4.1one human being to another...DEMING::GARDNERjustme....jacquiFri Apr 20 1990 14:0326

Hi,

I am a Human Being on this Planet Earth. As part of that experience
I have been involved with Digital off and on since 1980 in several
capacities. The first was as a Special TAG (Temporary Assignment
Group), the second as a Contractor (Temp Agency), and now third as
a Permanent Employee. I must say that I now find the third grouping
the most benefical to my future endeavors.

I have written in all three versions of -wn- and have gotten to meet
many different individuals personally at our gatherings through the
years.

I have been justme....jacqui in all versions and will continue to be
justme....jacqui once again. justme (nothing else, don't try to mold/
change me)....jacqui (that's *my* name). I find that people have had
problems with thinking that I have put myself down by using this handle
in my communications. It is a very strong statement made in what is
supposed to be a non-threatening manner. Learning to be myself and not
let others control my being has been and is an on-going task in my life.

So, on with the business of living life.

justme....jacqui

I waffled over whether to write in this topic then decided "what the
heck"! I'm a person as well as a woman and that's a big point of the
women's movement for me.

I'm 40 years old (but I just don't *feel* that old!) and have been
separated from my husband of 15 years for two years. I've filled out
all the papers but just can't seem to actually go ahead and initiate the
divorce and so far he hasn't either. Typical of our life together.

My mom has lived with me since she had a stroke and then cancer surgery
a little over a year ago. I also share my home with 2 dogs (a dalmation
and an American Eskimo) and a 17 year old cat named Sylvester. This
isn't exactly how I thought my life would turn out but you learn to go
with the flow and make the best of it.

I've just sold the horse I spent 4 years training and got a new 3 year
old to start again. I'll be using her for dressage and lots of trail
riding. I live in Colorado Springs and this is a fabulous state for
trail riding. I have moutains, plains and forests. My weekend life
seems completely disconnected from my work life, all those whips and
high leather boots. ;*}

I'm currently a programmer but do all sorts of technical and political
bits and pieces. I like jobs that have a wide varitey and would hate it
if all I did was what the job description outlined. The classic
generalist.

In a past life I worked for 7 years in hosptials in x-ray and radiation
therapy but most of my time was spent in the ER. I'm also a musician
and play the french horn. My musical tastes run from Verdi opera's to
Delta Blues and a lot in between. I've lived on a ranch, been a
housewife and hippy, and have hitch-hiked over a good portion of the
USA. I'm a senior at UCCS but still have over 40 credits to go before
graduation as a Communications major. I've had a bad habit of taking
classes that interest me rather than what the school requires.

Guess that's more than enough for now. liesl

Currently on my third job, third country with Digital - but only my
second version of womannotes.

Looking forward to sharing this conference with the many people who can
disagree without being disagreeable.

Mostly read-only, I enjoy this conference for the higher percentage
of positive thoughts (compared to some conferences), and the learning
I receive.

I work in Maynard in the Mill, have been with Digital since 1963,
except for three years. Currently involved in a program (Computing
Access for People with Disabilities -- CAPD) another great learning
experience.

I've been married to Gloria since 1957 -- we have three grown children
and two grandchildren.

When not at work, I enjoy sculpture, reading and hammocking.

4.6Hi all......GMC4X4::BRIGGSRebel without a ....station wagn..yeahTue Jun 26 1990 13:0819
Will be mostly read only for a while yet, still have over 5000
notes to read to get caught up. Saw a pointer to this notesfile
in one of the other notefiles I read and felt I could gain from
the discussions and information and even possibly offer some of
my own insight.
I have very strong opinions and phylosophies that I live by,
one of which is that these opinions and phylosophies can't be
cast in concrete, but, I am the one that decides how and when they
change. One other that is important to me is the belief that
everyone has the right to their opinions whether I agree or disagree.
I may not always agree with or appreciate your opinions, but I will
always try to "hear" them.
Some of my most important interests are, (first and foremost)
my Family, fishing, skiing (snow), and of course 4_wheelin' (could
you guess from my node and personal name?).

Since I'll be at the upcoming party, I suppose I oughta provide a
little background knowledge.

As far as work goes, I'm in TSG (Technical Systems Group - part of New
Ventures) in MRO. We do a little of everything (our unofficial motto:
"We do good things for money"), mostly software engineering with a
little hardware engineering thrown in for variety. All of which fits
my preferences pretty well - in the 1 years I've been at Digital, I've
been on three different projects in three completely different areas.

Currently, (for those who care) I'm working with some subset of the ESG
systems engineering people (don't ask me, I think they reorganize
weekly to keep me guessing) on a release tool to transport information
between PowerFrame workspaces and EDCS.

Physically, I'm of what you might call medium stature (how's that for
non-specific), with red hair and freckles. Personally, I tend towards
occaisional (ok, maybe not so occaisional) fits of silliness
interspersed with bad jokes. I'm interested in all kinds of "stuff"
and as a result, I've picked up a lot of obscure knowledge that's
sometimes even useful.

Anyway, I'm mostly read-only here, 'cause I don't usually have the time
to compose a reply that gets across what I want to say the way I want
to say it. (although it could have something to do with the fact that I
try to follow more notesfiles than I really have time for) I will jump
in from time to time when I have something to add, though.

Oh yeah, my name is Andy Lee, but I'll usually sign my notes as...

4.9 another human signs in...SAGE::SZKLARZCan't you hear? My silence screams!Wed Aug 29 1990 15:4331

Signing in after a gentle reminder...

A product of middle class America, and a suburbanite at heart, my theories
and feelings on many of the topics are often not that of the *stated*
norm. And while I have always respected "differences of opinions", too
often I have been intent on "changing" the other person's way of thinking,
trying to get them to "think" like me.

=wn= has taught me that respecting a person's right to a different
opinion isn't always enough. That while I may not understand another's
thoughts/feelings/reactions, I must accept them as their truths.
And while I may strive to know why/what makes them feel as the do, I must
be careful to learn to deal with it and not always to try and change it,
because sometimes there is *no reason*, it just is!

My entries will be few and generally only in *lite* topics as I "bruise"
easily and am often tongue-tied when I speak, let alone when I write!

One of my favorite philosophies:
"And it's still true, no matter how old you are - when you go out
in to the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together."

I vowed to introduce myself after I got a 0 unseen count, well after 4
months I finally caught up. Not an easy thing to do!

Anyway, my name is Janet, been married 4 years to Brian and we have one
beautiful 2 year old daughter named Brittany. We also gave birth to a
beautiful boy named Brian Richard. He would be 4 years old now. (He
died of SIDS at three months).

What counts as spare time I spend reading, crewel/needlework, and making
beaded earings. I'm obviously a read-only noter, but now that I've
ventured forth once I may do so again.

4.12A USUALLY "READ/ONLY" NOTER TRYING TO CHANGE!ASIC::WELCHSun Nov 11 1990 09:3230
I think it's time to become introduced. Having just "met" Bonnie
Reinke the end of this past week, it seemed time to get into this
conference and see what it's all about. So, here I am....Mostly a
read/only noter, so far, but who knows. Maybe I'll get unshy one of
these days.

I am a widow, for a bit over three years, 54 years old, have one grown
daughter who has given me three marvelous grandchildren and I live by
myself in the town of Norfolk. Where is Norfolk, you say? Not in
Virginia.......It is the next town East of Franklin which is where I
work for DEC as a Secretary in the ASIC Center (soon to be renamed and
reorganized). I worked in Marlboro for GIA for 3 years, commuting the
52 mile round trip everyday, and in May finally transferred to
FXO......Hallelujah! A 10 minute drive certainly is nice.

I've been with DEC 7 years in January and have only a few times
regretted joining the Company......Mostly I'm glad to be here.

I have three wonderful cats who allow me to share their apartment with
them.......Pookah ( slightly slow but the most lovable of them all),
Pywacket (shades of Bell, Book and Candle....and, no, I don't look like
Kim Nova.....sigh......) and lastly, Pebbles who is my little crippled
baby. She was born with four legs, but only three feet. Don't feel
sorry for her.....She rules the roost around here.....

I'm getting long winded.......I'll try to become less read/only from
now on.......And, definitely going to try to be at the 5th anniversy
part next June.....

4.13Hi! from N.J.SADVS1::HIDALGOTue Nov 13 1990 18:0622
Greetings,

I've been reading this file (actually V2) since November of 88
when I was hired as the Lead Oper for KYOA cluster in Piscataway,
New Jersey. I've recently begun writing as well.

When I began doing operations work in 84-85, I decided that one of
these days, I'd run a computer room for Digital. And so I have,
first as a Lead Oper, then as a Spec I (February 90). I LOVED IT!!!
It was wonderful.

As of June, I've moved over into Sales Support (Spec II) and although
it was REALLY DIFFERENT and I hated it at first (I missed my "toys"
and KNOWING what to do), I'm having fun with it now and it's just as
much fun explaining things to customers as it was to explain things
to users.

It's really good to see so many different points of view and hear the
stories behind the viewpoints.

I just wanted to update my e-mail address. It is, as can clearly be
seen above, GAZERS::NOONAN.

what did she say?

she has a last name?

*I* thought her last name was Yukonsec!

what kind of name *is* Yukonsec, anyway?

U.S. Customer Services Communications
Presently at WFR - Westboro, MA; soon to be at MRO3 - Marlboro, MA

I became involved in "AIDS stuff" about 3 years ago when I was the
"Customer/Employee Relations" person at the CSC/MA. That was when I
realized how ignorant I was. Since then, I've lost a lot of friends
- one who was closer than my own brother; had a lot of HIV+ friends;
volunteered at AIDS ACTION Committee in Boston; raised money and walked
in Boston and New York City; worked on a corporate AIDS education
program for DEC as part of the Corporate AIDS Program Managers Task
Force; and was chairperson of last year's From All Walks Of Life
employee committee for DEC.

Since I expect to confine my replies to "AIDS stuff," I guess that's
all the 'credentials' required.

I am delighted that -d has agreed to do the honor of introducing me in
this notes conference.

Mac

This part of this reply is being written by -d, whom most of you know
already. Mac McBride had what I think was a clever idea, and asked me,
as a friend and colleague, to provide an introduction. So here it is.

Mac works in Bellevue, Washington, USA, in OSPTG - that's the Open
Software Publications Tools Group. I'm a customer and a co-developer
for their tools, and we met when we began working together on the
tools for producing Bookreader versions of ULTRIX documentation.

Mac's easy to get along with, but watch out - there's a pretty darn
sharp wit, and the social consciousness to go with it, hiding behind
that innocent face. :-)

Anyway, Mac, welcome to Womannotes. Fellow =wn= people, here's Mac.

In my Digital life, I'm a tech writer ordinaire. Presently heavy into
the UNIX(R) end of things, and willing to assist newcomers to that
arcane way of doing things.

When not buried under a workstation, I like music, mostly but not only
classical. I'm the music critic for a major metropolitan newspaper.
(Well, I can dream, can't I?) I also read most anything with words in
a row.

Working on restructuring a life in which I managed to cause much
unhappiness to others. Learning more about people, especially women,
can't hurt...

As indicated by the title of this reply, I prefer to use, and to be
addressed or referred to, as -d in Notes rather than using my given
name.

Nancy Teasdale, Quality Engineer in semiconductor mfg at HLO.
Been here for 3 years since graduating from WPI with a BS Physics, no
small feat at the age of 30.

Cranky a good deal of the time, with a great big joy bubble underneath.
I have infinite patience for immediate situations, but no patience for
human behavior. Always need some art in my life, preferably theater
or photography.

Live in the boonies of northeast CT with husband, son and two cats,
which seems to suit us even tho hubby is a die-hard NYC native. We
prefer the seclusion of 13 acres but we'd like the amenities of art and
good restaurants.

Have had several itchy episodes with =wn= but I have come to love this
community. Really missed not going to the 5 Yr Ann party, so I hope to
meet y'all some other time.

Lately I'm signing my name
N
or
Nancy
reactionary_at_large
in recognition of my very strong feelings for women's/human's issues.

Hope to continue to learn from the women and men of the =wn= community.
