| I admire Molly Yard, President of NOW (National Organization of Women),
for her strength and never-ending battle for the rights of women,
*ALL* women! She's an incredible woman and I had to honor of hearing
her speak last year in DC!

| I admire Meryl Streep for her wonderful acting ability, her
beauty and the fact that she wore a leather jacket in "Postcards
from the Edge" with a pink triangle on it! Good for you Meryl :-)

shoot me if I did.

506.6 | three who inspire me | CVG::THOMPSON | Rationally Irrational | Sat Nov 03 1990 18:54 | 17 |
| My wife for reasons detailed elsewhere in this conference
My mother in law for being a single parent who raised an
exceptional daughter while at the same time making her way
forward in a man's world (stodgy Wall Street banks of 25-30
years ago almost being worse than much we can imagine today). For
the fighting spirit she's shown in dealing with a major stroke
that forced her disability retirement years before she was
ready emotionally or financially to to stop work. To say nothing
of the obstacles she has physically.
Grace Murray Hopper for reasons that should be obvious to all
in our industry. She's done more to make standards "happen" in
computers then anyone alive or dead. She's inspired me for over
15 years (the first time I heard her speak.)

I meant to put in the base note that "women you admire" can be living
or dead.

Ayn Rand. For having survived Soviet Russia and the
revolution; for telling us what it was like to
live there; and for telling us how to avoid the
philosophical traps that the Russian people fell
victim to.....

Patty Wagstaff and Ellen Dean
Non-aviators may not know of these two women, but they
are currently members of the US Aerobatic Team. The
team represented the US in international flight
competition in Switzerland this past summer.
Wagstaff is VERY directed, and trains and practices
constantly.
I used to watch Dean practice down in Florida. She
would take her Pitts biplane ( a difficult plane for
ANYONE to master ) through a small part of a difficult,
inverted maneuver time and time again. For 20 minutes
she would roll the plane upside down, then push the
plane over into an arc, then arc back over upside down,
in a big 'S' curve. She would feel 4.5 Gs positive and
negative.
The old hands at the airport, some of them former
WWII fighter pilots, would wince and shake their heads.
Repeatedly doing these maneuvers was a guarantee of
of a headache for most...yet she is a perfectionist...

| My dear, dear friend Vicky, for having struggled against impossible
odds at saving her marriage and her 18 year old son who 1 year ago
was dying of cancer.
Both are surviving and doing very well, only because of her positive
attitude and her incredible "yes I can" ability.

My aunt, who adopted me at the age of twelve and basically saved my
life. She did this while "recovering" from a masectomy and going to law
school. She was also a wife and a mother, and I was definitely not an
easy kid to raise.
She died five years ago, on Easter, at the age of 34. I always admired
her raw strength and honesty. I miss her much...
