G'Day, Yesterday was DECday at the Australian chapter of DECworld '90. A lot of the Sydney employees were taken by coach to Canberra for the day. Apart from seeing all the great products actually doing something worthwhile (instead of running diags in the repair centre) it was good to see a lot of women who knew a lot about what we sell. From this notesfile I have learned that in the US there are many women making their way in the technical side of things but over here in Oz I know of probably only three or four female technical staff! It really is a temendously male dominated arena in Australia. I walked over to a display of our new FDDI Optic Fibre Network products and was greeted by a very nice American lady who would have put a lot of our network experts to shame. During the course of the day, I spoke with many technically oriented women but unfortunately NONE of them were Australian - they were all from the US. This is not just a DEC problem either. All of the trade shows that I see are usually put on entirely by Australian companies without bringing in loads of people from overseas and the only women you see at those displays are there to attract people with what they are/aren't wearing. It seems that Australia has a long way to go before we see a more equitable mix of males/females in technical roles :-(. David. (Becoming more feminist as the days go by)

G'Day Again, Forgot to say that I hope I didn't miss any American =wn=ers at DECworld. I didn't see any familiar names (except for one male) so I don't think so. Were any of you here?? David.

David, I was the technical backup person at 3 booths for DecWorld in Boston and there were a couple of other technical women there too. Yes, it is nice to see things changing a bit. When I was introduced as one of the engineers on the product, most people still dropped their jaws and stared at me. Only one person, (male), actually wouldn't listen to me. (But listened quite well when my male counterpart came out of the bathroom. The man actually physically blocked me out of the conversation.) But, still things are not too bad here in the US. 2 years ago, I was at Dexpo West, in the same position, and I hardly got any respect. Maybe if more people have attitudes like yours, things will change over there! (By the way, the product that I worked on is right next to the FDDI stuff. Dec MCC for Ultrix. A great SNMP product for Ultrix!) Rachael

David, Thank you for the compliment. I'm the "nice American lady at the FDDI booth". I''m usually just a read-only womannoter but wanted to thank you for your comments. You're right though, I've been to Australia 3 times (I work in GIA Area tech support for SWS) and I don't believe I've met any women at a customer or even within DEC who would be consider "Technical". It really is strange to see how alike Australia can be to the U.S. in some ways and so different in others. Debbie
318.4 | Maybe =wn= badges should be worn at DECshows | GIDDAY::WALES | David from Down-under | Thu Sep 13 1990 21:51 | 12 |
G'Day, Another R/O noter comes out of the woodwork. If I'd have known you were from here I would have chatted to you even more. Your knowledge of FDDI eclipsed mine by 1000% (I'm just hanging in there with Ethernet) but at least I know a bit more about it now. You are the first non-Australian =wn=er that I have met and I didn't even know it :-(. David.

David, I have to admit that I only read =wn= occasionally. I tend to be at most network events in Oz so look for me next time. Debbie
318.6 | Please let us know if you're visiting | GIDDAY::WALES | David from Down-under | Sun Sep 16 1990 09:08 | 14 |
G'Day, I hope I (and any other Aussie noters) can catch up with you next time you visit. Unfortunately I don't get to go to many of the DEC shows but I will keep my eyes open. If it's on in Sydney then there is a much better chance of being able to go. Might I also suggest that anybody visiting like this place a note in the 'Visits From Afar' note. Realising that people were here after they've gone home is no good! David. |
