891.0. "survivor psychiatrist in CA?" by ULTRA::ZURKO (We're more paranoid than you are.) Mon Dec 11 1989 13:37

A member of the community is looking for a reference for a psychiatrist in
the Palo Alto area. I checked for other topics to post this in that allowed
responding via notes, but I couldn't find any other that seemed applicable.

I'm moving to Palo Alto around the 1st of the new year. One of
the big items on my list of things to do is to find a replacement for
my shrink. This is probably also the hardest thing I'll have to
do. So I thought that before I start picking names out of the
phone book, I'd see if I could find some points of contact from people.
If you know of someone, or someone who might know someone, please
let me know.

I'm looking for a psychiatrist who is skilled in dealing with survivors of
childhood sexual abuse, someone who could do maintenance on my
drugs (lithium and imipramine) and who is someone I can trust (nothing
like putting the most important quality last.) Someone who
runs a survivors' group would be a good contact for me. Or a therapist
who is associated with a psychiatrist, etc.

Given where I'm at with my current shrink, this is probably going to
be one of the hardest parts of the move for me. Any pointers
will be greatly appreciated, either posted here or mailed to me via
Mez.

thanks

I recognize that this may not be the anonymous basenoter's preferred
path, but I believe the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) may be able
to assist with such referrals. The Santa Clara facilities phone book
has these three entries for EAP-

    EAP- 800-624-6185
    EAP- Santa Clara/Sunnyvale- 408-988-3535
    EAP- Palo Alto/Mountain View- 415-965-7999

The number for Incest Survivors Annonymous in the (415) area code is
    (415) 359-2070. The phone book lists that number to be located in
Pacifica. I know from things I've heard from other people that there
are meetings here in the San Jose area though.

P.S. You could have Mez post your note in WCSM::SILICON_VALLEY to see
if any of the local readers can help you. THEBAY::SAN_FRANCISCO
may also be a good place to ask too.
