798.0. "need help with sorority party" by AKOV12::GIUNTA () Mon Sep 25 1989 13:43

I'm on the committee for my sorority's 10 year anniversary, and am
looking for some ideas on things we could do. We will be having a
dinner-dance for sisters and their guests. I'm looking for some ideas
on things that we can do to make the event fun and memorable. I keep
thinking that things similar to what happens at a high-school reunion
might be good, but my reunions have just been dances with not much to
pull together things that happened in high school. Might anyone have
    any ideas I could use?

We are planning on making some sort of a program that gives a little
biographical sketch of everyone, and have come up with a questionnaire
that asks the normal questions like date of graduation, major, where
they work, what they do, if they are married and have children, and
what they remember from their pledge/sister days. We'd like to have
anecdotes of things that happened to sisters, but we're not sure of
the best way to ask for that. Any suggestions?

We are also planning on digging up some pictures from each year and
posting them in the hall so that people can see what we looked like
back then, and the guests can see some of the history behind the
    chapter.

We talked about favors for the sisters, and bud vases were suggested.
I would like to have something other than bud vases since I have a
feeling most of us have more of those than we could possibly use
anyhow. Does anyone have any suggestions of something we could use for
favors that would be useful and creative?

I wasn't sure where to ask this, and thought that this community might
have some ideas that I could use. I'd certainly appreciate any help
    that I might get here.

    Thanks,
    Cathy

I've never belonged to a sorority, so the sort of things that appeal to me
might not appeal to your sisters.

The Shakespeare Ensemble at MIT had a 10-year dinner, then went to the
production that was on that year. Is there any _real_ event you can share
(induction, just a regular meeting). It seems so much more, well, real.

At the one high school reunion I went to, there were certain people I couldn't
sit with that I wanted to talk to (and that wanted to talk to me :-). Will
there be time and space for that? (and quiet)

Hmmm, favors. Small, creative, useful things that everyone needs and no one has
too many of. Something folks wouldn't bother to get themselves, but would use
with pride. Ice scraper for the car? Spoon rest? I really don't know...

If you are holding the reunion in a hotel you could ask the Convention
Services Manager (they are sometimes the Catering Manager too) for
ideas of a theme and/or help in designing one. They are usually very
creative people and could probably help in ideas for a memento.

As for getting anecdotes, in your questionaire you could ask for any
humorus stories your sisters remember. Sounds like it'll be fun!

At my high school senior banquet the favor was a globe shaped glass
with the school name and date printed on it. Ten years later I still
have it and use it. It doesn't match the rest of the glassware, but
it's my unique glass that holds special memories for me.

At my high school reunion, we were given buttons (pins) with the
picture that appeared in the yearbook and name on them. It was
fun seeing how people had changed since high school.

I have been to 3 reunions, my wifes and mine. At the last one they
did the picture as you noted. I thought it was great! Sometimes
you remember people as they were when you last saw them.
If you have access to the pictures, go for it. It is also quite
the ice breaker in a large crowd, and it doesn't cost hardly anything.

At my mom's 25th reunion they gave away prizes...Each class member was
asked to fill out a little survey (or autobiography) and prizes were
    awarded in different categories.

One for the person who had the most kids...
One for the person who had to travel the farthest to get there...
One for the person who had been married the longest...

    etc.

They also had a collage of class pictures made up as well as the
    picture pins.
