849.0. "Help on Savannah, Ga." by DEMON::CROCITTO (PhantomoftheOPERAtingSystem) Thu Nov 02 1989 13:32

Hi,

My mom and I are planning a trip to Savannah, Ga. this Feb. Does anyone in that
area have suggestions on good places to see/stay/eat? Also would anyone know
the general temp around that time of year?

Thanks for your help,

Jane

The absolutely!!!!! best place to eat is Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House.
I know they serve lunch, I'm not real sure about dinner. Mrs. Wilkes
has her own cookbook that gives the address which I have at home.
I'll bring it in tomorrow.....I hope I remember.....

When you pass by Mrs. Wilkes in the afternoon, you see a line of ALOT
of people standing outside what looks like a normal neighborhood home.
At openning time, 100 people are ushered inside (10 tables, 10 per
table). There is no menu, one set price. (when I was last there about
6-7 years ago it was $4.75 per person) The workers bring out plate
after plate of family style dishes. You eat as much as you want, just
keep asking for more, although plenty is brought out. Dessert is
included too and pitchers of ice tea, milk....

I read an article recently on this place but I don't remember where.
It said that although Mrs. Wilkes is still around, she pretty old and
her family, (daughter-in-laws, daughters, sons and grandkids) do most
    of the cooking/serving now.

    It is a must!!!!!

BTW: I was there last during March (when John Belushi died, remember)
and the weather was warm/hot. I wore shorts, got a bit of a tan but
seem to remember it being a bit breezy (cool) near the ocean although
I was still in shorts. The natives I was visiting thought it was still
a bit too cool for shorts though.

You must go to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House........!!!

I have a friend in Hinesville which is close to Savannah. Send me mail
and I'll send you her name and address and phone. I'm sure she'd be
glad to make recommendations and give you directions to places while
    you're there.
