Could anyone give me the name of a home-building course in Maine? I saw an article in a local paper last year and cut it out, but it's now lost in my files. Or please give me a pointer to the Home_work Notes file. I thought it was around Bath, Maine. Offered a 3-week course summers, or nights for 10-12 weeks. May have a special program for women. I'm taking the "TFSO" = "package" and leaving DEC on June 15. I am thinking of taking a couse like this if I can get into it this summer. Thanks. Beth

I don't know of one in Maine, but there is one offered in Western Mass outside of Pittsfield. Can't remember the name offhand, but an uncle of my husband's went there a year ago & swears by the place. Says he'll be the contractor on his next home.

I think there are a couple of places in Maine, but the one I know about is The Shelter Institute. Supposed to be a good one - been in business a long time at least. I attended the school in Western Mass about 10 years ago. It's called Heartwood. I chose it because it seemed to have a good curriculum, good people, and because it was located in a really nice place - close to Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow dance, which would be weekend attractions when there weren't classes. In short - it was wonderful. I learned so much, met great people, and feel quite knowledgeable about most aspects of building. Even if I never build my own home, I'm glad to be able to intelligently discuss options with people who do work on my home occasionally - I know how to tell if someone is doing a good job. Good luck in your choices. You can pick up a copy of Fine Homebuilding, or Rodale used to put out a homebuilding magazine - and they usually have advertisements for most of these types of places. Write away for some brochures, compare places, and have fun. Barbara

This may be a little late, but about a year or so ago, Chuck Kramer, from one of the major TV stations in Boston, attended one of these things in Maine. This place built post and beam structures, and most of the work was done with hand tools. After the structure was built and put together, it was taken apart and sold to a customer. Maybe a call to Chuck Kramer is in order. Scott |
