| contact churches, synagogues, the Salvation Army, or a shelter for
homeless people, and ask what they need. Mods: can folks post
addresses here, of shelters for ex?
Last year, a woman at our daycare ctr asked me if I had a winter jacket
that my son had outgrown. Her church had 'adopted' a boy about Adam's
size, which is why she thought to ask me.

472.2 | The Giving Tree | COMET::BOWERMAN | | Wed Oct 24 1990 11:51 | 14 |
| In Colrado Springs the Girl Scouts Organization has expanded a service
progect that a troop started several years ago. The troops make
ornaments and they are hung on a tree at several locations in the city
people can take an ornament and the name and request of a senior
citizen is on the back of the ornament. THe idem is requested and
brought back to the location of the tree (wrapped or not) and the
gifts are taken to the Counsil office and wrapped (if not already)
and delivered to Silver Key who will distribute them at a party
that the Seniors are invited to. Troops can also buy a present to
give or spend time wrapping the presents at the counsil office.
This way a troop can opt to participate in a service project that
is already established instead of thinking of one of thier own.

| Great idea for wn!
I do volunteer work at a shelter for women, year round. Last year my church
decided they wanted to "do something for the shelter." Actually the women
decided they wanted to reach out in loving support to other women.
They decided on providing Thanksgiving dinner. This consisted of two 24lb
turkeys and four cartons of trimmings. I contact my volunteer coordinator
and got an estimate of how many women and children they expected to have
for Thankgiving dinner and went from there. I delivered the groceries
one week before the holiday.
If you have no idea if there is a battered women's sheleter near you, just
look in the phone book. They are usually listed under, Abuse hot line, Family
Volence Hot Line, or any local police can probably give you the number.
Christmas is also another holiday when gifts would be appreciated. And just
basic necessities are needed. Toiletries, towels, gloves, non violent toys.
Again, a great idea. I wish you much success.

| As of Friday, October 19, Digital has a VOLUNTEER notes file.
It is on CHIPS::VOLUNTEER and is a terrific resource. You
may want to refer to that file for more ideas and to add your
own input!
Also, somewhat off the subject of this note 472, there is a notes file
dealing with volunteer opportunities in the education field. That
notes file was also started on October 19. That notes file is
HELIX::KIDS_AND_COMPUTERS.

472.5 | I vant to drrink your blood | GWYNED::YUKONSEC | couldn't think of anything pithy today | Wed Oct 24 1990 15:26 | 10 |
| This is a volunteer opportunity that is needed all year round, but especially
at holidays. The American Red Cross is *always* in desperate need of blood
over the Christmas holidays. There are many car accidents over these
holidays, and unfortunately less people donate at this time. I've donated
2 gallons of blood, and now donate platelets, and I can tell you that it
gives me a good feeling that the short amount of time that I spend donating
may be giving someone else a tremendous amount of time that they may not have
had.

| .4 - thanks for the pointer to the Volunteer notesfile. It is
exactly what I'm looking for. There are *numerous* volunteer
opportunities whether a person has one hour available every other
week or 40+ hours a week.

This is something someone in my organization started.
(before I joined the group so I just found out about
it this year). At Christmas time, the group "adopts"
a needy family. Donations are collected, volunteers in the
group go out shopping for gifts and other wrap. Then
the gifts are given to this family at Christmas. I'm not
sure of all the particulars but I thought it was a wonderful
idea!

| The Threads II Friendship Quilt is ready to raffle. This is a joint
project of Digital noters from around the world who use their common
interest in and talent for creating beautiful needlework to create a
one-of-a-kind quilt to raffle for a worthy cause.
This year the raffle proceeds will go to the Hospice at Mission Hill
in Boston, a safe, medically comprehensive residence for men and women
in the end stages of AIDS.
Volunteers are needed to sell raffle tickets between now and mid-December
for the drawing on Dec. 21. Anyone interested in helping, please contact
me.
Thanks.
