| G'Day,
Depends on the mood. If I want nice relaxing female music then
Barbara Streisand is the way to go. If I want something with a little
more blast then it's pretty hard to beat Tina Turner.

album. All the songs are great.
Billie Holiday, what can I say? Her voice is liquid velvet. "Strange
Fruit" is a haunting and terrifying song. She goes from light and easy
to deadly serious in the range of what she could sing.
Joan Biaz (sp?) her songs led a generation to protest injustice.
Grace Slick, she lead us through the acid nights. Feed your head.
Koko Taylor, "I'd Rather Go Blind". Another great blues voice.

Is this perhaps Olga Romn? We saw The Olga Romn Group at the Regatta
Bar (Charles Hotel) in Cambridge a couple of weeks ago. She's a great
vocalist and the group's music had a lot more meat to it than most of
the Brazilian pop stuff around.

Mike Oldfield has featured a number of female backup vocalists on
his albums. I don't know if she's on FIVE MILES OUT, but the one
he's featured most often, I believe, is his sister Sally. She's
an equally talented musician, who has a number of her own albums.
Unfortunately, she never hit it big in the US, and only her first
album was ever released here. She seems to be big in Germany,
however, and a little less so in the UK, and I've got about a dozen
UK or German import CD's of hers. She and brother Mike also put out
an album together in the late 60's under the name "Sallyangie".

I don't think she was the one on Five Miles Out though. Maybe. I've
only seen three MO albums here in the States. I was shocked (and
completely thrilled) when I was CD shopping in Germany and found
over 15 of his albums I never knew existed, on sale. Woof! My charge

Kirsty McColl has a voice that sort of makes my hair stand on end. That
might not sound complimentary but I'd like to hear some more of it. I've
only heard her on two cuts, both times singing with the Pogues. One was
in "Miss Otis Regrets / Just One of Those Things" on the Red, Hot and Blue
album and the other was one of the songs on the Pogues "If I Should Fall
From Grace With God." Can some one point me at more of her work?

This is the tribute to Cole Porter mentioned by Sinead O'Connor at her
grammy (?) speech. Her version of "You Do Something To Me" has had a
lot of air play but there are also great vocals by women such as
kd lang ("So In Love With You") and Annie Lenox ("Every Time We Say
Goodbye"). I think it is a great album but be warned that there are
some cuts that probably cause Cole Porter to spin in his grave (e.g.,
Tom Waits on "It's Alright With Me").

Kirsty has a solo album out called KITE. Incidentally, she comes
from a great musical tradition -- her father is the late, great
Ewan MacColl.

Does anyone know what the music-making entity called "2 Nice Girls" is
all about? I like their name but I'm trying to resist buying yet

| This is really pulling things out of the back of my mind, but I think
they're a couple of women who put out an album of all cover tunes and
one original, with the original called "I Spent my Last 10 Dollars on
Beer and Condoms" or something similar. Music was definitely guitar
based, although I can't remember whether it was more folk or rock
oriented.
The "Beer and Condoms" song was mildly popular at WMBR, but then again
I might have the wrong band.

| I have a 2 Nice Girls tape - I like it.
The quote previously mentioned is "I spent my last ten dollars on birth
control and beer/life was much easier when I was sober and queer." The
quote alone is worth the price of the tape. :-)
2 Nice Girls also won some award or other recently from some group or other
along the lines of Gay and Lesbian Anti-defamation League. aren't you glad
you asked? :-)

| I'll second D!'s opinion of Two Nice Girls album, 2 Nice Girls. I like
it! Nice vocals and lyrics. I don't know who to compare them to.
They're in a class by themselves.
At one time I thought I'd type in the lyrics to "I Spent My Last $10"
but then...nah!

| _i spent my last $10_ starts like this...imagine a twangy hurtin' song
in 3/4 time...
when i was a young girl like normal girls do
i looked to a woman's love to help get me through
i never needed any more than a feminine touch
i hated the thought of kissing a man
it really was too much
i did not drink; i did not smoke
i did not say `god damn'
i was polite; i was sensitive
before i loved a man
my family were proud of me
proud of what i am
and then along came lester
and my tale of woe began...
they have an album (_2 nice girls_, mostly originals), and an ep (_like a
version_, mostly covers). the high point of _like a version_ is their
astonishing version of _i feel love_...
enjoy!

Obviously, she's not yet well known. An amazing vocalist from Britain,
she can go from High C down to my range (pretty flat baritone), and she
writes all her own songs as well! Check out her three releases (the
third is brand new; may not be in stores yet):
