345.0. "Myers - Briggs Personality Type Indicator" by TCC::HEFFEL (Sushido - The way of the tuna) Wed Aug 29 1990 16:44

In at least one other note, we've been talking about the MBPI.

In order to keep that topic from going too far down a rathole and because
MB is worth a topic in and of itself, I thought I'd start up a topic on the
Indicator.

The Myers - Briggs test categorizes your preferences along 4 continuums.
These preferences describe how you direct your energy, how you take in
information, how you make decisions and so on.

The full MB test is a 300(?) question test that is interpreted by a
an independent lab. The results are supposed to be interpreted by a certified
MB instructor/facilitator. The questions ask things like "do you prefer your
friends to have their feet on the ground or their heads in the clouds?", "which
word appeals to you more, planned or spontaneous?" and so on... "Please
Understand Me" by AARRGGHHH! (just had the name blank out of my mind, I'll post
a reference tomorrow) has an abbrieviated 70 question test that you canself
score. The few people I've known who took it, found the short test accurate.
(It found me to be the same type that the long test did.)

When you take the test, you end up with a 4 letter code that puts you
into a personality category. The first letter is E (for Extrovert) or I (for
Introvert). The second is N (for iNtuitive) or S (for Sensing). The third
is T (for Thinking) or F (for Feeling). The last letter is J (for Judging) or
P (for Perceiving). (You also get a numeric score with each preference showing
how strong the preference is. A score over 30 is a MONDO strong, no-question-
about-it-you-like-it-this-way type of score. A score under 10 may show a
conflict between your preferred style and what's needed. For instance, you
prefer an Intuitive style but that your job demands Sensing type behavior and
so you've modified to suit...)

I find the MB useful because -

1) It makes no value judgement. It's not better to be extrovert just different.
Judging people have value and drawbacks and so do Perceiving people.

2) It's so damn accurate. No one that I have talked has disagreed with their
MB type. I'm a very strong example of my type (almost a caricature :-)) so
while reading the description of my type, I kept looking over my shoulder to
see where the cameras were. :-)

3) It's constructive. It's no magic potion but I'm finding it useful in
learning how to deal with people of other (especially opposite) types.

Tomorrow , I'll enter some information about the 4(8) preferences.
(Thinking vs. Feeling and so on). (I'd do it now, but I don't have my book
with me.)

Found it! It is from the book:

To interpret the test I also included the "sorter" sheet. I think it's
pretty self explanatory, but if not let me know and I'll try to dechiper
 it.

In one of the other strings someone mentioned her 4 letter MB category.
I'd be interested to hear of others, if any of you are willing to share
    the info.

I'm an INFJ, although I was borderline E... a case of environment over
preference I think. That is, I'm an introvert but circumstances have
forced me toward extroversion and I've found that to be quite pleasant
    - until I'm tired.

re .4, I didn't have to come up with those figures. Two different
times I've been in groups at Digital where they administered the tests
to us, and the person who gave us the test came up with the figures.
It was fun, actually. I just happened to find one of my report forms
when I recently changed jobs and cleaned my office.

345.6TCC::HEFFELSushido - The way of the tunaWed Aug 29 1990 17:4416
Nope. The answer to question 1 goes to E or I. The answers to 2 and 3
go to N or S, 4 and 5 go to F or T, 6 and 7 go to S or P and 8 goes to E or I
again and so on. Using the form in .1, add up all the a's and B's in column
1. If the number of A's is higher the number of b's you're an E(xtrovert).
The greater the number of a's the greater the preference. All the other letters
each get TWO columns. So the number of a's in columns 2 and 3 determines
your N vs.S preference. Columns 4 and 5 determine F vs. T. Columns 6 and 7
determine J versus P.

Did that help or did I confuse things even more?

A suggestion: just answer the questions first. Don't try to score
as you go; it could change your result.

The purity test is flawed because there seems to be two distinct
groups: the 60%'s and the 90%'s. Guess why.

    Anyway: E=10 S=6 T=8 J=9

Well, I guess I'm extroverted (as if anyone that knows me would doubt
that, although I really prefer that the person who is closest to the
phone should answer it =) ), but as for the others I guess I'm
intuitive but the others are just about even.

One interesting point about Introverts and Extroverts: For a long time
introverts have been [loosely] defined as shy, and extroverts as
outgoing. Not so with MB, rather it was explained to me that for a
quick take on your I or E standing, ask yourself, "When I'm really
tired, dragged out, stressed out, and maybe even depressed, which
sounds better to me - time with friends or home alone?"

In my case it's home alone for renewal, and parties and other social
goodtimes when I'm up for them. However, I have friends who, when
weary, seek out social occasions to renew themselves. And at least one
offspring who practically doesn't exist unless there are people around.

The results for me were ESTJ. I took this test at the last company I
worked for. They found that over 50% of the engineers in the company
that were tested (they tried to get all of them since it wasn't a huge
company) had type _STJ (i.e. E or I didn't matter). As Ann pointed out
in .11, I discovered that I am a shy extravert which the instructor
said was usually harder for the person to deal with than being a shy
    introvert.

We also received a lot of good information on how to apply these types
to dealing with people at work either as peers or in a management
    situation.

Of course, one must be aware of which purity test one is taking, the
100 question test (Male, Female, or non-gender-specific version), the
247 question test, the 400 question test, or the 500 question test.
The higher-number question tests generally yield higher purity scores
because there are so many really off-key questions in them (and their
scores are divided so as to still provide a percentile score...)...

Probably means that your preference is one thing, but your
circumstances are forcing to act the other to a certain extent.

The facilitator that we had suggested that when you had a "tie" or a
lack of a clear cut preference, to read the description of both types and see
which fits you better. Also bear in mind that 75% of people are extrovert,
so the odds are you are an E. Also 75% of people are Sensing so odds are that
you are an S. So you are *Probably* an ESFJ. But you ought to read the
descriptions of an ISFJ, an INFJ and an ENFJ to see which fits you best.

The facilitator that we had stressed that if you diagree with your type
then the type is wrong. YOU are the final arbiter.

The book that I referred to in .0 (and from which this test came) is
_Please_Understand_Me_ by David Kiersey and Marilyn Bates. ISBN #0-9606954-0-0
Distributed by Prometheus Nemesis Book Company
		PO Box 2748
		Del Mar, Ca, 92014

I had Waldenbooks order my copy for me. Took less than 4 weeks to
get in.

I'll be entering some information today about the preferences. I'll
only be entering excerpts because 1) my time is limited (and I'm a horrible
typist) and 2) I don't want to grossly violate the copyright laws. (I'm
justifying what I do put in by saying that it will pique your curiosity enough
to go out and get the book. :-) )

Is it for poltical correctness?

Is it for chasteness?

I have no comment on either of my grades. ;-P

345.19ENXJ, no surprise thereHANCOK::D_CARROLLAssume nothingThu Aug 30 1990 10:3423
Well i took the test last night but I wasn't aware (as I was told
by someone who had more instructions) that it was okay not to answer
questions. There were questions I was totally ambivalent about, no
preference, so I just picked one. This might have skewed the results.

I am EN{T|F}J - I was split 50/50 on the thinking/feeling part. This
is sort of what I expected - even reading the two descriptions I said
to myself "Oh, I'm *both*!!" I was "J" by only a slim margin, and I
suspect if I redid the test and left out the questions I was ambivalent
on that it would be even closer. I was sort of surprised at the "N",
but I don't know whether I agree or not. The "E" was most emphatical. :-)

Interesting observation (to me anyway): most of the questions were about
how you *feel* (eg: What's your favorite this, what do you value most, etc.)
But the question abouts Extrovert/Introvert were mostly *behavioral* in
nature (eg: What do you *do* in this situation?). I think this yields
different results, at least in my case...because I don't *feel* like
an extrovert. in fact, I used to be quite introverted, but very unhappy
about it, so I made a very concious effort to become an extrovert. So

    As of '86, I was an ISTP (35, 5, 31, 7). (I've been through some
changes since then, and it would be interesting to see if my scores
    have shifted much.

The whole thing made wonderful sense to me - not only for helping to
understand some things about myself, but for seeing how others might
view things. And one very interesting thing came out of this; when my
folks were visiting me recently, my mother noticed my score sheet in
the bookcase and mentioned that she'd had it done, too. Much to my
surprise, she said she was an introvert - and here I'd always thought
of her as the "joiner," the social, outgoing one. I suppose she's one
of the "non-shy introverts"; anyhow, it startled me to find that I
didn't recognize one of my own basic tendencies in my mother.

When I took the long version of this test I was an

		E 17
		N 39
		F 19
		P 47

I just took the short test (in .1) and am an

		E 7
		N 14
		F 11
		P 13

Comparing the two, they are almost identical. On N and P
where I got very high scores on the first test, I also got
high scores on the second test. The E and F where lower, but
	still significant.

	Interesting.

re .11, this doesn't fit me. On the Myers-Briggs test I came out as
definitely introverted (31), and I have always been a quiet person but
when I'm stressed out or depressed I would much rather be with other
people than alone. Actually, when I'm stressed out I would rather be
alone, but when I'm depressed I'd rather be with other people.

I took the test for the first time in 1985 and then took it again this
summer. In the five years since I took the last test I have gotten
divorced, lived with two different men, moved four times, changed jobs
3 times, lived apart from my daughter for 4 yrs., my mother almost
died and became completely senile, and I discovered womannotes and
became a feminist. But, I still got almost the identical scores on
the test! I can't believe none of that stuff changed me.

that it was the same test, but I used to come out definitely on the I

I'm having a weird reaction to all of this. I've taken the MB tests at
leats once before, maybe twice; I'm not sure, and I don't remember ever
even knowning the numerical scores, just the letters. And I've
forgotten those. And I don't mind having forgotten. But the weird
part of my reaction, the part in me that I don't understand, is this
little voice inside that says "you don't even *want* to take the tests,
you don't want to *know*." I think its because I've had my life goals
and values under such flux, on purpose, since I left 8+ years of
military conditioning and suppression just 2.5 years ago. I think I
want to go on developing my own sense of self without any input or
feedback, because I don't think I'm settled now, and wouldn't want
and interfering feedback that would make me judge myself on a work-
in-progress. Does that make sense to anybody? When I look at the
flip side, when I feel like I'm only fooling myself, yet force myself
to look at the question anyway, is that I'm too insecure to look at
the tests. Anybody else totally ambivalent, or actively avoiding
    this exercise?

    DougO

PS- I'm *not* looking for people to judge me on my lack of willingness
to take the test. I'm looking for people to explore it with me. ok?
Thanks for being gentle with me.

I've always tested the same in letters, but scoring higher

When once tested with the remainder of my staff, I was on the
HIGH end of feeling, almost by myself, while everyone else
was at the other end. I guess I am not in balance, and need to
be more aware of the thinking piece. I act on feeling and perception

Every time I take any kind of a test - I come out as a

Seriously, I have to echo something that DougO said,
I really don't want to know what "type" I am. I have been
able to cheat on intelligence tests, MB test and some of
the other random "where do you fit in the scope of things"
tests" and I don't trust the results. I say I cheat because
I know what to answer to get the results I want the giver
	to get from me.

Since in the test for personality types that I took about
3 years ago I came out with "none of the above" as my
result, and this one I did as honestly as I could, I have
more or less ignored this type of activity.

I look at it this way; as an ISTJ, I'm simply a "normal" engineer.

What I found interesting, though was that on the first test I was
almost balanced on the I/E (10 to 9), but on the second I am strongly
introverted. I suspect that the difference is just because the first
test is binary while the second asks that your answer have a weight
value. The results of the second test really surprised me in that I
had a definite "strong" number in each category, close to
double of the counterpart category, yet I answered the overwhelming
majority of the questions with 2/3.

Please excuse the typos. Much of this was typed one-handed while holding

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extraversion vs. Introversion

The person who chooses people as a source of energy probably prefers
extraversion, while the person who prefers solitude to recover energy may
tend toward introversion....

Sources of Misunderstanding -

Extraverts, with their need for sociability, appear to be energized, or
"tuned up," by people....

...While the extravert is sociable, the introvert is territorial. That is he
desires space: private places in the mind and private environmental places.
Introverts seem to draw their energies from a diffreent source than to
extraverts. Pursuing solitary activities, working quietly alone, reading,
meditating, participating in activites which involve few or no other peopl --
these seem to charge the batteries of the introvert....

...The question always arises, "Does not an extrovert also have an introverted
side and does not an introvert also have an extroverted side?" Yes, of course.
But the preferred attitude whether it be extraversion or introversion, will have
the most potency and the other will be the "suppressed minority." The
preferred attitude will be expressed in the conscious personality, and will
reflect the aim, will and acheivement of the conscious personality....

....If a person prefers extraversion, his choice coincides with about 75
percent of the general population[Bradway,1964]. Only 25 percent reported
introversion as their preference, according to Myers[Bradway, 1964]. Indeed
Western culture seems to sanction the outgoing sociable, and gregarious
temperament. The notion of anyone wanting or needing much solitude is viewed
rather often as reflecting an unfriendly attitude.... As a consequence,
introverts are often the ugly ducklings in a society where the majority enjoy
sociability....

....Introverts have reported that they have gone through much of their lives
blieving that they *ought* to want more sociability, and because they do not,
are indeed ugly ducklings who can never be swans. As a result, the introvert
seldom provides adequately for his very legitimate desire for territoriality,
for breathing room, without experiencing a vague feeling of guilt.

Cue Words -

The Main word which differentiates an extravert from an introvert is
*sociability* as opposed to *territorialty*, but the extravert also finds
*breadth* appealing where the introvert finds the notion of *depth* more
attractive. Other notions which give a cue to this prefernce are the idea of
*external* as opposed to *internal*; the *extensive* as opposed to the
*intensive*; *interaction* as opposed to *concentration*; *multiplicity of
relationships* as opposed to *limited relationships*;*expenditure of
energy* as opposed to *conservation of energy*; *interest in external
happenings* as opposed to *interest in internal reactions*.

Ok, I tried the two sets of questions, in two different ways each
so that is a total of 4 results.

First time through each set I only answered the questions that
I could/felt were correct (this means I did not answer some because
neither answer fit or because both answers fit).

		results - pedagogue - schoolteacher?????

Second time I added the answers where both fit (in other words
both a and b were checked and counted).

		results - Fieldmarshall????

We all know that neither of these two fit my personality, don't
	we!!!

Well so much for tests being accurate. Fieldmarshall indeed.
Why I didn't even answer all the questions.

Actually Peggy, just from what I've read of you in here, I would
have suggested the Fieldmarshal (ENTJ) as a type that might fit you. Don't get
too hung up about the Fieldmarshal title. It just refers to the fact that
ENTJ often end up in charge of any endeavor that get involved in, frequently
without meaning to (and mystified as to how it happened :-) ).

Embaressingly enough, I just found out I remembered my scores
incorrectly. I'm still an incredibly strong ENTJ is just that my T was much
stronger than I remembered. I said in the base note that it was 37. Try *57*!

	E - 33
	N - 15
	T - 57
	J - 31

Something to consider while taking the test. When answering the
questions imagine yourslef *either* at home *or* at work. You can have
different styles each place. A co-worker took the short test yesterday and came
up with that he was an ENTJ. That didn't really fit. His preference on J/P
was not marked, so we looked up the ENTP as well and it is a dead ringer for
him at work. Upon talking about it, we decided that *at home* he really is a
ENTJ. So if one of your preferences is "mushy" you may be preferring one thing
at home and another at work. Read both descriptions and see what applies to
you.

The short form test is a good "sorter" (ie. it narrows you done to two
or three type to chose from) but the long test I've found to be much more
acurate in assigning a type.

I'll have to try the "non-binary" test that someone entered here.
I have a feeling it would be more useful than the other short test.

Your temperament is NT, NF, SJ or SP You have a LOT in common with
other of your temperament. The similarities outweigh the differences. For
example NT are often scientists, and INTP might be really theoretical, an INTJ
might apply the theory that an INTP comes up with and an ENTJ might be their
manager, but they all have the same interest in designing abd buidling systems
that give them a common ground

Some miscellaneous stats from various sources (These are all %'s of
the general population):

NT - 12%
NF - 12%
SP - 38%
SJ - 38%

SJ's comprise 60% of all managers

		NT 8%
		SJ 56%
		SP 2% (Usually Industrial Arts)

ENFJ - 5%
INFJ - 1%
ENFP - 5%

Amazing! I finally took the test and scored firmly as INFJ -- an
Author. Is it coincidence that I earn my living writing for Digital?
I also noted that some combination of two of those letters places me
in the teacher category. Is it coincidence that I used to earn my
    living as a teacher?

The part that worries me is being categorized with only 1% of the
population as an INFJ while INXX places me with only 4% of the
population (though Ann Quayle and Jody Bobbitt are respected
    counterparts).

I went back and looked at the MB tests I took in 1985 and 1986. Then I
took the tests again today, both the 70 question test and 32 question
    test. Here are the results:

    32 question test:

    1985 results - I/16, E/24; N/21, S/19; T/14, F/26; P/13, J/27 or ENFJ

    1986 results - I/13, E/27; N/27, S/13; T/7, F/34; P/18, J/22 or ENFJ

    1990 results - I/13, E/27; N/26, S/14; T/13, F/27, P/23, J/17 or ENFP

    70 question test:

    1990 results - I/2, E/8; N/17, S/3; T/8, F/12; P/15, J/5 or ENFP

What this all means to me is that basically I think that parts of the
description for both the ENFP and ENFJ represent my personality
fairly accurately. Mostly I view these descriptions as information to
be aware of, to reflect upon and integrate into my opportunities for
personal and professional growth. These fluctuations in score reflect
the concept that nothing in life is static, not even what I consider my
    hard-wired core personality.

I think that these kinds of discussions are great fun. Thanks for
    starting the base note!

345.55Intuition vs. SensingTCC::HEFFELSushido - The way of the tunaFri Aug 31 1990 15:5856
Excerpts from _Please Understand Me_ pp. 16-19.

Tracey
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Intuition vs. Sensation

The person who has a natural preference for sensation probably describes
himself first as *practical*, while the person who has a natural preference for
for intuition probably chooses to describe himself as *innovative*.... Seventy-
five percent of the general population reports a preference for sensation
while 25 percent indicates a preference for intuition [Bradway 1964].

Sources of Misunderstanding-

Although extraversion and introversion are important differences in
understanding ourselves and others, especially others we live with, these
preferences are minor compared with sensation and intuitive ways of thinking
about things. The two preferences of sensation and intuition are, of any of
the preferences, the source of the most miscommunication, misunderstanding,
vilification, defamation, and denigration. *This difference places the widest
gulf between people.* ...

...The sensation types notice the actual and want to deal with that. They focus
on what actually happened rather than worrying too much about what might have
been or what will be in the future. These people remain in reality and, when
work is the issue, tolerate no nonsense. They usually are accurate in
observing detail, perhaps because, when a sensible type approaches something,
his eyes tend to pick up a specific element. This is quite different from the
intuitive who, when entering a situation, seems to scan, glance, radiate at
things and people, at times aware only of that which is related to his current
preoccupation, missing details noted by the sensible....

...The difference between intuitives and sensibles is most noticeable in their
attitude about child-rearing. The intuitive parent, especially if augmented by
an intuitive spouse, is likely to worry if the child doesn't spend much time
daydreaming and fantasizing and is not captured and intrigued by the more
fanciful tales and myths. It is as if such parents want their offspring to
develop their imaginations by utilizing them daily. Nothing is more valued by
the extreme intuitive than a vivid imagination....

...In contrast, the sensible parent becomes concerned should the child spend
what seems an inordinate amount of time in fantasy. one must develop one's
*usefulness*. The child should spend much of his time outdoors, playing
practicing -- and when older, working....

Cue Words -

...People who prefer sensation, for example tend to value *experience* and the
wisdom of the *past* , and want to be *realistic, while the people who prefer
intuition tend to value *hunches*, and a vision of the *future*, and are likely
to be *speculative*. The S person depends on perspiration where the N person
is more likely to depend on inspiration. Words such as *actual*,
*down-to-earth*, *no-nonsense*, *fact*, *practical*, and sensible are music to
S people; words such as *possible*, *fascinating*, *fantasy*, *fiction*,
*ingenious*, and *imaginative* are apt to light the eyes of N people.

Yeah, I had problems with getting a consistent answer too. I tried both
tests, and found myself to be a bit of a karma chameleon: I was conscious
that most of my answers would vary depending on my mood, or that both
alternatives could be good, but that it could depend largely on who I
was dealing with at the time.

I took the first test, and I came out as an I*TP (that's an artisan or an
architect, if I remember correctly. This definitely does not "click").
Then I took the second, and came out an ESTJ. (That's an administrator.
Well, maybe.)  So I redid the first, and came out an INTJ (a scientist;
okay, that might fit too). But the first 2 were always near the center.

After reading the descriptions and some of the other replies, I'd have to
conclude that I am probably best characterized as a shy ENTJ (That's a
fieldmarshal. Now ask yourself: what good is a shy fieldmarshal??)

I took an online version of the test that was longer, and my new results
were:
	E 33
	N 43
	T 31
	P 43

I am curious what those numbers are out of? I changed from J to P, and
pretty strongly too...I wonder, I think J is more accurate, but I never
felt really comfortable about it. My "E" was a lot less strong in this
one...I think I am **very** E, though. My T was again weak, but not
as much as last time (where it was divided between T and F equally.)
I think that's pretty accurate.

I would be curious to see what job types were recommended for what
combinations (other than "fieldmarshal").

Interestingly I have been observing my own behavior recently and realized
that I do think fieldmarshal fits me well. What it comes down to is I
make decisions. I may not have all the facts, no consensus may be
reached, but a decision must be made, so I make it. I am usually the one
when, in a group of people who are arguing about where to eat or what to
do I will put my foot down and say "Let's stop talking about it and do
*this*." I have found in my experience that it is more important that a
decision is *made* than that the decision is correct. And a lot of the
questions on the MB test seemed to be related to decision making.

Many years ago, during one of the mother-daughter battles that
plagued my adolescence, my mother accused me of being a person who
"builds castles in the air and then tries to move into them."

Well, this test says she was right. On the version in .1, I'm
    INTP -- architect.

The outcome itself was a bit of a surprise. I expected ISFP,
artist, somehow. But even more of a surprise was how emphatic it
was. I wasn't even close on any of the choices. My actual scores
    were:

    E - 1	S - 2 T - 12 J - 4
    I - 9	N - 17 F - 7 P - 14

My first reaction was, "Architect? Me? Likes to build and design
systems? Me? Wait a minute, I'm the one who likes to sit in her
office and write, with occasional excursions for parties and
    lunches!"

And then I thought, "Yeah. You're the one who spends every waking
hour and half of her sleeping ones building an entire imaginary
    UNIVERSE, for cripe's sake."

I also took the version Justine posted in another note, and came
out with a much less definitive score because it let me waffle
instead of forcing me to make honest yes or no decisions. I
noticed, too, that it had this culture's typical assumption that
people who think are unemotional -- a bias that the test in .1
lacks. I like its very neutral presentation, so you don't feel
like you're committing a moral sin by saying that you prefer to
draw conclusions based on unemotional logic. Logic doesn't have
    to be unemotional!

I took the class too, and came out ENFP yet again (35,9,3,11).

I'm one of those that "gives life an extra squeeze" according to the
    book.

It was amazing how well my description fit me, and I realize that my N
and P scores would have been much higher if my Mom's years of drilling
SJ characteristics into my head didn't work.

Taking that class also helped me to see problems that occured within my
family. My father, brother, and I are all strong NP's, while my Mom is
a really strong SJ type. Needless to say, my parents are divorced.
I've managed to adapt and develop SJ characteristics, but my brother
hasn't, and it's caused a lot of friction between him and my Mom.
I'm going to bring the book home some day and let my Mom read it, maybe
she'll be better able to understand my brother.

Would one of you mind looking up INTP and telling me what it says?
You can send it off line if you'd rather.

    thanks,

The description is several pages long but some highlights are.

INTP - "A Love of problem solving"

INTP's are the classic absent inded professor.

They are very precise in thought and language

Gender issues are "especially pointed" for the intp female.

INTP's tend to one-plus everything to death :-).

As parents INTPs are very patient and accepting of differences in
children. "INTP have an amazing tolerance and support for each child's
pursuit of her or her own course."

INTP's have a live and let live life style.

Famous INTP's are Linus (of Peanuts fame), Carl Jung, and Albert
Einstein.

I just took the long form in a class I'm taking and came out a raging
NFP and a borderline E/I with E winning by a nod. On the handout we got
ENFPs are described as "squeezing that extra ounce out of life". Hmmm,
not sure how to take that. :*) liesl
