184.1Womannotes Banner at the Pride March and RallyCOGITO::SULLIVANSinging for our livesThu Jun 07 1990 13:5213

Some folks have expressed interest in bringing the Womannotes banner
to the Pride March this Saturday. I want to make sure we have enough
Womannoters to carry the banner, though, so sign in here, or send
me mail if you're planning to go to the march this Saturday. The plan
is to meet at City Hall Plaza at 10:30. The Digital banner will
be there, so look for that. If we bring the Womannotes banner, we'll
stand near the other DEC folks.

Now I just have to figure out what to wear!

I'll help carry (I hope it isn't too heavy.)

re: what to wear? Well, I wonder what the weather is going to be like. Be
a real bummer if it rains for my first Pride March. :-)

It's a way of showing solidarity, Herb. A bunch of us carried the
banner last year...with Pride! Check out 557.* in V2 for the story.

Despite the passage of the civil rights bill, it's still d*mn scary
to do something like marching because of all the fear and hatred
lurking just under the civilised veneer out there. It's a real
eye-opener to be thought a "dyke" or "fag" for the day, even when
you're secure in your heterosexual orientation. Maybe especially
    when you're secure.

I think a community such as ours is strengthened when we can all
join together in celebrating freedom and love together, without
division and with a sense that we're in it for each other...and
    we're never turning back.

Pride is a celebration of life and love. There are no Sexuality
Police carding anyone at the door, so I hope we do have a good
turnout saturday. I'm in (out? :-), for one.

So, it's likely to be hot and sweaty out on the march. They had pop
and munchies at the rally afterward last year, but that didn't help
    beforetime.

Anybody know if it's legal t'drink beer in public in Boston? :-) I
b'lieve my backpack would hold a dozen cans, and even warm is better
    than none.

So who all's going with? C'mon, sign up! We'll go out for ice cream
afterward (or was it drinks and snacks, Justine? What'd we all do last
year? I can't remember, but we had a blast)

Interesting - I looked at the analogue to this topic in V2 and it was a
lot more active a lot longer before the march...more was said and more
people expressed excitement...wonder what that means?

I heard on the radio this morning that reported gay-bashings have
tripled in the past year. Either more bashings are occurring, or those
suffering from bashings are reporting them - or both...

I take responsibility for the lack of activity on this topic, D! I
should have put a note in sooner, but time flew by me.

I hope that lots of womannoters will come to the March and Rally this
year. We really did have a good time last year. Look for the Digital
and Womannotes banners (we'll be standing near each other) at City
Hall Plaza around 10:30. If you burn (as I do), be sure to bring sun
block, and it's good to wear layers that you can peel off or put on
as the weather changes; it's a pretty long day if you start at 10:30,
march in the hot sun (let's hope anyway) and then go out for dinner
(maybe even dancing this year, who knows?:-) afterwards.

What I love about Pride is that for at least that one day, it feels like the
whole world is gay (or is willing to be identified as gay for the day)!
That's a nice feeling when most of the time you feel like you're the
    only one on the planet.

When I lived closer to the city, I used to love to take the T from
Harvard Square into Govt. Center. With each stop we'd pick up more and
more "family," and by the time we got to the last stop, it truly felt
    like we were everywhere!

    Yippee!!

Well, we didn't have too many womannoters there (if you were there
Herb, then we missed you) but we had a grand time anyway, rain and all.
There were a couple of dynamite marching bands, the marchers stretched
out for what seemed like forever (I thought I heard 20,000 as the
count...I thought our lot were at the end there were so many ahead of
us, but as I discovered later we were actually near the front!), the
cops seemed very relaxed, and there weren't any folks foaming at the
mouth from the sidelines (though there were leaflets urging a
non-violent response if any such should materialise). At the rally
afterward there were a couple of reasonable commedians onstage, and the
Boston Gay Men's Chorus would have sounded better if the sound system
hadn't gotten in the way. We all got sunburnt, had some terrific
empanadas from one of the stands (they couldn't have had too many peas
in, I only had a slight reaction), and got rained on without it
spoiling our good humor. A few of us were still alive afterward, so we
went off, had drinks in a thoroughly overcrowded, raucus, and happy bar
(I can't remember where), went someplace else for quite a decent
seafood dinner, and then went to a women's bar (lounge? club?) and got
our ears assaulted for awhile by what I think is called "rap music"(?)
(whatever it was, there didn't seem to be any noticeable relationship
between the music, which seemed all percussion, and the dancers). I
slept like a stone when I finally got home.

So when's Pride next year? :-)

Yeah, okay, 70,000 sounds more like it...didn't it feel almost like
    Washington in November?! :-)

We got there too late for the concert, there were only 30 minutes left
when we arrived so we decided to go sit on the floor downstairs :-)

So you coming up next year too, Robin? Maybe if we can get a notice in
here earlier [I'm ragging Justine] we can get the mob up to 75,000 :-)

It was a fun day. You'd think after all these years I've spent
in this fair skin I would know that I burn even on a cloudy day.
Oh well, it'll all peel off soon enough.

Maggie, we should definitely bring the Womannotes banner every year.
I felt so proud when all those women came up and asked about it!! And
I also felt proud that Digital was so well represented. Lots of folks
cheered when the Digital banners went by in the parade. Did anyone
see in any other companies officially represented?

For those of you who didn't get to the Pride March and Rally, there
is going to be a rally on the steps of the statehouse today at 5:30.
I believe the purpose is the make known our opposition to the
Pierce Legislation and to the efforts to repeal the recently passed
Gay Rights legislation. Evelyn Murphy is scheduled to address the
crowd -- This must have been scheduled before the recent attempt
    to "out" her.

> seafood dinner, and then went to a women's bar (lounge? club?) and got

Hmm, I *think* most of what was being played is what they call "house music."
Not sure, but most of it was definitely not rap music. But sheesh, it even
made *me* feel old!

So did anyone get accosted by the guy handing out pamphlets saying
"Homosexuality: is it a sin?". Hmph!

Herb, being at the march/rally would not have been a "defining" statement
about your sexual preference. There were a lot of straights there. And
I was told (never heard this before) that the pink triangle, when worn
point *up*, means you are straight but support gays. So you could mark
yourself so that other marchers would know you weren't gay; true, random
people wouldn't know the meaning, and they might think you are gay, but to
me, that's the point - they don't have to know and it is none of their
business.

Sunburns, blisters and a little rain notwithstanding, I had a great time. :-)

    don't card anyone.

This is probably a little late, but I, too, enjoyed the Pride
	March.

It was fabulous to see so many people there supporting something
that they believe in. It was wonderful to see a peaceful, uplifting
statement like that. I met so many wonderful people, and have
never felt so "welcomed" into a group like I was then.

It's a shame so many of the Digital people got separated as soon
as we got to the Common, I would have loved to meet some more of the
	group.

And as far as I know, the Digital banner was the only Corporate
banner there. And the cheers I heard from the bystanders made me
proud to be working for a company that is so valuing and
	supportive.
