352.0. "The Goodbye note" by RCA::PURMAL (A fond adieu and a beef fondue) Tue Sep 04 1990 21:22

I hate being the one to start this note. This is a note for people
    to say goodbye.

Friday, 9/7 will be my last day here at DEC. I'd like to stay
here, but I also want to stay in this area, and DEC didn't have any
    jobs for me out here.

I want to thank all of you who've contributed to all the different
volumes of WOMANNOTES. I've had fun here, I've learned here, I've felt
like part of the =wn= community here. There are many special people
who I've gotten to "know" through their notes here. I've been lucky
enough to even meet a few of you. I'll miss not having you in my daily
life anymore, but I'm carrying a lot of you with me.

Its been great here. I wish you all the best,

Tony, you'll be missed. I know it's your choice, given the
alternatives, and so I'm glad that you'll be doing what's best for you,
    but...you'll be missed.

I posted a message from Tony a week ago in the "Books" topic, including
his new email address. He now recommends a different one, so if you
wrote him last week and got no answer, its probably because it didn't
get to him. He is now reachable through this address, and would love
    to hear from folks.

i hate to usurp tony's goodbye note, but i think that is better than
    starting a new basenote.

today i am visiting a few files before deleting my notebook.

i've deleted it before, when notes became an outlet for my depression
over my job and threatened to destroy my performance. when i felt
healthy and productive again, i came back - i may do so again.

but when i consider how little work i've done in the past few weeks, i
think that i'd much rather be in my lab taking apart ICs.

i choose the term "feminazi" to describe myself much in the way many
lesbians choose the term "dyke"; i simply want to remind those
unfamiliar and uncomfortable with feminists that we come in all sorts
    of flavors.

i hope that someone will notify me of upcoming parties which i may
    attend.

    any upcoming exciting events!

There are many times that I feel the need to leave a space
too.....especially when I find it no longer is beneficial to me (ie, if
it gives me more bad vibes than good ones). It goes in cycles and I,
too, feel another one coming on.

Take care, Lee. May everything work out FANTASTIC for you!

Subj:	Bonnie, will you please post this in =wm= for me at 11:30am New England

I have asked Bonnie to post this at 11:30 New England time. I would have
posted it, but I needed the element of surprise this am, and I'm not sure
that I will have an account at noon today :-)

Hi,

This is a very weird message to be writing. I have been with Digital for
almost seven years, and I thought I would always be with Digital. I just
couldn't see life after Digital. However, Digital isn't the company I
so much wanted to get a job with in 1983, and struggled to achieve in
1984, when I finally secured a spot with Digital.

It is time in everyone's life to move on at one point or the other. I have
decided to leave Digital. I will be giving them notice while this is being
posted. With the state of the company, I can't be sure how that will be
handled. If you'd like to know what plans I have, Bonnie does know, and its
okay for her to pass it on.

It will be REALLY weird not having VAXNOTES around anymore, or USENET,
but if that is the only reason a person is staying with a company, then
that is a very poor excuse.

Mail from friends like you will be missed, however, I do have some of your
home addresses,. Will you take a few minutes after you read this, and send
me yours, so that I know I have the latest up to date address. We can
still keep in touch, but not as easy as EMAIL. I have enjoyed the jokes,
and the passing of information to and from.

My address is:

	Gale Kleinberger
	1503 Grand Junction
	Katy, Texas 77450

Please take care and God Bless!

This isn't exactly a goodbye, but since things have been pretty
volatile in here lately, I thought I'd tell everybody that I'm not
going to be in here a lot over the next few months. My project's
getting close to shipping, I'm going to be in a steep learning
curve on my new job (look out C, here I come), and I'm in the
middle of revising a novel and starting to think about starting a
new one. So I'm just not going to have time for much noting.

I'll drop in from time to time. I hope my friends will keep me
posted on anything that needs my input [ :) ] and anyone who needs
a hug will send me mail or drop by in person at my office in
    ZK1-1.

    Goooood Byeeeeee!!!

Friday April 12th will be my last day with DEC after 2-1/2 years.
Not a terribly long time, but lots of wonderful experiences (including
this notesfile and running the computer room in piscataway, n.j.) and
    lots of great people.

I've decided that the fabulous world of Software Sales Support was not
for me. I missed the toys and the hands-on toooooo much! So, I'm
going to Parke Davis (pharmacutical branch of Warner Lambert) as an
Associate Systems Programmer/Analyst, End User Support Group for the
sales and marketing people (300 All-in-1 users) at corporate
    headquarters in Morris Plains, N.J.

I'm going to miss you all and would love to hear from you (I know,
EVERYONE SAYS THAT!!!) so here's my home info (of course the new job is
54 miles from my home and I hope to be moving closer in June/July
timeframe, but for now, this is it):

I am posting this information on behalf of Barb.

As of April 30th, she was involuntarily severed, or whatever.

She said it was okay to tell you, and also give you all her address:

    Barbara Haslam
1191 East Forget Me Not Avenue (how sadly apt :( )
    Sandy, UT 84094

This is a different kind of good-bye.

Like many people who first came to DEC hungry for interaction with
other women, Womannotes originally satisfied a hunger I had for many
things. Female companionship, exploration of women's issues, etc.

I've hung in with three volumes, but its time for me to go. Feminism
isn't as PC as it used to be, now that the competition for the pie is
more bitter, and there aren't enough jobs to go around. Its very true
that men are going to be fighting back more frequently. Out there AND
in here. And the gains that might be made in here are nothing if I lose
my job in the real world... I'm beginning to think the feminism has a
lot more to do with my actions than my words.

To all of you who have nominated me to the Hall of Fame in every
volume, I can't tell you what wonders it has done for my ego. Ray Davis
described my noting persona as logical and sensible. And I felt good
about that. Being the notes addict that I am, its unlikely that I'll be
able to keep from reading, at least in the beginning.

I want to say a special good-bye to all of the moderators, past and
present, who have let me form friendships with them. I hope those
friendships will continue. And to all of you whom I have had the
pleasure of meeting, please know that I hope to keep you as friends as
well. Maybe I'll show up at parties more as I note less.

Last of all, there has been a special group of people who have sent me
a lot of hugs lately. Y'all know who you are, and words can't express
how much your warm thoughts have meant to me.

Even I must return full force for this one.

Three years ago, a NYC summer hire sat alone in the Hudson halls, just
waiting for the ride back to Worcester.
A very personable full time woman walked up to her, said hello, asked what
the hire what she was reading, and the conversation went on.
The smooth skinned, self assured woman, African-American, with long
reddish hair offered many things. Among them, as part of her name/
    identification, she said :

"I am Lauren Foster, you may have seen me in Blacknotes."

I had never seen it. I had never used notes. I did not know where
or how they worked. But she explained it to me. I learned much
about it, and was very grateful.

One year ago, the summer hire returned, as a full hire. She found,
when she eventually returned to reading notes... that the supportive/
strong voice of ::FOSTER was still within the file =bn= , but was being
out shouted, bulk noted, and/or pounded by several crude/cruel voices.
To watch this happen was painful, and anger inducing. The one time
summer hire (me) began to note. I did not want to see her fight
alone. We had a good time, for a while.

We parted noting ways with =wn=. However, I still hung on, looking
for the words/concepts/and ideas of LKF. They were strong, clear,
and whether I agreed with them or not, they were hers... and she
is a special person, that I just loved to watch think.

As downsizing procedes, and other parts of life progress, it has
become difficult for many of us to allocate the time for noting.
It is painful to see that the few precious moments that I may get
to grasp at the end of my OT hours, will be without the benefit
    of her voice.

If it will make her stronger, however, it will be good.

    Through it all,
For reasons I can not explain,
    With Love,
    Cynthia Barber-Mingo
