278.0. "Drastic career change - any advice?" by AUSTIN::BOGGESS (Jean Boggess Norton) Wed Aug 08 1990 12:40

I have been a PSS Software Specialist for the last 8 years in the
field and it has been slowly driving me crazy. I'm past the point
of even considering anything in the computer field. I'm sick of
    it!

The tough part is that it is something I am good at. I can
problem solve, troubleshoot, keep customers happy...all it takes
to be a good PSS software specialist. What I WANT to do is
drastically change my career and open a dress shop.

This is a pretty drastic change with a LOT of risks. I have
analyzed my original motivations to go into computers (which had
to do with validating my intelligence, not to have a "woman's
job", etc.), and I no longer find them important. I feel that in
order to further explore my identity I need to do something on my
    own, without an authority figure.

My question is 1- do you know anyone who has given up their career to
do what they really want? 2- Any advice?

    I welcome your comments.

    Jean:

Can you afford to take a year's sabbatical to make this happen? You
have the advantage of an excellent resume and confidence in what you
can do, in the past 8 years' work. I'd encourage you to go for it!

This notes file would be a good place to discuss where you want to go,
how much experience you've had in the rag trade, whether you know
exactly what kind of shop you want, how familiar you are with
    retailing, etc.

It would also be a good place to ask for input from -wnoters- about
what we wish we could find in the way of clothing.

Of course, the caution must be sounded: the economy doesn't look good
here (of course, you may not be here in Massachusetts - where are
you?), and I think retail is having trouble.

You'll find that we noters are an opinionated bunch. I know I really
like clothing; I know what I like and I don't (usually) see it. I read
Lears and Mirabella and occasionally old, tired Yogue and Harpers
Bazaar. It may be asking for a rathole to discuss what we like/what we
wish we could find. Maybe it deserves another note, so we could go on with
    discussing drastic career changes.

Been there myself. 2 years for DEC and 2.5 for someone else. I was
very very good at it but it drove me crazy. I also thought I had to
get out of computers completely. But I just came in from the field
instead. After 8 years in engineering my sanity is (mostly :-)) back.
I'm having fun again too. Consider giving other computer related
jobs a chance. You may just need a change less drastic then leaving
    computers totally.

278.4Show some caution, but...COOKIE::CHENMadeline S. Chen, D&SG MarketingWed Aug 08 1990 20:2115

I have a sister who, as a tenured professor in a well-known midwestern
university, decided to chuck it to become a nurse. As a biologist,
with lots of post-doc research & publications in genetics behind her,
she was much more suited to be an MD.

BUT - she wanted to have a job that allowed for the nurturing function.
Today, she is a happy (if somewhat financially poorer) nurse in a
critical care infant ward in Chicago.

    Do it!

You might find it interesting to read a book called "Do What You Love, The
Money Will Follow" by Marsha Sinetar (sp?).
