275.10 | Children, logic and stereotypes | TLE::D_CARROLL | Assume nothing | Wed Aug 08 1990 10:57 | 20 |
| My two main causes are children and rationality.
I feel compelled to help children (last year I was a Big Sister and I
am considering doing it again.) I consider myself a child advocate,
though my views on the subject differ largely from others who identify
themselves as such.
I feel the need to spread the cause of rationality where-ever I go.
Whatever people are talking about, when I see logic abused, information
misinterpreted and twisted, I feel compelled to insert logic and
facts, no matter what my personal feelings on the subject. This has
gotten me in trouble in =wn= but I feel strongly about it and will continue.
Hmm, guess I have a third cause and that is the breaking of stereotypes
of whatever kind I can. Everywhere. I think the media distorts
everything, and it is the responsibility of everyone with *real* knowledge
about a subject to pass that knowledge on to others to counteract the
distortion of the media.

I believe that family is the core of society and if we manage to have a

goal. Besides that, when I have the time, I like my job, I like
painting, sewing, traveling... having parties with friends... etc. etc.

You won't guess what my cause is????
Nope
Not even close...
Okay I will tell you, since you asked so nicely.
To have a 1985 Red Porshe 911 with black interior to drive
all year round.
Told you you wouldn't guess it.
The second impossible cause is world hunger, then comes
peace and justice for everyone and then a 1984 944 deep
blue Porshe, then religious freedom (as long as it hurts
no one and is extended to everyone), then elimiation of
multi-national economic oppression, then 1965 black MG.
Any questions????

| I have been carrying a small cotton tote in my purse for the past few
months...it is rather non-descript and doesn't take much space. When
I go to places like CVS or a card store it is right there and I use
it and forego the plastic or paper bag that the store offers. The tote
is washable and I even press it with the iron...
I like this as opposed to most of the ones that are made of a heavier
material and our bulky and awkward to carry around.
I have been searching for a place to purchase a similar one for my
family members for Christmas (we are all into recycling) and have
finally found something appropriate. If any of you are interested
let me know and I will tell you how you can get one. It will be
printed with a message...but I am sure you will love it. ;-)

| Over the weekend, I didn't feel very well, so I decided to go shopping.
After a long trip and $70 poorer, I brought back the CD sets of
both Verdi and Britten's Requiems. The weekend was subsequently
drown out and just disappeared.
Jane Pauley told a story tonight about a homeless man in New York city.
For the last ten years, Eddie lives on the street sleeping
in a cardboard box the type that is not very different from the ones
used to pack my huge stereo speakers. Outside of a high fashion shop
is a heat exhaust where Eddie places his box at night and if it rains,
he will put a plastic cover on top of it. Before dawn, he will get
up and wash himself and prepare for another day. When we see him on the
street, he looks like an ordinary citizen minding his own business.
One day a jogger run into him in the early morning. Katherine is an
accountant and she decided to become Eddie's friend. During the
interview, Eddie said he would not accept charity, and would never go
to a shelter which in his mind is not a good place. But he would
accept help from his friend. When asked why he always get up early and
move away from the fashion shop, he said, it wouldn't be good to the
business of the shop.
He goes to a restaurant for his meal every day, and the owner said
that Eddie is nice and he is clean. Late in the afternoon, when
everyone is going home after work, Eddie goes back to his box and
eat his supper while watching thousands of people rushing pass him.
On his sixties' birthday, Katherine brought him a jacket (Eddie
does like to dress well), and Eddie thanked her graciously.
Right now, Katherine is making an effort to get him some money
from the social security, and he still remembers his social
security number after all those years. Katherine hopes that Eddie
will eventually get a room of his own.
Sometime, Eddie behaves strangely as Pauley commented, perhaps
is because he has all the time of the day with nothing to do
and no one to talk to.
I don't remember the detail of the interview with Katherine, but
when asked what she saw in Eddie, Katherine said grace. That some
how made much sense to me. She then said that he survived.
Eddie survived, not just in the sense that he is still alive and
healthy, but that his moral, his character, dignity and human
decency too endured under such recalcitrant circumstance. To me this
is a true miracle--a triumph of human spirit under extreme suffering.
When he said that what he wants is what everyone wants and that is to live
well in a calm and serene voice and a face of almost Socratic grace,
it was as if he was singing the Requiem of Verdi and Britten. One can
only imagine the kind of Requiem he has been singing to himself for the last
ten years.
God have mercy on us.

they probably already know them.
This might have impacted me more because I just came back from "The
City" and I saw so many "Eddies".
