311.0. "Reaction to sexist ad" by CUPMK::SLOANE (It's boring being king of the jungle.) Wed Aug 22 1990 09:46

The following is a letter of mine published yesterday (Aug. 21, 1990) in the
Concord (N.H.) Monitor. It should be self explanatory. If I get any replies
I'll let you know.

Bruce

    To the editor,

Merchants Nissan of Concord has been advertising trucks frequently
on the cable TV channels. The ad features numerous young white
women in bathing suits, plus a few pickups and vans.

Although I have nothing against women in bathing suits, I fail to
see how this tasteless and offensive ad helps Merchants to sell
trucks. For one thing, the ad has nothing but young-appearing
white women in bathing suits who are draped over, on top of, and
in front of vehicles. There are so many women in bathing suits
that it is difficult to see the trucks themselves, so it becomes
hard to remember that the actual purpose of the ad is to sell
    trucks.

More important is the fact this blatant display of sex, race, and
age exploitation is so outrageous that many people of all sexes,
races, and ages will refuse to have any dealings at all with
    Merchants.

If Merchants feels that they cannot sell trucks without displaying
human beings in bathing suits, I suggest they include people of
all ages, sexes, races, and body types in their ads -- young, old,
white, black, Oriental, fat, thin, handsome, and ugly. This would
be a more interesting ad, and would sell more trucks, too.

In the meantime, I strongly recommend that Merchants immediately
pull this ad off the air and offer a public apology for their
    tasteless and offensive advertising.

    Bruce Sloane

Personally, I'd NEVER buy a truck, computer, or piece of lab equipment
unless I knew it was safe to lounge on while I wear my bikini.

I think there's even an OSHA standard...

    Re: last several

    Thanks for everybody's encouragement.

No, I didn't send a copy to Merchants. I thought about it, but decided
not to. They can read about it in the paper. I'd like to send a copy
to Nissan corporate headquarters (the ad was locally produced - not
    national).

Just don't lounge in your bikini on a black truck on a hot August
day. You may get more than a sunburn. <smirk>

BTW if we're in silly mode at the moment, I've taken the title of this
topic up with one of our esteemed moderators, and she assured me it was
    an oxymoron...

And I have permission to quote her! ;-)

    Nothing much so far.

I received a short supportive letter from a newspaper reader thanking
me for the letter, but there have no other replies, letters, or
comments in or out of the newspaper.

    Stay tuned ...
