| I'll address one aspect of your note.
> MOST of us agree that America drives too fast,
False. If the speed limits are too high, why do so many people exceed them?
Answer: because they are too low, people don't respect them because they
are too low, and because a speed limit isn't really a limit, it's a ballpark
figure to shoot for (on the low side). If REASONABLE limits were put on speed,
people would obey. Then they could indeed be enforced as maximum limits. Since
the speed limits are too low, so many people exceed them that it is impossible
to practically use them as a maximum speed.
>don't laugh try driving at rush hour in the
> fast lane.....
Yeah- you go about 15 mph on most roads.
>Car makers advertise cars that go 140mph, and make
> this the #1 selling feature of the car (VW's new car).
You object to their marketing scheme? If it didn't sell, they wouldn't do it.
>What is this
> doing for the population that like speed??
Huh?
>Me think a double message is here, Most everybody is
> screaming that people drive too fast but yet look how cars are made
> today...FAST.
If most everybody is "screaming" that people drive too fast, they must be
doing it from a speeding car, because the majority of drivers on most roads
exceed the speed limit (and many more would if there was no enforcement of
the limit).
Sorry- you just pressed a hot button of mine.
We now return to our regularly scheduled program...

| Uh? Mr. Kuhlmann?
The "Hot Buttons" note is note 5.
(I mention this because *I* have a superstitious fear of starting
a new note for a subject that already has its own note. (Your
mileage (Sorry :-) may vary.))

I didn't move it because it seemed as much a leadin to an interesting
new topic as it did a Hot Button. I still think so, and I hope other
people will agree enough to get it going.

| Re discussion of speed, please take it to ACCARS::CARBUFFS. It is a
more apropriate note for such discusion (a favorite of mine)
Re the general message of the base note...
The problems of saying one thing and doing another is not unique to
America. My feeling is that in the US we all have the opportunity to
(stop bitchin and) do something about it! Citizens of other nations do
not have that option. When I see the type of editorial as in the base
note, I wonder what the writer is doing about it? We can drive change
if we are motivated.
We all have our issues with the system...
