Well of course I want to be on the List, even though I'm not much of
a joiner.
But what I really need is some advice about becoming a glass-chewing
feminist (GCF). I already consider myself a radical feminist (you'll
recall that =wn= V1 defined a radical feminist as one who actually
expected behavior to change as a result of feminist goals and ideals).
I think I'm ready to take the next step -- to, say, GCF third class.
But to what does 'glass' in GCF refer? Is it a drink container or
an amorphous inorganic substance/supercooled liquid. Should I start
with fiberglass cloth? Or dixie cups? What are the requirements?
Thanks in advance,
JP

now that we have a 'policy', how do you insure that someone is 'aware' that
you are electonically ignoreing them? I mean, i often leave this file
for days/weeks at a time when work intrudes on my noteing life. i wouldn't
want someone to mistakenly think i was ignoreing them when i wasn't,,,, or
to not be aware when i WAS...
should we just send a pointer when we want to expres our 'ignore-ingness'?
(i did NOT want to say ignorance, so ok if i coin a new word?)
would this be allowed under the P&P of -wn-? if we worded it 'play-niced'
enough?

303.25 | /ignore | TLE::D_CARROLL | Assume nothing | Fri Aug 17 1990 15:05 | 23 |
| In my younger days :-) I frequented a *real-time* interactive conferencing
system (called CONNECT). Frequently people would bug other people (where
bugging meant sending them unwanted messages frequently.) Since bugging
was *truly* distracting, in that it filled your screen with garbage and
beeped incessantly, in addition to being offensive, the CONNECT programmers
implemented a command call IGNORE.
This caused a message to be sent to the person you were IGNORING saying
"so-and-so is now ignoring you." They were thereafter prevented from
sending you a message. They could, in turn, IGNORE *you* if they wished.
This was good in that it 1) kept your screen from getting filled with
unwanted stuff and 2) notified the person you were upset at that you were
upset with them. It was bad because if they changed their ways or
wanted to apologize, there is no way they could do so.
Our own little method of ignoring is less drastic, but correspondingly less
usefull (we still have to read, or at least next-unseen though messages
from people we don't wnt to deal with.)
I do think something akin to an IGNORE to a kill file would be useful.

"NotesVamps" -- what a great term, Mark :-) !!
I have wondered what (from other replies) the term "vamping"
(to vamp) means, but in your context,
"...those persons who are sucking the energy right out of this notesfile."
, it's quite clear (and I agree). Who you refer to as "NotesVamps" are
the people I used to refer to as someone who was pissing on the file like a
dog that wants to leave its scent. But your term is much more accurate,
thanks!

Whew. I thought I was alone, Martin. Thanks. Neither am I,
but reading the last 34 replies took me back to 4th grade where
some of the kids used to stand in circles around and ugly kid, or
a small kid or something and call him/her nasty names and taunt
them.
I really appreciate the memories of yester-year, but no thanks, I
didn't participate in them then, and I won't now.
Someone called this a "PC" topic to start. If taunting, goading
and intimidating other people into "submission" is PC, then no

Actually, your analogy is backwards. The people who volunteered to
be put on "The List" (of the accused) were essentially acting in
defense of those being taunted.
It was a way of saying, "If you're going to call those people names,
then call me the same name, too."
> I really appreciate the memories of yester-year, but no thanks, I
> didn't participate in them then, and I won't now.
Implying that people are "children" when you disagree with them is
name-calling in itself. Make no mistake about it.
> Someone called this a "PC" topic to start. If taunting, goading
> and intimidating other people into "submission" is PC, then no
> thanks.....
Does this mean you were considering being PC? (This comes as quite a
surprise since I've seen you reassuring everyone that you're NOT at
all PC - that is, when you aren't busy reassuring everyone about your
contempt for Womannotes.)
The reference to "PC" was light-hearted, self-deprecating humor (as it
almost always is when people claim to be "PC" themselves.)
Heaven forbid that people should joke about themselves - it's surely
the time to take the joke and bonk them over the head with it.

re: taunting, goading and intimidating other people
Hmmm,,, I saw one woman say that she intended to "ignore" people who VIOLATED
the charter of -wn-. (yup, the FWO is only a request, but that's because
it has to be by DEC P&P. However, it IS the charter in THIS notesfile that
there WILL be strings that are restricted for WRITING in. anyone can READ it,
and reply in an alternative string.)
anyways, after one woman said she intended to ignore those who ignored our
charter, several others spoke up and said they either already were following
such a policy, or intended to start.
Then one person started a list of those who announced that they were following
this policy, AND PUBLISHED IT.
(historical note: throughout western history, being on a "LIST" *usually* means
that you are being singled out for punishment or other disciplinary action,
blackballed, inqusitions, etc)
LOTS of people, then stated that if a list is going to be kept, they wanted to
be on it. Usually simple statements like "me too."
so the question is,
Who exactly was taunting, goading, and intimidating others??!!??

respond to the correspondence of someone. In the past it was used -with
somewhat mixed results- to stop communicating/responding to someone who
signed his mail EDP, or at least that's how I interpreted the list.
And signed it myself. It may be more that coincidence (but i'm not
sure) that that person no longer participates in this conference.
It is currently being used -with appropriate discression to stay within
corporate protocol/laws/whatever- to serve as a kind of petition/pledge
not to interact with or respond to me. So you can interpret your name

just hit next unseen instead of reading notes that get you mad (and
then getting mad or even).
As a moderator and as a human being, I cannot condone any kind of
public commitment to "shun" someone -- reminds me too much of the awful
way kids can treat each other. I'll delete this whole string if it
feels like it's being directed at someone.
However, I encourage everyone to employ next unseen instead of
letting a NOTESFILE get you upset, and if pledging to do that here
makes it easier for folks to resist the urge to bicker, please go for
it.
