216.0. "The Artists of Womannotes" by CSC32::CONLON (Let the dreamers wake the nation...) Mon Jun 25 1990 11:52

Over the years in Womannotes, we've been aware that we've
had novelists and poets (poetesses?) in our midst, along
with a variety of other artists and craftspersons.

My question -- what sort of artistic talents/hobbies/crafts
do YOU enjoy outside of work?

Singing, painting, writing, playing instruments, designing,
needlecrafts, or anything else that brings out your artistic
nature -- I'd like to know what other people in this
conference like to do (women and men)!

I "used" to be artistic in high school and I kind of lost
the "mind-set" once I got into college. The only things "creative"
things that I have the time to do are - to encourage my daughter
(almost 5) to be creative, to furnish my home and to landscape
my yard!!! I wish I have more time to do other things!
The part that I really enjoy is to make/build toys for my
daughter out of ordinary household objects. We do spend
considerable amount of money on store-bought toys, but it is
     	not the same.

As for me, I took 7 years of classical piano lessons as a teenager.
I've got a nice piano now, and intend to start refresher lessons this
Fall. I miss playing so much - I'm anxious to get back to the level
I'd reached before I stopped playing (when my son Ryan was born.)

I'm also a writer of short stories. In my senior year of college,
in 1976, I won the Creative Writing Award from the English department
of my school (although I was a Philosophy major.)

In a past life (before computers,) I worked as a camera operator in
a television studio. It was tremendous as a creative outlet. I also
worked as a technical director (sometimes doing special effects for
productions involving music.) The directors liked having me work on
musical productions because my music training enabled me to time my
camera or special effects moves to fit in well with musical phrases.

Camera work (composition, etc.) was wonderful. It's the closest thing
I've ever found to writing stories (in the sense of enabling someone
else to see things or feel things in a certain way.)

At the moment, I'm in college again (working on a second Bachelors
degree so that I can start on my Masters in the Fall of 1991,) so
most of my hobbies share a very limited amount of spare time. It's
still nice to have these outlets for the time I do have - I'm never,
    	ever bored!

Most of my creativity is output in my singing. I was always involved
in the musicals and concerts in junior high school and high school and
entered into many a talent show (even taking a place holding once in
awhile!) in high school and college. I also play the clarinet, flute
    and piano.

My husband is also quite musical, and the two of us, along with three
other DECcies have formed a band and we played at the DECjam (held
yesterday in Marlboro). It's great to be able to let go and really
sing and feel comfortable about it. I always get nervous before a
performance, but I usually forget the nerves a few minutes into the
songs and do all-right for myself.

I have started dancing again. I am taking a jazz class once a week and
finding it to be great fun. I have dabbled in a few others things.
Painting, weaving, working with dry flowers. I started stenciling in
my kitchen which I think I'll start again. I also have a journal and
do a little writing. Just a little bit of everything to keep it
    interesting.

Well, I can't count photography as a hobby 'cause that's what
I do here. (or, since I have taken the buyout, that's what I used
to do here.) That and videography. (I am/was a Producer/Director)
Music has been a hobby and profession off and on for a number of
years. I just left the blues band I was in, and am now in the studio
in preparation for some local gigs of acoustic music. Am planning
to play out a lot more this summer while I am not in a 9-5 job.
I'm too old to do a day job and steady music at night. :-)
I also run, cycle, ski (down-hill and X-country), flyfish, hike,
and all the usual Colorado behaviors. :-) 'nuff said...

216.6Stained glass windowsRUSTIE::NALEMon Jun 25 1990 18:0519

A few years ago a friend of my sister's taught me how to make
stained glass windows. The first one I made was for my mom for
Mother's Day. I broke more glass than what was in the window,
and I was a few months late completing it, but she loved it
	nonetheless.

I've made a number of windows since. All but one I've given
away as gifts. The exception was the one I made for my DECcie
ex-landlord who saw the ones I made as Christmas gifts and
hired me to make one for him.

I love making them, however I currently live in an apartment
where there's no place to work. I *really* don't care to have
shards of glass in my carpets! Hopefully, I'll be able to take
up my hobby in the near future...

I paint. I write poetry. I write lyrics. I keep a journal. I draw. I
write short stories. I create abstract artwork using whatever materials
intrigue me. And beginning this fall I'll be attending the Art Institute
of Seattle with the intention of becoming a graphic artist and illustrator.

I refinish furniture. I love finding what is under the paint, and I
love the history that shows on the wood underneath. My favorite table
which I use as a desk is pine and nothing I did to it took off the
stains. I'm glad now. It also shows where something like a meat
grinder was attached to one end.

Sometimes I think of taking up another hobby because this one needs
space and good ventilation and uses dangerous chemicals, but so far
this is the one that attracts me.

I've done a little gem cutting in the past with my father, who taught
himself this craft. I liked it then and consider doing it now.

Back when I called the ozone home, I did a lot of whittling -
majoring in pipes ~8-) with a strong sideline in belt-buckles
made from the knots and whorls of oak. I love the look of polished

    Singing, singing, singing.

The a cappella group I'm in is very close harmony -- it's like weaving
with sound. We did street-singing outside Faneuil Hall last night, and
spent about 20 minutes singing in a tunnel, where the acoustics were
    fantastic. It was blissful!

I don't consider my talents 'art' per se, but such as it is, I love.

I do cross-stitch and needlepoint - everything hanging on my walls at
home is a fabric piece I stitched.

I square dance. I love to dance, but not to perform.

I used to sing, and probably will again. Always as part of a group,
and I prefer to be doing the harmonies, and not the melody.

Looking this over - maybe I'm more artistic than I thought.

practicing various aspects of the entertainment craft. I've

I dance, but not your traditional dances. I do "rock ballet". The
movement of my body as I flow up a rock face, the feel of the stone
under my fingers, each careful and precise step... reach... move...
slowly, gracefully, delicately balanced on the tips of my toes as my
outstretched hand reaches for the thin crack... just out of reach.
Gently touching the next hold, slowly, carefully moving my foot to just
the precise spot - and then not moving it at all. That is truly art.

Anyone who has seen good rock climbing knows what I mean about ballet.
A fleeting art, appreciated mostly by the performer, there and then
gone leaving only the rock behind.

I could watch John Bachar, Ron Kauk, Peter Croft, or Lynn Hill climbing
for hours. The Joffrey has nothing on these folks.

I play piano and sing. I'm mostly into classical music these days but
can never seem to get enough practice time. Back in the days when I
was still studying with someone, I entered competitions every year and
always won them. It was a heady experience.

I, also, love to cook and create interesting dishes. Life after Dec
will probably be owning a small, very exclusive, gourmet dining place
where I can entertain at the same time. It would be even better if
I could do this on a boat - preferably a sail boat - a BIG sail boat.
Well one can dream, can't one?

sometimes I sing, but I'm a bit out of practice [so Shawn & Ricky tell me...]

I dance, but not 30 hours a weeks anymore.

these days most of my art involves fabric and threads -- imagining garments or
rooms or hangings or quilts or ... and making them happen.

I also cook.

I photograph things, and people doing stuff [no portraits ... OK, once on our
10th anniversary but that doesn't _really_ count]

since! I started with traditional designs and now I'm trying new
techniques so that I can fiddle around with color, texture and design.
I also do cross-stitch and just finished a major piece which took all

re .25, great reply, Jody, I just *knew* it was you who was doing that
    ;-)

Within the past year or so, I've rediscovered my "artist" self in the
process of exploring my spirituality. I've been making beaded and
feathered talismans and jewelry, incenses and oils, goddess figures
of clay and other materials, labrys's and other womyn-oriented things.

A friend who does talismanic engravings convinced me that my stuff was
not only "ok", but that it was pretty good. Consequently, I joined
into an artisan's collective of three other people, and we took our
stuff to some festivals to sell. At first it was a little hard to
actually sell the stuff I had made, since I invest a great deal of
myself into all of it. (It reminded me of giving away kittens - you
know that they need homes elsewhere, but you grieve when they're gone.)
Eventually, though, I became aware that the people that chose to buy my
things were people that the things were "right" and "meaningful" for,
and it gave me an opportunity to share my spiritual growth with others.
And I got paid for it :-) (Which meant I could buy more tools and
materials and do more work...) It felt really good, boosted my self
esteem, and seemed very validating to me. As a software engineer in
day-to-day life (for the past 14 years) I felt that I had regained
something I had misplaced along the way.

I've started to take a silversmithing class which looks like it may
turn into an apprenticeship of sorts, I'm continuing to try new
materials and new techniques, and I'm working with my three artesan
friends to put together a small mail-order business. Has anyone else
made the transition from doing artwork for oneself to doing it
semi-professionally? I'd like to hear from others about how that felt,
and what differences, if any, it has made in your art.

I play piano, organ, alto and soprano recorders. I've not played a lot
lately, but am starting to resurrect my piano playing. Used to play
recorder and guitar duets with my husband, which was a lot of fun. One
of my big ambitions now is to create and choreograph a musical
freestyle ride for me and my horse. I've been listening to a lot a
music lately trying to find something suitable (probably classical or
rag time). Don't know if I'll ever complete this, but it will be fun
    working on it.

I also knit Aran pattern (aka Irish fishermen) sweaters. I like to
modify the individual patterns to make my own. I also like to
mix-and-match instructions - for example take instructions for making a
vest and add sleeves from instructions for a sweater and makeup
patterns to get something unique that no one else will make. Also I
have yarn that I had spun from the sheep we used to raise (both black
and white), so the sweaters are truly "home-grown".

Baking fancy Christmas cookies is my real speciality. I also do

I started selling them a couple of years ago, last year I sold 250

    chocolates and fancy cakes.

Planning and giving fancy parties and dinners is another thing that
excites me. I really like doing them for other people when there are no
financial limits, you know with all kinds of crystal, china and silver
available for presenting the food, I'm getting excited just writing

I'm a musician, too. I sing and play guitar. I mostly do folk and
women's music. I took a long break from music after I left school,
but in the last few years I've gotten back into it, and it's been
wonderful! I've done a few open-mic performances, and I've sent some
tapes around to some local women's performance spaces. I'm hoping to
do a lot more performing after the election in November (I'm working
on Evelyn Murphy's Governor's campaign, and that keeps me out of the
house at least one night a week and sometimes involves weekends).

Gosh, with all the women in this file who are musicians, I was thinking
that I should have a FWO music-making party at my house. We could have
an "open mic" set for folks who would like to perform and a "Jam" set
for folks who would like to play along with others but not necessarily
be in the limelight -- anyone out there interested? Oh, and of course,
we'd need an audience, too :-)
