397.0. "_The Second Sex_ by Simone de Beauvoir" by XCUSME::QUAYLE (i.e. Ann) Sat Sep 22 1990 11:37
They say the memory is the second to go. Drat.
I recently sort-of-read _The Second Sex_ by Simone de Beauvoir. That
is, I read some parts with great attention, making copious notes, but
must confess that I skimmed parts too. Towards the end, there was an
incident mentioned concerning very young prostitutes (if I could trust my
memory I'd say they were around 12 or 13). One child (young woman?)
was testifying concerning her "crime" but the bailiff of the court, or
the interrogating officer, or whoever it was, stopped her when she would
have mentioned the name of her client, saying something to the effect of,
"You shall not slander the name of a respected man." (The irony!)
I have since looked for this passage so I can quote from it in a paper I'm
writing, but no luck. :( Help is therefore requested from any and all
readers of this work, especially those with better memories and/or better
notes!
Many thanks,
aq
