of lines
that would be funny per se - it's difficult to post her "jokes"
here (more so than other comics.)
It's her delivery - she is truly humorous.
My son likes her, too.
I hope she does well. (A cable special is a good sign.) ;^)

| re -1:
Silly question having absolutely no bearing on this topic -
How does pointing out that we have cable to thank for Andrew Dice Clay's
popularity and well known-ness have to do with being confrontational??
it seems to me that:
(.10) Suzanne stated that she wanted to see paula do well, hoping that a cable
special was a sign of this.
(.11) mike z, in not so many words, pointed out what a cable show did for
another comic (whose material I'll refrain from commenting on) on his
rise to success.
(.12) And then you jumped all over him for it.
why?
grins,
clark.

| I offer the following not as an explanation of why but merely as a way
to supply some context
There have been a couple of knock em down drag em out fights about
Andrew Dice Clay, in mennotes, and -I think here-
Mike and Suzanne were on opposite sides of that 'discussion'

Thanks, folks, but let's drop it.
Paula Poundstone's act is completely unrelated to humor or
controversy between the sexes.

I was actually two years behind her in High School. My husband was in
her class though, as well as my sister. (My maiden name is Hawes)
She used to come over to our house specifically to play with our
7 cats. She told me the other night that she now has 8 herself.

> I hope she has a lot of success!
She is having a cultural success of an unusual sort. For a
loooong time, female comics were having trouble discovering
their "sound." See, most baby comics start out sounding like
the greats! Lenny Bruce, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, and
the holler and scream set a la Belushi. Comics of the female
persuasion would take parts of this vocal sound -- pitch,
cadence, enunciation, inflection, stress -- but for most, it
didn't quite work ... feel natural ... blend into the person.
So most would end up going back to their default real life
voice and starting out again from there. A long bypass.
Over the last few years, however, Paula Poundstone has become
one of the default voice of American comics, especially the
women New comics adopt her tone, her cadence, her inflections,
and go from there to their own voice. It is all accidental, of
course; you never say "I will be Bill Cosby." The ear just
picks up and echos the good sounds.
It's fun to be a comedy fan and hear people who are partly
themselves and party about twenty other comics, with the
personas flashing in and out every few minutes. Paula's
voice is now one of the personas that flashes on and off.
Long after we are all dead and buried, the voice of Paula
Poundstone will still be living in other people. Meigs

I have seen her HBO special and I didn't notice that it had anything to do with
Andrew Dice Clay and it isn't listed in the cable guide that way. I did miss
the first couple of minutes though.

there? Every year I keep meaning to go....
