| My daughter, Miranda Joy, won third prize over all for her public school
speech about Susan B. Anthony and first prize in the Nashua fourth grade
for her Earth Day poster.
I understand the June 6th or 8th Telegraph will have the speech winners
written up. So check out my kid!

| This is late, but this is a new topic. My daughter Amy, a 9th grader,
was part of the team that took 1st place in a competition at the Future
Homemaker's (I know, it's a sexist sounding name.) convention in North
Conway, N.H. Her group, 4 young women, presented a playlet with an
antidrug theme. Then they were questioned by the judges on their
understanding of what they presented. All it took was one question and
they had it sewn up. Congrats to the Elm Street Junior High, Nashua
contingent.

| Hey, Dan, betcha can't wait too much longer.
My youngest (Heather, 14), had two drawings in an art show in
Nashua.
She must get her artistry from her Uncle Thaddeus, who happened
to be one of the best 200 young artists in Ohio in the late 70s.

171.7 | Timothy David Smith! brother! | CADSYS::PSMITH | foop-shootin', flip city! | Fri Jun 01 1990 11:32 | 15 |
| My brother Tim works for the navy in Virginia as an aerospace engineer.
He donated his time to working with a group of high school physics
students and they worked in teams to produce human-powered hydroplane
vehicles (the article said they were the first ever). They had a race,
with all these bicycle-powered contraptions flying along a foot above
the ground! Tim provided theories and support and guidance, and the
kids came up with their own designs and built them.
It was written up in the Washington Post (and Tim was given far too
much credit for his theories in the writeup and got razzed by friends
at work for it!).
I'm so proud.

| My mom just got her black belt. Good thing she didn't have it when I
was growing up. Apparently, the kids at the high school she teaches
at know and she gets a little more respect.
My sister's baby Gain Robinson, just turned six months and I get to
see him this weekend. I haven't seen him since he was two months (and
before that two days old).

171.9 | (-: OK, I give up, I can't wait any longer... YAYYY, Jodie!! :-) | RANGER::KALIKOW | DEC LanWORKS/Mac: VAX to the MAX!! | Sat Jun 02 1990 16:32 | 28 |
| Debby's and my daughter, Jodie, will graduate Harvard/Radcliffe next
Thursday, and will be getting her A.B. degree =>Summa Cum Laude<= in
Linguistics. Jodie was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist,
graduated with highest honors from our town's (Natick Mass.) public
schools, while working part-time through both high school and college,`
fulltime during the summers. She was consistently named an Elizabeth
Cary Agassiz Scholar at Harvard/Radcliffe (Group 1, top marks). She
wrote a first-rate Linguistics Honors Thesis during her Senior year,
while also pulling for her house's intramural crew (_vide_ =wn= 12.21),
and co-organizing this year's H/R Dance Marathon, which raised more
than $7K for many Boston-area charities last February. She's still
going steady with her HTH (HomeTown Honey) after "playing the field" a
bit at school. Next year, she's moving to San Francisco [parental :-(]
to take a linguistics-related high-tech job out in Silicon Valley.
She's really the "young woman who has 'most everything," because not
only is she brilliant, she's witty, personable, loving, optimistic,
capable, strong and beautiful, and great fun to be around.
We're SOOO proud of her and happy in our good fortune... And yep,
we've got ANOTHER one at home like that! Our younger daughter Mandy is
a "rising Sophomore" at Harvard... More about _her_ later... :-)
We wish the =wn= community similar joy with their families...
Cheers,
Dan & Deb

171.12 | A different slant... | DOOZER::VTX | Brian Patman | Tue Jun 05 1990 12:10 | 32 |
| Two achievements of a couple of my children which I found uplifting
and life-affirming:
A couple of weeks ago the Football Association (soccer) Cup Final
was played in the UK, between the teams Manchester United (the
favourites) and Crystal Palace.
Our nine year old son, Hal, who is a supporter of neither team and
who has only a passing interest in soccer, watched the match on
TV in his room.
Half an hour after the match had finished, my wife, Rebecca, and
I heard the sound of crying coming from Hal's room. We found him
lying face down on the floor, in tears.
I asked him what was wrong. He said, "Crystal Palace lost!"
"Why are you so upset?" I asked, "You're not a fan of theirs."
"I know," he sobbed, "but they were the underdogs!"
and now, Dan, especially for you:
I have a daughter whose
name is Olivia.
She is just seven weeks
into her life.
Her major milestone was
unceremonial.
Simply, last Friday, she
smiled at my wife.
Best wishes,
Brian

| I am particularly proud of my 18 year old daughter.
About 18 months ago she told me in no uncertain terms that she had
absolutely NO intention of going to college and that she was doing
only what she had to do to "get out of school". (Her grades were
proving her words to be true as well.)
Well here she is graduating from high school next week, has been
accepted to *four* colleges with a major in Elementary Education.
She WANTS this more than anything! She was even on the honor roll
during her senior year!
What an accomplishment and turn around she's made for herself.
Go for it Nicole! I'm backing you 200%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Carly [Ann Carlyle Arther aka. Annie-Luise Johnston-Carlyle's niece]
anyway ...
Carly, aged 4, called to wish her father a Happy Birthday the other day [and
then called me to tell me about it].
She's been working on this one over my mother's objections for about three
months.
It wasn't his birthday [it's in January, actually] and he's not one of my
favourite human beings [understatement of the century!]; BUT Carly was quite
correct in her conviction that she has the _right_ to wish her father happy.
I'm very proud of her.
