25.1 | Women And Mathematics | ULTRA::ZURKO | It's a question of temperature. | Fri Apr 20 1990 10:54 | 108 |
| From off the net:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last month I sent the following letter to all the members of Women
And Mathematics, a sparse national organization of speakers who
visit secondary schools to encourage the students to take more math
and to demonstrate (especially to the girls) that women can succeed
in technical careers.
So far I've received about a dozen problems for the book - they are
fantastic, but obviously I need to collect more. There is no need
to limit the contributors to the WAM membership. I hope some of the
female femail readers can find time to contribute, especially those
working for industry.
If you would like more information about WAM (maybe you'd like to
be a speaker next year), send me mail.
Marla Parker (415) 336-2538
[email protected]
Dear WAM Speaker,
Women And Mathematics is writing a book of math and logic problems
collected from the careers of our speakers. I would like to
interest you in contributing to it.
Since there are only fifteen WAM regions nationally, this book is
intended to reach teenage students who would not otherwise hear
anything from WAM. All of the problems should be written by WAM
speakers or our female friends and colleagues, and each problem will
be accompanied by a brief professional biography and job description
for the author.
Alice Kelly, national director of WAM, is very enthusiastic about
this project. She says that including the mini-biographies with the
problems will make the book useful not only as a supplementary math
workbook but also as a career guide. This will emphasize the fact
that a solid math background is extremely useful to many highly
rewarding technical careers.
One publisher has already expressed an interest in this book. The
"author" of this book will be Women And Mathematics. If the book is
actually profitable, the money raised could be used to start new WAM
regions in some of the many states currently not covered.
Before there can be a book, though, I need to collect the problems.
I have enclosed directions for contributing to WAM's book. Would
you please take some time to write at least one problem for this
book and send it to me within the next four to six weeks?
The more problems and career histories that we collect, the broader
the scope of the book will be.
Sincerely,
Marla Parker

Directions for Contributing to WAM's Book
-----------------------------------------
Student Audience
----------------
The book will contain a wide variety of problems at various levels
of difficulty, so that even remedial or advanced students in grades
7-12 will be able to find a problem that is not too hard and/or a
problem that is a real challenge. Like a college text, all the
problems' answers will be in the book.
Problem Format
--------------
It will be easiest for the women who will review and edit the
problems if they are typed or printed on 8 1/2" x 11" sheets.
Diagrams can be drawn by hand. Include background information
needed by your problem(s), if any, along with their solutions and
explanations.
Career History
--------------
A young person's understanding of the job world is usually limited
to the occupations of his or her parents and parents' friends.
Besides making the book more interesting, each career history will
give the students a glimpse of a new profession. When you send in a
problem, please provide the following information as well.
NAME: as you would have it appear in the book
FIELD: What kind of engineer or what science or other field are you in?
CAREER: Describe your education, including how much math you took in
high school, and how or why you ended up in your current field and
job position. A brief list of the jobs and companies where you have
worked (in your field) could be useful.
Questions and Suggestions Most Welcome

25.6 | The inside dope on ORACLE Corp. & environs, for a new hire? | RANGER::KALIKOW | Nature abhors a VAXuum; DEC too! | Wed May 02 1990 23:10 | 28 |
| Dear =wn=ers -- My elder daughter just accepted her first job out of
college at Oracle Corporation, Redwood City, CA. (See VISA::JOYOFLEX
675.5 for a precis of what she'll be doing.) She and the rest of the
family would be grateful for any EMail (NOT posted here, tyvm:-)
information on the following points:
* What do you know about Oracle as a place to work? Their corporate
culture, your friends that work there, etc.? People to avoid, possible
mentors? Friendly contacts?
* What of their product line?
* Where are the good places to live in the Redwood City area, places to
avoid, etc.? She plans to live in SF proper and commute to Oracle.
Best places in SF that are comfortably commutable?
* Fun things to do/see in SF area (no chamber of commerce stuff, what
are YOUR personal faves?)
* Should she buy a car here in MA and have it shipped to CA (covered as
part of relocation pkg) or buy it out there?
* Anything else *you* would tell a young woman starting out in hi-tech?
* Suggestions for other notesfile(s) wherein to post these questions --
no SoapBox, tyvm:-)
Thanks in advance -- Dan, for Jodie '90

| I think I'm going insane :-) Sometime recently, in some notesfile, I
read a brief article that someone had posted from usenet regarding the
un-safeness of using Skin So Soft as a bug repellent, especially for
children.
Anyone remember seeing this recently that could point me to it?
Thanks very much,

| I don't recall seeing the note, Lynn, but there has been considerable
discussion of late regarding the R11 ingredient in many bug repellants.
Because it is about to be dropped due to a [FDA?] ruling, the DEPP
ingredient will become less potent. The concern is that parents will
turn to repellants with greater DEPP concentrations, which can cause
neural damage in small children when used with regularity over large
portions of the body. The recommendation is to stick to repellants
with lower (certainly less than 50%) concentrations of DEPP, and to
simply use clothing and netting for infants and toddlers.... no
repellants at all.
I'll try to remember to check the ingredients on my SSS at home.

Well, while I was enjoying myself at the Inner Visions party
seeing friends and making new ones, my family was in a crisis.
My father was just laid off from Martin Marietta. Unlike DEC,
Martin gave him 4 weeks pay and a walk to the door. (This is
his second layoff, he was laid off by Boeing in '69). They
currently live near Denver but would be willing to relocate to
just about anywhere (he's 53 and still has one 15 yr old at home,
can't retire early).
If anyone knows of any companies looking for Electronic Engrs
with emphasis in communications/RF/satellite/defense please
let me know (he does have 18 yrs experience working with the
Dept of Defense).
Thanks. Any leads would be appreciated.

| I am currently working on a masters thesis that is examining the applicability
of current CASE technology for real-time software systems development. To
obtain primary data for the thesis, I am conducting a survey using a
questionnaire.
I'm having a real tough time getting people to respond. I've posted it in
several technical notes files, but the response has been very disappointing.
With MEZ's permission, I'm posting a copy of the questionnaire here in desparate
hope that the wide readership of Woman Notes will include individuals who are
using CASE tools to develop real-time software systems.
A copy of the survey follows the form feed.
Thanks in advance.

| I just found out that my optometrist has moved to the other side of the
country, and I need a new one. His replacement is someone I have seen
in the past, and don't feel is adequate for my needs. (Yes, please, an
optometrist, not an opthamologist.) I wear contact lenses and the
prescription is tricky, as one eye is heavily dominant over the other
and the prescription is part of the prevention of having the
non-dominant eye cross. I live in Medway, MA and work in Westboro, but
have a pretty wide geography that I'd consider.
Replies by mail, many thanks.

| Speaking of recycling newspapers, I would like to do this myself, but
the problem is that many places (King Soopers, for example) want you to
put the papers in grocery bags. But I prefer to shop with a canvas
bag, because that is more environmentally sound than accepting
groceries in either paper or plastic bags. So it seems like I am
caught in a catch-22 situation. Does anyone have any ideas?

| I asked at our recycling place about not using bags to hold the
paper and they said that most people didn't tie the papers tightly
enough, or with strong enough twine, so the papers didn't stay
tied. If you know what you're doing and tie them well, most places
will accept that. Keep the bundles about the size of a grocery bag
to make packing easier.

| The rules depend on the vendor(?) who ends up recycling the newspaper.
I'm on the recycling committee for my town, and when we
take bids from vendors, we take their preparation requirements
into consideration in addition to the money figures.
I pick up the newspapers at a couple of housing complexes each
month, and I have to remove the string that some of the tenants
use to keep their newspapers together. In that case, we just stack
the loose papers.

to people in the accounting field for advice, market exposure and,
perhaps the names of a few people she could call to expand her network
of contacts. She will not be asking them for a job, just a little time

She would either meet them or talk to them on the phone. As we live in

I would like it to be in the Wells, Ogunquit, York area, or

I'm looking for a small house, or condo, near the beach (but do not

would be fine.
I have a very well behaved dog who I want to bring so the place must
allow pets (I'm willing to give you a deposit against damage if

we have a wmn's group here at greenville who are trying to put together a
series of seminars similar to the hudson's "women at work" series.
given the current cost cutting measures corporate wide, we are desperately
trying to develop this series around internal speakers as opposed to the
higher cost of external speakers.
part of our problem lies in being a remote site. we feel very unaware of
the internal resources that may be available to us for this series of
seminars.
if you are aware of DEC women who would qualify as a dynamic, engaging
speaker, please send me mail at RAVEN1::AAGESEN. we are still in the
developing stages of our program, so the specific topics are not chiselled
in cement, yet. our focus has been mostly on defining topics that all
site employees would find interesting, yet have a definite slant towards
interest to women.
thanks for any help you may have to offer our group in this search!

Good morning..
I'm looking for a lead on a woman who makes what I guess could be called
"Goddess-inspired" jewelry. So far I've seen two pieces, which I'll
describe here, but I believe there is a whole catalogue available. I
also believe that the artist's name may be Gail but I'm not positive.
The two pieces I've seen are a necklace and a ring. The necklace is in
silver, and is a woman with her arms stretched above her head, and her
hands are holding a round amethyst stone. The ring is silver as well,
and I think the same woman-shape, but the stone at the top of the ring
is a moonstone.
I can be reached at terapn::phyllis or hocus::koyner.

| (I checked this with my on-site mod :-)
I need to do a you-should-pardon-the-expression straight swap of three (3)
Canobie Lake tickets. Mine will be for Sunday, Sept. 22nd. I'd like
them for Saturday, Sept 21st, although I'll consider Saturday,
Sept 29th.
Any takers?
Thanks,
Bobbi

I don't know about out there, but the west coast has a company
called starving students. Basically college kids that need money
and are willing to work hard for it.
Check your phone book for them.

| A while back the CXO women's distribution list send out an article talking
about how discrimination and predjudice were visibily controlled by at least
one person making a comment outloud about it being unacceptable. I'd like to
use this in a class I'm taking. If anyone still has it could they please mail
it to me at TINCUP::KOLBE?

Does anyone have a phonebook handy for NYC? I want to send flowers
to a friend in NYC, and I think it will be cheaper if I call a florist
there - rather than wiring them from here (Boston).
Thanks!
Justine
ps What I'm looking for is a florist on or near W. 43d Street
