1021.0. "Wedding Dance with Father" by SCOLOX::GLIDDEN () Mon Mar 12 1990 13:39

    	I'm getting married in less than 3 weeks and everything
    	is in place - except for a song selection for the dance
    	with my father!

    	I don't like the Daddy's Little Girl song. Can you please
    	make some suggestions??? Maybe tell me what you married
    	women danced to with your dads?

    	I truly appreciate any suggestions!!! Thanks very much.

Gosh, I can't remember! But we had a classical quartet; it mostly played songs
I didn't know. Can they do a waltz?

How about a polka? Or some other dance that celebrates your ethnic/genetic
heritage?

1021.2Sentimental but not sticky? TLE::CHONO::RANDALLOn another planetMon Mar 12 1990 14:509
Well, we celebrated the condition of our collective pocketbook by not
having a band, or dancing (much to my grandmother's disappointment),
but I can remember at least two friends dancing to "Sunrise, Sunset"
from Fiddler on the Roof.

For one of them, the father then danced with his youngest daughter, the
flower girl, who was about eight, to "Thank Heaven For Little Girls."

1021.3I'll Love You This Year..Next Year..and forever..CSCMA::BALDWINMon Mar 12 1990 15:087
    I can't remember the artists, but we had an extremely unusual song
    for our wedding, as the DJ's lost that sugary "Daddy's Little Girl".

    We had them play an old Davy Jones song called "I'll Love You Forever."
    which if you listen to the lyrics, could be for a father and not
    a "lover". There wasn't a dry eye in the house, either. I just wouldn't
    recommend Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" by any means :-) :-) :-)
1021.4Here's a couple...WMOIS::D_ALEXANDERMon Mar 12 1990 15:4213
    A close friend of mine had "Through The Years" by Kenny Rogers
    which is another one that if you listen to the lyrics, could
    also be for a father.

    Also a cousin of mine used the song "The Wind Beneath My Wings"
    by Bette Midler, you know the one that goes..."did you ever
    know that you are my hero?" from the movie Beaches. My cousin
    used the song from her (the bride) to her brother and man was
    that a tear jerker, but i think it would make an great
    father daughter song!

    Good luck,
    Deb

    	I had been wondering the same thing as I don't like
    	"Daddy's Little Girl".  My fiance's brother's fiance
    	is having "Through the Years" by Kenny Rogers. I am using
    	"Forever Young" by Rod Stewart probably slowed down just a
    	tad. Dad gave me the 45 for Christmas.

    	Good luck! It's hard to think of some that are fitting!

    There is another one, the title of which I can't remember,
    that has a chorus that starts 'turn around, and you're young..'
    it used to be used to sell photograph film but it is quite pretty.

    It was very moving.

1021.8Who knows, but whaetever it was, we waltzed to it!CADSYS::RICHARDSONMon Mar 12 1990 18:119
    We hired a folk dance band for our wedding, but I don't remember what
    they played for the first waltz! I danced it with my father (one of
    the world's worst dancers: he was an electrical engineering professor)
    and Paul danced with his grandmother (his mother's mother and our only
    living grandparent at the time we got married, eight years ago). We
    had a friend of our do the photography, and he got a neat picture of
    the four of us dancing - which makes me sad now to look at, since both
    my father and Paul's grandmother have since died. At any rate, I was
    much too distracted to recall what the song was.

    	You're getting married in 3 weeks! Have you lost your mind yet?
    (I'm getting married in 5 1/2 weeks.)

    One idea that I had was "How Sweet it Is to be Loved By You" by James
    Taylor. However, after listening to it over and over, I realized that
    the somewhat muddled middle verse was definitely aimed at lovers.
    However, if you're having a band they could either make something up
    for that verse or muddle the middle even worse. (isn't that a toungue
    twister!) I just liked the chorus cause it kept saying "thank you".

    Please keep the ideas coming, I still havben't decided mine either.
    Also, anybody have any ideas for a waltz with my new husband?

    Rachael

    Congratulations, I'd love to do that day over again! Have fun.

    A few suggestions:

    The Times of Your Life, sung by Paul Anka, it goes something like
    this: Goodmorning yesterday, you wake up and time has slipped
    away.....

    Or, my personal favorite, Over the Rainbow, Somewhere over the
    rainbow, skies are blue.... It's not really a father/daughter song,
    but it's my all time favorite and my Dad always used to sing it
    to me and we always watched the Wizard together, kind of our time
    together.

    Oh have fun!

    "Could I Have This Dance" by Anne Murray (I think). Corny and trite,
    but a lovely waltz and a nice sentiment.

    Thank you Everyone for your numerous replies, there are some
    wonderful suggestions which I will check out with our DJ.

    Yes, the day is coming nearer... TWO weeks from this Saturday,
    and I am certainly getting excited and pretty nervous!

    My fiance and I will be dancing to a duet by Crystal Gayle and
    (I think) Eddie Rabbit, titled "Just You and I".

    One verse mentions "the dreams we treasure" and "our world together".
    It's really moving...

    Thanks again!!!

    Hi

    Congratulations ! I just wanted to add my two cents. My grandfather
    gave me away and we had "Sunrise Sunset". But I really like the
    one by Paul Anka as referred to in .10 (The times of your life)

    If you want something romantic, you might consider "The Anniversary
    Song", which was recorded by Dinah Shore in the mid 1940s. (The first
    few lines are included below for those who may not be familiar with the
    lyrics.)

    	Oh, how we danced
    	On the night we were wed
    	We vowed our true love
    	Though a word wasn't said

    	The world was anew(?)
    	There were stars in the skies
    	Except for the few
    	That were there in your eyes

    If you're looking for something a little more upbeat, there's
    "I'll Dance at Your Wedding".

    dance with her father. It was just lovely.

    		I got married last year and I picked "To Sir With Love".
    		It was very appropriate and real nice, my father balled
    		his eyes out. If you don't know the song it's basically about
    		a young girl thanking an older gentlemen for teaching her
    		about life.

1021.19Some More Suggestions...ACESMK::POIRIERThu Mar 15 1990 09:5512
    I danced with my father to "The Way We Were".

    Other weddings I've been too used "Wind Beneath My Wings", "That's
    What Friends Are For".

    Some other suggestions "Try to Remember" (Harry Belefonte) , "You Are
    the Sunshine of My Life" (Stevie Wonder) and "You've got a friend"
    (Carole King).

    Best Wishes,

    	Once again, thanks for all the great suggestions! I'm meeting
    	with my DJ soon to hear them all and make a choice. Hopefully
    	he will have all the LPs you've mentioned... There were soooo
    	many wonderful suggestions - I know some of the songs, and I'm
    	anxious to hear them all at length.

    	Keep 'em coming!, and thanks again!

1021.21Spanish Waltz for usULTRA::WITTENBERGSecure Systems for Insecure PeopleThu Mar 15 1990 11:458
    We're using the "Spanish Waltz", which I think is actually Irish.
    Cynthia has told the band leader that playing anything from
    "Fiddler on the Roof" would be bad for his health. I think she
    feels that it's just too corny by now. We haven't yet worried
    about dancing with our parents, except to find out that getting
    steel toed dress shoes isn't easy :-).

1021.22how about a last dance?JAIMES::LESSARDThu Mar 15 1990 15:2313

    You have all the great selections for dad's and first songs
    here! How about a last dance? I let my husband pick it (he
    felt so useless in most of basic wedding planning). He picked
    My Way (a favorite from the old college days....)

    . A little strange I thought, but we ended up having
    everyone in a circle around us singing along, and not too
    many dry eyes. It seemed to hit a chord with the crowd
    and I swear it was just as memorable as if Frank was
    singing it himself.

1021.23Cheers! To a Lifetime of HappinessUSEM::DONOVANFri Mar 16 1990 01:397
    Congratulations!! I love all the songs listed. I'm sure you'll pick
    the right one. I love "Daddy's Little Girl". I went to a wedding
    with my girlfriend last year. I didn't even know the couple. I heard
    Daddy's Little Girl and cried just the same.

    A last dance number? I hope you don't intend to go with the ol'
    "standbys" by Donna Summer "Last Dance" and/or Fool and the Gang's
    "Celebration Nights"(or whatever it's called)---blecccchhhh! Yuk!

    Go with something original...like my wife and I chose what we feel
    is our "theme song"..."I've Had The Time Of My Life" from the
    soundtrack "Dirty Dancing"....yeah!!!
1021.25Dirty Dancing / Patrick Swayze!SCOLOX::GLIDDENFri Mar 16 1990 14:0918

    re.:  .24

    "The Time Of My Life..." by Paul Anka [I think] was mentioned earlier
    in this note - YES IT'S A GREAT SONG!!! And Patrick Swayze is not
    too bad either!!! If the DJ doesn't have what we want (below) we will
    dance to that!

    Our first choice is one of my favorites for a going-away/last-dance song,
    entitled "I Believe In You" by Don Williams. It's on the 'country'
    side but is the nicest song and leaves me feeling so happy. It
    mentions (not in this order) "I believe in Mom and Dad", "I believe in
    babies", "I believe in magic", "and I believe in You".

    I agree to go with something 'original'!

    congrats on your wedding!!! Enjoy - its such a wonderful day.

    I danced a waltz with my father. The song was, Sunrise, Sunset. It
    was very nice. I'd also suggest practicing with dad beforehand. We
    got so many comments on how well we danced together and it was due to
    our practice.
