| I'm beta testing a tool to allow you to pre-screen a notesfile, marking
certain authors "seen" before reading. The tool is
VANITY""::SET_SEEN_AUTHOR.EXE
and usage is:
MC []SET_SEEN_AUTHOR SET_SEEN_AUTHOR Notebook_entry Author_name
Where "Author_name" can contain wild cards..
SET_SEEN_AUTHOR soap node::user
Will set all notes in entry "soap" written by auth "node::user" to Seen
status
SET_SEEN_AUTHOR soap node::*
Will set all notes in entry "soap" written by any author on node "node"
to Seen Status
SET_SEEN_AUTHOR soap *::*fred*
Will set all notes in entry "soap" written by an author whose
name contains the string "fred"
This tool is still being developed, so there are still rough edges, but
it seemed to me there was a critical need. Bug repots etc. should go in

> Hey Charles, how about using Enotes?
> ENOTES>extract/unseen/seen/out=nl:/auth=Author_name Notebook_entry
A few points..
(1) "extract".. this means that you will have to 'read' each note that
you want to ignore.. so even though its not going to appear on your
screen you will still have to wait while you 'read' a note
(so if an author on your 'hit list' has entered a 5,000 line note
your "extract" command will have to 'read' each and every line!)
(the set_seen_author just does a "directory/Unseen" and scans
for author names)
(2) "/auth=Author_name" you can only give one author name.. no
wild cards.. no list of authors.. so if you have multiple
authors on your 'hit list' you will have to do the "extract"
multiple times

If you're interested in resisting the exploitation of women by the
media, you might want to spend $15 p.a. for membership in Challenging
Media Images of Women, a Cambridge (Mass) -based feminist group who put
out a quarterly newsletter by the same name.
Articles from the summer issue: "Skin-Bleaching Products" (about the
combined racism and sexism that drives these products); "Misogyny in
Film: _Tie_Me_Up,_Tie_Me_Down"; "The Secret Life of the American Wife"
(about the Esquire mag article of the same name); "Branding Women to
Sell Gin"; "Television's Attack on Women and Girls"; "Cosmopolitan's
[magazine] Perpetuation of Sexism". They give names in the responsible
organisations so that anyone moved to write or phone can focus on the
right person/people.
As they support a sliding scale, they're quite grateful for any extra
money from those who can afford more than the standard $15.

26.11 | for career and work life advice | TLE::RANDALL | self-defined person | Thu Oct 25 1990 13:28 | 14 |
| I've just discovered a magazine called _Working_Woman_.
I had seen it around in stores, but had always assumed it was just
another diet-and-beauty-tips magazine, but it's more than that.
It's full of to-the-point advice and information about developing
one's career.
It would be more accurate to title it _Executive_Woman_; it's
definitely not for the more everyday kind of worker. And it won't
be on target for everybody. But if you're serious about your
career, or interested in starting one (which is how I happened to
pick it up), you might want to take a look.

I'm cleaning and came across a great catalog. This is a for women by
women company and they sell practical, attractive clothing made from
natural fabrics. (This appears to be cotton, but I've got the
spring/summer catalog.)
Travis Place, Inc.
PO Box 30005
Durham, NC 27702-3005
919-682-3010
Table of contents lists: lace camisoles; skirts; canvas carrying bag;
V-neck t's; Earth Gear in XXX; jumpers; cotton bras; "Ask Muslinda"
feature; sport bras; cotton swimsuits; tops and shorts; slips, garter
belts and camis; underpants, unitard; sweatsuits, leggings; T-tops;
socks and tights; wandering futons; nightwear; GROWcery (tm) bags.
I've not yet ordered anything from this catalog, but I think I will
this year if I can think of a good reason to spend yet more money on
clothing. The models in this catalog are great looking "regular" women!
If you're looking for a no-nonsense standard bathing suit, they offer
three. The two piece has a hip-hugger style bottom. Bra styles have
funny names: Chestimonial, Jiggle-low, Model-T, Lifts and Celebrates,
No Fallout, Bolder Holder, Little Dipper, Glorius Firmament. The
nursing bra is called...of course, the Milky Way.

It isn't necessary for you to get a tape. I just wanna know, being the

made a bit of nuisance of myself about this and you have been very kind

Now, I also have 2 more copies of the book Choices. As I have stated
before, this was a benefit book done by cartoonist and comic artists

Many moving and many humorous cartoons that all deal with abortion
activities. These are available to the 1st 2 people to send me mail at

26.23 | RTC sale of New England homes at auction | TOMK::KRUPINSKI | C, where it started. | Thu Jun 06 1991 13:06 | 27 |
| Didn't know of a better place to put this...
The Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) was established to resolve
over 400 insolvent Savings and Loan institutions, and to dispose
of their assets. The RTC is selling, at auction, a number of
properties in New England on June 21, 22, 23, and 24.
Many of the properties will be sold at absolute auction (no
minimum bid), and for many properties, bidding will be restricted
to those who qualify under HUD's "Affordable Housing" guidelines.
The RTC has set aside over $250 Million in financing assistance.
Closing cost assistance is available to eligible low-to-moderate
income buyers who qualify.
This represents a great opportunity for low to moderate income
families to purchase a home.
The auction hotline is 1-800-437-9989. If you are interested, call
them and ask for information. I have at my office in ZKO a brochure
that describes the program, and lists the properties for sale, and
would be happy to let anyone have a look at it - ZKO1-3/I21.

Since we want to have an absolute minimum of crossposting (when we
post to m.a.p.; so far none) we want people to be aware of this
resource. Hence this start-up mass-crosspost.
[Thus for example when we post extensive documentation from GAN
(Global Action Network) about Pesticides, Nuclear Waste, etc, we'd
rather not crosspost everything to talk.environment, etc, but we do
encourage, in this case and other cases, people to cross post the
*relevant excerpts* (w/pointer to full original article) when the
given topic comes up in discussions in other groups]

contact me if you can help us in this regard, especially if you are a

"Last year our country spent $640 billion on health care. With a

$365 billion." [_In Health_ article excerpted]
"Although the U.S. ranks 2nd in the world in per capita gross national

and 29th in low birth-weight babies. Our child poverty rate is higher

-- The myth of "spending too much on social programs" (or that
we need to raise taxes to get more and better programs funding
human needs)
--More on Bush's Gulf War...including Chomksy's post-war
teach-in in Z magazine; a tiny excerpt follows:
It is a very revealing fact that the Iraqi democratic opposition
was not only ignored by Washington but also scrupulously excluded
from the media, throughout the Gulf crisis. That is easily
explained when we hear what they had to say.
On the eve of the air war, the German press published a statement
of the "Iraqi Democratic Group," conservative in orientation
("liberal," in the European sense), reiterating its call for the
overthrow of Saddam Hussein but also opposing "any foreign
intervention in the Near East," criticizing US "policies of
aggression"
[...(more documentation)...]
A delegation of the Kuwaiti democratic opposition in Amman in
December took the same position, opposing any Western assault
against Iraq. On British television, anti-Saddam Arab
intellectuals in London, including the prominent Kuwaiti
opposition leader Dr. Ahmed al-Khatib, were unanimous in calling
for a cease-fire and for serious consideration of Saddam's
February 15 peace offer
[...(more documentation)...]
The silence here was deafening, and most instructive. Unlike
Bush and his associates, the peace movement and Iraqi democratic
opposition had always opposed Saddam Hussein. But they also
opposed the quick resort to violence to undercut a peaceful
resolution of the conflict. Such an outcome would have avoided
the slaughter of tens of thousands of people, the destruction of
two countries, harsh reprisals, an environmental catastrophe,
further slaughter by the Iraqi government and the likely
emergence of another murderous US-backed tyranny there. But it
would not have taught the crucial lessons[*], already reviewed.

Since I opened my mouth, I'll post the information.
For anyone in the Denver area looking for a good GYN/OB:
I have had excellent experiences with the Denver Women's clinic. There
are two female doctors, and one male... all are very caring,
compassionate, supportive, professional, etc. They're in the phone book.
My experience has been basic run of the mill gyn/ob, but I have two close
friends who have used this clinic for infertility problems as well.

Although many people have access to computer resources required
to gather these reports, few have the time to find them among
thousands of lesser value. We would like to make them available
to everyone, including those without Usenet access. To receive
our title index, and an article or group of articles, send
electronic mail having the subject line, `INFO REQUEST' followed
by a description of what you'd like to WPIRG's email address,
given below. Alternatively, send your request to our regular or
inter-campus mail address, stating floppy disk size (3 1/2" or 5
1/4") and capacity (low or high density). Include with any
floppy disk request your return address and a $4 cheque (covering
postage, floppy mailer and disk cost) made payable to WPIRG. We
regret not being able to send printed reports due to the high
cost of paper and postage and that only IBM format disks are
available because of limited resources. Please contact us at
either of the following addresses:

*****************************************
The Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (PYM) of the Society of Friends
(Quakers), in coordination with the American Friends Service
Committee (AFSC), has undertaken a project of aid to Middle East
children and families. Under AFSC auspices, a representative of
PYM has traveled to Iraq to assess the needs of the population,
and to identify specific needs that can be met through AFSC
material aid or development assistance. Any funds or materials
that Project *Waging Peace* collects will be channeled through
existing agencies such as AFSC, the Middle East Council of
Churches, the International Red Cross/Red Crescent.
To respond to the immediate emergency, the AFSC has provided
personal hygiene kits for refugees, oral rehydration packets for
dehydrated children, and has arranged for shipment of much needed
agricultural equipment to salvage the harvest in Iraq. Longer
term projects will be chosen to enable the people of Iraq to help
themselves and avoid dependency. A corollary goal of the project
is to provide opportunities for both spiritual and social
witness, to give material and educational aid, and to increase
the body of information on which we act.
One means to that end will be the preparation of video and audio
tapes for fund raising and education. A 30-second spot will be
scheduled for public and local television public service
announcements. Longer versions will be available for schools,
meetings and other public gatherings as well as for fund raising
presentations.
Project *Waging Peace* is intended, above all, to break down
stereotypes, to get to know Iraqis as neighbors so as to take
away the occasion for war.
If your group would like to coordinate on Project *Waging Peace*,
please contact David Shen at (215)662-5270.
