My mother-in-law is going through the tramua of deciding whether to
leave her husband and get a divorce.
She is very unsure about her legal position ( in England ), i.e. If she
leaves her husband will she be entitled to half of the assets, or
because she has left home will he be able to keep everything?
Can anybody help?

I'm about to be divorced, having been separated over two years.
My understanding is that assets are split according to who contributed
to their acquisition and maintenance (not just in the financial
sense) and what the needs of the two parties are. The parent keeping
the children would be likely therefore to get more. I've a book
that has been very useful - I'll post the details here when I've
checked them!
If your mother-in-law has a low income she could also use the Green
form process for getting cheap (around 10 pounds) legal advice before
she takes any action. The Citizens Advice Bureau will give her
a list of solicitors who participate in the scheme and also advise
on whether she's eligible.

The book's called "Divorce - the things you thought you'd never
need to know" by J.M. Black, published by Paperfronts, Elliot Right
