| My concept of relationships first came in jr high when I observed what
was going on around me.
Later, my ideas about relationships came from experiences.
I haven't gotten many ideas from the media.

| I think two basic ideas I got about relationships from watching
TV and movies were that (1) in order to be truly happy in life
one must be in a relationship, and (2) that the better looking a
person is the better chance they have of being in a relationship.
In real life, I don't think either of these is always true, and
I think too much emphasis is placed on both.

| yeah, ditto .2
It seems to be a formula in the media that men and women have to
be a cartoon exaggeration of reality to sell. Almost all of the
portrayals of either are strictly fiction. It sets up standards that
neither can live up to or live down.

None!
Most of my ideas have come from my own experiences.

| re .4, I started getting ideas from movies and tv long before I
ever had any experiences. Most people start watching movies and
tv as near infants.
I also got the impression from tv and movies that when people
fell in love, they got married, bought a house and had kids, and
that the man worked and supported the family, and the wife stayed
home and took care of the kids and did the housework. I also got
the idea that for some mysterious reason this life style would bring
a woman more happiness than any other life style she could ever
possibly imagine. Of coure, my age has something to do with the
reason I got these impressions since I started watching TV in the
very early 50's.
In other words, I got the impression that the ultimate goal of any
romantic relationship was marriage. (happily ever after)

| I got the impression that you fell in love, life was perfect and you
lived happily ever after. I thought "perfect" people/lovers/family
didn't fight.
I thought that the ugly duckling would turn into a swan if she just
worked hard enough and made everyone like her. I thought life would be
fair. liesl

| There has for quite some time been a 'normal' portrayed by the media.
It is especially refreshing to this horrible housekeeper and sometimes
overweight person to watch Roseanne. Sydney is no great shakes in the
housekeeping department also.

Part of the reason for that image is because it was a reflection
of the way things were at the time. Other than the fact that things
weren't quite as rosy all of the time, the structure of my family
and the roles we all played was pretty much the same as on THE DONNA
REED SHOW or LEAVE IT TO BEAVER or whatever.

| *I* get the impression that any expression of love between any two
people who are not what is not the National Research Council calls
"reference man" and "reference woman" [Mel Gibson & Christie Brinkley?]
is something to be snickered at and disbelieved.
