when you change diapers there is a definite difference between boys

just so.. in fact our 3 week old boy has 'caught you by surprise'

nappy (diaper) changing is now a double act in our
house ... one changes him (either of us.. even I can change
him !).. and the other stands by with a pad of cotton wool

| Reminds me of the time I took Becky in for her 6 week check up, I had
to undress her totally to be weighed, and after wards, I turned to the
nurse and said "Is it okay to put a diaper back on her now?", she
chuckled and said "If it was a boy, you wouldn't be asking".. I had NO
idea what she meant!... It wasn't until maybe 10 years later, when I
watched a friend diaper her newborn boy, that I discovered what the
nurse actually was talking about!...

We worked out a technique that was quite successful when our oldest
was a baby. As soon as you open up the wet or soiled diaper, lay
a dry daiper across the baby boy's groin area.

| Either you all or I have peculiar boys. I had this happen only once in
six years of diapers for two kids. Anyhow, isn't the likelyhood of
this phenomenon (per unit-undiapered-time) sex neutral, with only the
direction of expression being notable for boys?

Like I said, only once - right in the nose.
And the "only once" wasn't due to any special precautions. With my
boys, at least, this was a really negligable hazard compared, say, with
spitting up.

| The only time Ryan ever "caught me" with a diaper off was during
his first in-office visit to the pediatrician - the doctor and
I *both* got sprayed... ;^)
The fire-hose effect is amazing...!
When he was older, though, the funniest thing about changing him
was the automatic way he would flip over and try to RUN AWAY as
soon as the diaper was removed.
I learned to grab hold of an ankle at the moment before I took
the diaper off. After he flipped over and tried to run away,
I would replace the old diaper with a new one (while still
retaining a good grasp on his ankle.)
Then, I would gently flip him back over onto the new diaper (and
would clean him while he struggled to flip over and run away again.)
As soon as the new diaper was fastened, he would stop struggling
(and we would both get up and go about our regular business.)
It was just a game he liked to play at diaper-time (and he would
laugh wickedly the whole time.) ;^)
Ahh, memories...

| Kai managed to spray the nurse who was trying to take his vital signs -
about 1/2 hour after he was born... :-) boy was HE surprised (so was I)!
I've already changed quite a few of Kai's diapers - some at 2am. It's
no big deal - even the dirty ones aren't bad since he's breastfeeding
(that was certainly a pleasant surprise - a bonus side effect of
breastfeeding!) I've also had to change shirts at least once after he
missed the burp rag and got me.
Diana you just don't know what you're missing! I wouldn't trade the dirty
diapers, the 2am feedings, the spitups for anything. Wierd huh? I probably
wouldn't be so sanguine if there weren't compensating advantages...
OBTW - I've gotten "soaked" by little girls too...

and in re spitting up...
my second son was a champ at that...threw up all over the social

and got his father and I many times.. once when he was riding on
his dads shoulders he threw up all over his head!

My son never spit up as a baby - he burped pretty loud, but never
spit anything up.
When he got older, though (well past the baby stage) - he seemed
to be able to throw up without much of a reason.
Such a nice kid, though - when he started feeling sick, he would
walk PAST the bathroom to where *I* was, to let me know before it
happened. (That way, I wouldn't have far to go when it came to
cleaning up, I guess.) ;^)
It sounds awful, but even sick kids are pretty lovable...

Evan was not much of a problem with squirting. However, recently he was

He was so surprised that he immediately jumped up and yelled, "Diaper!"

some potty chairs have shields on them, but we found that having
our sons sit backwards on the chair or toilet, or teaching them
to hold their penis down as they urinated prevented accidents.

| Our potty had a removable pee shield, too. But I remember reading
somewhere (probably Penelope) about the risk of an uncomfortable
accident that would be quite off-putting toward the further happy use
of the potty. So ours didn't get used, which really was no problem.
But hey, what's going on here? This isn't =Parenting=!
