304.0. "Women's Equality Day 1990: what's happening?" by SCARGO::CONNELL (Amateur Engineering) Fri Aug 17 1990 15:29

According to one calendar in our warehouse, Sunday, August 26th is
Women's Equality Day. Now, while I feel that women should be treated
equally as a matter of course and I try to do so and only give it as
much thought as I would breathing, in other words a natural function, I
realize that this is Earth, USA, 20th century and not everyone does
this. I guilty of it too but I'm trying. I'm glad to see that a day is
set aside for my favorite cause to call attention to it. Now for the
    question.

What events, rallies, etc. are being held. Whose speaking at them and
more importantly (to me anyway) is something being done in Nashua.

I'm a confirmed fanatical pedestrian and Nashua, N.H. is about my
traveling limit. I'd like to attend something in thsi area if possible.

How nice. They have to set aside one special unlike-no-other day for
Women's Equality.

Will women get paid according to the male salary scale for one day?
Will women not be raped or beaten on this day?
Will daughters not be molested on this day?
Will Bush step aside to let a woman run the country for a day?
Will the top business leaders (98% male, isn't it?) take the day off
and ask women to take their place for a day?
Will the cosmetics industry stop shoving makeup and self-improvement
ads down our throats for a day?
Will lesbians get to walk arm-in-arm in public for a day without men
calling them names and harassing them on this day?
Will those sexist males in =wn= actually _listen_ to women for a day?
  (A whole day!)

Yeah, right.

Carla (who celebrates women's equality every day!)

Oooh, and maybe Hallmark has a card out already to help
    us celebrate Equality Day?

Let's see, how would that card read, "This one's for you...",
or "We knew you could do it [for one day that is]."

I don't like the idea anymore then you do, to the 2 previous. I just
spotted it on a calendar and thought I could ask about events
celebrating it. I didn't mean to start anything. I take offense at it
myself. Like I said in the base note, equality s/b something just done
without thinking. We are in the real world here and some people need a
push. I was hoping to find out some ways to help.

That might depend on whether the men have anything to say.

While I agree with the sentiment that one day isn't going to make
squat worth of difference in women's lives, I feel I should
mention that I believe Aug 26th is the anniversary of women
getting the vote. As small as gesture as it is, it's one of the
few that can remind us where we've been, and how far we have
    to go.

(As if those of use who note here didn't realize the latter.)
