parent since my daughter was 10 months old (she's 6 now) and I get so

Re .76
It emerged, in a discussion in HU_REL I think, that when people
described their "perfect person" they often seemed to describe
a perception that they would aspire to themselves.
That is, they described to an extent how *they* would like to be seen.
Maybe that has something to do with it?

| Since I seemed to start this with my .66 I think I want to interject
something here.....I agree with you, Rich, that many times people do
set too high standards for themselves, but also feel strongly that all
too often people (in general, male or female) don't give themselves an
opportunity to take enough time, casual time, to get to know someone
for who and what they are before deciding it's a "No Go".....An initial
encounter may not offer everything that one would hope to find, but in
my late husband, I initially thought "I'll never date a bald man..."
but I learned to know him, and love all the other things that were the
best of him. We married and were totally happy until the day he died.
If I had done, as is so often done, and said"No thanks" after our
initial encounter I would have missed out on one of the dearest and
best people I have ever known. So, I think what I'm trying to say is,
sometimes we don't overset our requirements, but we never get that
chance to know someone or for him/her to get to know us.....That, I
think is what bothers me more about now in my life than anything...

Yes, you understand what I am talking about. By discarding your
"requirement" for a full head of hair you found someone exceptional
that you would have otherwise overlooked.

Peace in the middle East.
My teenaged son is signed up for the "potential" draft. There's
talk of actually starting it up if the crisis in Iraq ends up in
a war. It's something I've been dreading could happen since my
baby was born toward the end of the Vietnam War.
Please - let's work it out over there.
Peace for the holidays (and beyond.)

| Ohmygod...I never thought of that! My brother is (um, muble, er...)
almost 17...the thought had never crossed my mind that he would
be "eligible" soon.
Not that I wanted a war before, but now I'm doubly against it.
Add that to my Christmas list.

Ditto to the past few. I was thinking about it yesterday
and 98% of the men I'm close to are of eligible age....
sigh.....my brother being the first at 19...

Believe me I don't know anybody in the military (including myself) who
actually wants to "go black" in the gulf.
But if President Saddam believes, or comes to believe, that public
sentiment will stop the Western nations using force to get him out of
Kuwait then he'll just stay there for evr with a smug little smile on
his face working out who to roll over next (after all he has imperial
"historical claims" dating back to the Assyrian empire on most of the
Middle East).
Hitler played these sort of bluffs and until he attacked Poland nobody
was prepared to call him: Saddam may be expected to do likewise until
somebody objects forcefully to his knocking over the next domino. Worse
if the US, UK and France walk away from this one he will gain great
face, and become de facto what he has always wanted to be: effective
leader of the Arab-Islamic world.
He may not be a very nice guy, but he has proved himself a damn fine
poker player: the time is approaching for us all to see the cards ...
Note that his terms for "talking" are that "the Israeli-Palestine issue
be top of the agenda" - and if he manages to get talks on that basis
then he can withdraw from Kuwait still knowing that he has won and
Anmerica is no longer a factor in Middle East politics.
I shan't continue in this string - I note on this topic in other more
appropriate fora - but I will say this one last time that this isn't
about oil - nor about Texaco - nor about western economies. It is about
a direct attempt to take overall political control of the Middle East,
and then - and only then - to bring the Infidels of the West down. If
we don't face him down now then in five years he may control Saudi
Arabia and the rest of Gulf and after this there won't be a thing we in
the West can do to stop him short of all out nuclear war (it is however
a very good scenario for using neutron bpmbs so if we back away now we
should restart development...)
