Are you looking for info in NewEngland or anywhere? FWIW,
here's my info if you want it! ;-)
> What is the name of the health club, What town is it in, and
> How much does it cost?
US Swim and Fitness -- Managed by Holiday Fitness Centers and
member of Nat'l Health and Fitness Club of America. I can
transfer my membership to any club in the organization.
It's in Colorado Springs....
I pay $35 a month for a premier membership which entitles me
to towel services, free tanning and unlimited consultations
with instructors. After three years, I an renew at $75 a
year. Bare-bones membership is $17-$20 a month.
> How long have you been a member?
2 years.
> Were you already involved with some sort of exercise
> program/sport before you enrolled?
Just sports....volleyball and softball.
> What type of facilities does your club offer?
> ie: swimming pool, racket ball courts, etc
we have three rather large
facilities with aerobics rooms, free weight rooms, running
tracks, tanning beds, nautilus/kaiser/LifeStep room,
Cardiovascular room (LifeCycles, Aerobicycles, Stairmasters,
LifeSteps, rowing machines and tvs!), along with a lap pool,
a sauna, a jacuzzi and a steam room.
> What do you like best about being a member?
It gives me a safe, clean environment to get fit. I don't
have to worry about adverse weather conditions or someone
attacking me while running and such. Plus my program is
monitored constantly by a certified instructor. I get a fat
analysis every month and a fitness test.
> Have you noticed any changes in yourself, since you joined?
> ie: lost weight, feel better about yourselft, etc.
Well, I've lost 25 lbs so far (15 more to go), I no longer
need to sleep 8 hours, I don't get run-down and tired in the
afternoons, my peak heart rate has gone from 28 beats in 10
seconds to 23, which means I've become much more physically
fit. My bloodpressure has dropped and is no longer as
erratic as it once was (used to vary from 102/60 to 140/85).
My body fat percentage has dropped from 38% to 26%. I feel
better, I look better, I'm more confident that I have to
ability to do ANYHING I set my mind to.
Hope this helps.

| Just FYI: Holiday Spas is currently under indictment (again) for
consistent racial discrimination in their application acceptance
policy. This policy is alledged to be set at their corporate level.

(I hope this isn't too late. I was in class last week.)
I belong to Holiday Fitness Center in Lowell. The club offers
everything Mike mentioned except the sauna's. It also has raquetball
courts and the fitness instructors are very helpful.
I payed a $50 init fee plus 29.95 per month for 2 years. After that
renewal is $75 per year. I have been working out at this club for
about 1 year (since it opened).
Before joining Holiday, I belonged to Gold's Gym, before that
Longfellow Tennis Club in Sudbury. Before that, I was a lazy, flabby
college student.
I think that exercise has dramatically improved my life, physically and
mentally. I can handle stress much better, I (almost, 6 more pounds),
like my body and my cholesteral ratio is normal due to the increase in
HDL's (good cholesterals) from exercising. I believe that my life will
be longer and happier due to exercise, in part. I have lost about 11
pounds in the last year and my body composition has changed. (more
muscle, less fat). I've gone from a size 8 or size 10 to a size 6, my
bra size has drop 1 cup size, (yea!). About 6 months ago I was really
discouraged about losing weight and the people at Holiday were really
helpful. They made me write down everything I was eating and then went
over it with me to show me where my mistakes were. They helped me to
redesign my fitness program to keep my heart rate in the right zone,
(not too high, not too low). While exercising, they would come up to
me and ask my heart rate because they found that I had a tendancy to
get my pulse up too high.
When I first moved to the Boston area, I didn't know a soul. Exercise
relieved (all kinds) of tension and helped me to not feel lonely.
Also, my fiance and I work out together. That helps motivate me to
keep it up. (although I probably would anyways).
Have I rambled enough? In my mind, exercise in a safe environment
radically improves the quality and length of life.

967.8 | Last minute reply....sorry! | FACVAX::S_WILLIAMS | | Fri Feb 09 1990 15:19 | 37 |
| I am a member of Orchard Hills Athletic club on Leominster/Lancaster
line (not sure which town its considered in). I paid a $50 init fee
(would of been $150 but because I work for Digital they gave me a
discount) plus 36.00 per month. I've been going there for just over
two years now.
Before that I told a BOGUSS aerobics class at the Y, where the
instructor seemed to thrive on the attention she got from men and
because of that, felt the need to prove to everyone how "in shape" she was
by going overboard with each exercise to the point where people were
getting hurt. Being a former aerobics instructor, I couldn't believe
some of the things she did and to what extent she went to. But most
important, how unhealthy and unsafe they were for everyone, my sister and
I both quit with several people behind us. (sorry for rambling)
Before that I went to Gloria Stevens. (Now Better Body Enterprises)
Orchard Hills offers a full schedule of Aerobics class at various
levels. Two aerobic rooms, basketball and raquetball courts, full
natualis and freeweights, indoor and outdoor pools, saunas in locker
rooms (assuming one is in the mens locker room), jacuzzi, lounge, child
care, sports store, and several different diet/health programs and
social events.
I really enjoy working out. It relieves alot of tension and stress
build up through the course of the day. I have much more energy and
motivation plus I can eat whatever I want and not have to worry about
it. Overall, I workout to maintain my weight and as a stress/tension
release, occasionally to lose weight (extra holiday lbs). I do notice
a major difference when i don't workout for a couple of weeks. At
those times, I can't wait to get back into it mainly because I feel
sluggish and out of shape.
Hope it helps

Well, I'm not a member right now, but up until recently I worked out at
Marlboro Nautilus, in Marlboro MA.
Cost varied, depending on whether you joined quarterly, yearly....it
was about $110 for 3 months, and got less per month as you signed up
for more time.
I was a member for about a year.
I had already been doing some nautilus elsewhere, and some aerobics at
work.
Marlboro Nautilus offers free weights, nautilus, aerobics, lifecycles,
stairmaster, rowing machines, a tanning booth, help with your program,
a sauna....
I loved the atmosphere there. I left because I couldn't justify the
expenditure per month when I could shell out a one-time investment for
a piece of equipment I could have at home (which I did - I got a rowing
machine - and I still do aerobics at work).
When I was a member there I could talk to the people, work out with my
lifting partner, work out on a variety of equipment if my lifting
partner wasn't there, go at my own pace, ask for a spotter if I needed
one, do aerobics one day and other things the next...
There were lots of changes - physical, mental, and emotional, since I
started working out. Self-esteem rose, physical strength improved,
stamina improved, I didn't lose weight while I was a member, but I did
work off fat and gain muscle - emotionally I was a bit tougher since I
could work out all those aggressions.....
I think the best thing about it was blowing away all the preconceived
limitations about what I was capable of. THAT was enlightening.

967.10 | | CSC32::M_VALENZA | Note with pasta in your hair. | Sat Mar 24 1990 14:54 | 31 |
| The Gazette-Telegraph reported today that US Swim & Fitness is going to
reduce its hours of operation. This comes as a serious blow to those
of us who have taken advantage of the fact that the clubs are open 24
hours a day. Effective April 1 (but this is no April Fool's joke),
they will be open 5 AM to midnight on weekdays, and 7 AM to 8 PM on
weekends.
This move has angered many club members, and one group of people has
even organized a petition. However, David Garfinkel, the US Swim &
Fitness area director in Colorado Springs, is apparently unmoved by the
fact that this decision angers his clientele. He has stated that the
new policy is not negotiable, and the newspaper quotes him as saying,
"If people think it's a problem, it won't be solved because this is the
way it's going to be. If most people were intelligent enough they
would realize this is an intelligent move." Those who are
inconvenienced by this new policy, apparently, are just being stupid.
In my case, this *is* an inconvenience. I have often taken advantage
of the late hours, which have accommodated my schedule, and which also
have the advantage of allowing me to work out when the club is not
packed wall to wall with people, which is usually the case during peak
hours. I will no longer be able to do this.
The newspaper article quotes people who say they chose to join US Swim
& Fitness specifically because it is open 24 hours. Although contracts
do not mention hours of operation, sales staff definitely used this as
a selling point. The article tells of one woman, who has worked out at
4 AM virtually every day for 2 years, and who says she is asking for a
refund of her lifetime membership if the new policy takes effect.
