863.0. "Party: Saturday, December 9th, 6:00" by REGENT::BROOMHEAD (Don't panic -- yet.) Tue Nov 14 1989 17:07

In response to Bonnie's (et aliarum) plea for a party site I offer
my house for the evening of Saturday, December 9th. The theme for
the food will be: Whatever You Think People Will Finish. Starting
time is after six o'clock, and ending time is after Tim appears.

Considerations: I live in Wayland, Mass.
I own two cats, but I intend to steam clean the
                        rugs before December 1st.
Food disappears fastest if it 1) arrives early,
                        2) is pre-cut if necessary, and 3) has all
                        necessary serving utensils available.
There are several great malls nearby, suitable
for killing multiple avians with one trip.

12/9? 12/9? Did someone say 12/9? I will probably actually be on the
"wrong" coast that weekend...

Now let's see. I need to wear my sexy underwear, no shirt, torn levis unbuttoned
at the waist... what else? Ah, perhaps I should bring halloween pictures from
the last three or four years, and... a note from my wife? :-)

Ann, in what town do you live? I may be able to make it, at least
for part of the evening, depending on the location...

Gee, guess I'd better go clothes shopping!

And yes, if I can manage it, I'll bring mousse.

My, my, I am between the horns of a dilemma...

As seems to be quite common for the last several years, my theater
group has selected a bad evening for their Christmas party. In the past, I
has split my time between the two events, but this year they decided to get
fancy and have a sit-down dinner, making it much harder to split the
evening.

I guess at this point, I'm a "maybe"

Amazing...simply amazing, this party just happens to fall at the *perfect*
time. Things couldn't possibly have worked out better for timing that
weekend, and not *just* this party. Wowza, the Ghods are with me today!

(Details available at the party, on request, or earlier, to the perceptive.)

I'll be there with beau (Don) bearing something that fits into Weight
Watchers... :-)

I'd like to make it. The problem is, a friend of mine is in an 8:00
concert in Lexington that night. CONFLICT!!! Wayland's pretty close
to Lexington, though, and on my way. I might:

...show up at the beginning and leave early, like the last =wn= party I
    went to, or

...show up late and stay until Tim comes home (er, when _is_ that?!),
    or

everyone is very slow signing up...

(I do recall the party held this time last year was also
somewhat sparsely attended.)

Maybe, Nancy, Bonnie was simply doing to you what you did to me. At
least she didn't threaten to pull your fingernails out, and *then*
forget you!

What goes around, comes around. (Someone has to leave Bonnie off the
next party list, but that seems like it will be difficult since she
usually *does* the party lists. And if she leaves her self off...well
the recursion is scary. Eventually, of course, this will all end when
*I* leave someone off a party list.)

With Tommy's (my 6-year-old) eyes hungrily upon me, I produced two
batches of chocolate mousse this evening. 1.5 batches with Grand
Marnier, .5 batch (about 12-14 servings, I think) with orange
extract. The latter doesn't taste just like the former, but it's
not bad at all. If I can manage to keep most of it from Tom by
Saturday, Leslie and I will be there with the mousse.

For those who are interested, the orange cups contain the Grand Marnier
variety and the blue cups have the orange extract variety. I will
be interested in comments on the latter - I was unsure of how much
extract to use (it ends up being about 1/6 the quantity of Grand
    Marnier).

Some time try substituting Cherry Marnier for the Grand... I do this

Just so Steve Lionel doesn't get all the glory, I made a frozen chocolate
souffle (actually, I made two; one for this evening's party)

11	egg whites
1/2	cup sugar
1 1/4	pound chocolate (15 oz. semi-sweet, rest unsweetened)
3	cups heavy cream
1/4	cup Cointreau

Melt chocolate.
Whip cream.
Whip egg whites (add sugar half-way through).
Blend in chocolate and Cointreau.
Blend in whipped cream.

Put into one eight inch and one nine inch springform pans. Freeze.
Remove the springform sides.

Frosting (ganache)

6	oz chocolate (3 oz. semi-sweet, rest unsweetened), chopped.
1/2	cup heavy cream.

Bring cream to boil. Add chocolate, mix quickly and spread over the
souffles Freeze again.

Contains no calories.

Martin.

Well, Bonnie.. while you are doing that, I'll try to give a mini report
    of the evening...

    Lets see...

Steve Lionel and Leslion (sp?) sure didn't stay long... Are you sure
you just didn't want to sample the competition Steve :-)????

    Charles stripes were nice....

I don't think it was decided, but I still think the Toilet Paper should
come down under :-), and yes, Toilet seats should be *DOWN*

Someone should ask Nancy Bittle to show you her juggling talents now
that John did such a good job teaching her, *if* you can get the balls
away from little Morgan Burrow. :-)...

Ah, but if you missed it, then you should get the video from Charles
Haynes... as soon as he edits out the couch sleepy scene.

I still can't believe Doug G made it without the directions... that was
    neat...

Jody - your picture was FANTASTIC!!!....

And the pictures from the rally/Doug O's party were great... Doug O -
did anyone tell you that you are *very* photogenic?...

And the books Charles brought... well, I made it though one of them
    okay....

Well.. maybe someone can fill in where I left out parts....

Gale (who couldn't wake up enough to fly the next morning!)

Gale, how was it? I only sampled Pam Smith's chocolate cookies and
     Martin's jello :-) [you said it Martin, I didn't :-]; both were
     delicious.

> The bedroom revelation was great!!... I think Charles won though :-)

Yea - found it amusing that the entire room seemed to understand
what we were up to after exchanging barely audible whispers and
making way for the stairs. Felt like E.F. Hutton :-]

What did Charles win? [or was I in too much shock to notice as I

Gale, I think you meant the Nov 12 rally photos (which DougO was in)
and _Joe White's_ party. But yes, I think DougO has been told that
     a few times before :-).

That's OK, though - all these gorgeous out-of-town =wn=ers (DougO,
Joe White, and Charles "married_but_still_fun_to_flirt_with" Haynes) -

I don't know, but I think we should have taped the whole thing and sent
it to his wife. Perhaps we should start the "=WN= most outrageous

that 'attire' anyway? Maybe Jody wins anyway...except she just brought

    G'Day,

It sounds like somebody took lots of photos and video tape at the
party. How would some kind soul like to send me a couple of photos in
the internal mail so I can finally see what you folks look like - some
sort of legend identifying who is who would be nice too. I'd love to
see the video too but alas NTSC and PAL just don't like each other.
I'll even send a photo of me to you if you like (but you probably
wouldn't like :-) ). I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'm
never going to get to one of these parties so at least when another is
coming up I can look at the photos and think about being there.

We also have an NTSC U-Matic (yuck!) player here at SNL. VHS in
PAL is obviously the answer but until the US sees the error of their
ways and converts to PAL then I don't think we are going to get it :-).

As for digitised images, GIF is the preferred format for me as I
can see those on the PC at home. We only have one workstation in this
building and it is only monochrome so other DEC formats would not be as
    good.

If somebody wants to send the photos or video via internal mail
(customs might not like the video) then send them to me at SNL 1/1 and
I'll see that all interested Aussies get to see them.

Dale, I should have sent you mail to see if you were at the Xmas

Well, my one photo from the party came out. (The rest were taken
in 1893; I really should develop my pictures more promptly.) It
looks relaxed, chummy, and quite innocuous. Doug is draped over
a chair on the right, D! and a few others are munging with Charles'
camera in the center, Morgan Burrows is standing on the couch (to
annoy people better), and Charles is sitting on the floor on the
left. The, uh, nameless woman he is sitting, uh, in front of, does
    not have her face showing.

I had a good time. Tim is still doggedly working his way through
the leftover beer. He thanks Bonnie for the tabouli: "Is that
tabouli?" "Yes." "Great! Is it homemade?" "Yes." "All right!"

There's only one thing. Think. In my front hall is a sturdy plastic

863.75Implementation DetailsOXNARD::HAYNESCharles HaynesSat Dec 23 1989 22:2325
Techhie alert, about to decend into the bits! Dive! Dive!

The process is this. I play the NTSC signal into a "frame grabber" that
turns it into a 480x640 pixel (8x8x8 rgb) array. The frame graber works
with any NTSC video source, including broadcast, laserdisk, or VCR.

Once the frame is grabbed, we have LOTS of ways to play with it. The
DECimage software is willing to output lots of different formats, and I
have softare that will put it out in various others. The formats that I
expect to get requests for are GIF (a format popular on IBM-PCs), color
sixels (that will work on VT300 class terminals), X Window system pixmaps
(maybe in window dump format, maybe not), Postscript (color), and maybe
(probably) I will dither it down and convert it to black and white. That
will be viewable on VT240 class terminals (sixels) and I can make regular
postscript out of it as well.

[Disclaimer: I'm not an imaging weenie, see the Imaging notesfile if you
want more details. I'm also not a DEC terminal expert, so I don't know
which of our terminals support what kind of sixels. However, I *am* a
DECwindows expert so I DO know what kind of X window system support I
    can provide.]

Charles, you didn't mention my favorite format, DDIF (Digital Document
Interchange Format)! The best thing about getting images in this
format is that they are revisable using DECpaint. Ever wonder what
Charles would look like with a handlebar mustache? Have him mail you a
DDIF image (VMS mail works fine), extract it (with header), and
"$ Mcr Decw$Paint", if you have a workstation and DECwindows installed.

If you don't have the pleasures of a workstation, but you do have VMS
V5.1 or better with DECwindows or the CDA converter library installed,
you can convert the image to a PostScript file and print it out, then
use felt tip marker to draw the mustache ;-)

By the way, KO looks much better with bushier eyebrows...
