The Society of Women Engineers is a nonprofit educational service organization
of graduate engineers and men and women with equivalent engineering experience.
The specific objectives of the Society are:
o To inform young women, their parents, counselors, and the general public
of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the
opportunities open to them;
o To assist women engineers in readying themselves for a return to active
work after temporary retirement;
o To serve as a center of information on women in engineering; and
o To encourage women engineers to attain high levels of education and
professional achievement.
History
SWE was founded in 1949-50 when small groups of women engineers started
meeting in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. The Society
was incorporated in 1952.
In 1961, SWE established its headquarters office in the United Engineering
Center in New York, joining many of the engineering disciplines. SWE is a
Charter Member of the engineering umbrella organization, the American
Association of Engineering Societies (AAES); an Affiliate of the National
Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE); and a Member of the Federation of
Organizations for Professional Women (FOPW).
In 1976, SWE membership was opened to men. All SWE membership grades and
qualifications are the same for men as they are for women.
SWE Student Sections have been chartered at more than 240 colleges,
universities, and engineering institutes located throughout the United
States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Digital is listed as having a SWE Corporate Membership, and it also lists
Digital as a corporate contributor to SWE's scholarship program.

789.4 | Could you explain grades and qualifications? | TLE::GOODMAN | I don't have a personal name yet... | Fri Sep 15 1989 10:20 | 11 |

In 1976, SWE membership was opened to men. All SWE membership grades
and qualifications are the same for men as they are for women.
Could you explain what this means "grades" and "qualifications". Does
this mean there are prerequisites in order to join the society? How
are women graded?

Before I entered the wonderful world of computing, I was
a Power Systems Engineer. I worked on the design, testing
and building of "black boxes" that would shut down a power
plant (both nukes and otherwise) in the event of a problem.
At that time, I had it on pretty good authority that females
comprised under 1% of this profession. A friend of mine who
happened to be a semiconducter engineer suggested that I apply
for a membership in this organization. I did look into it and
because my undergraduate degree was not specifically in
Engineering (yes they had a qualifications list), I did not
apparently qualify. Therefore, I did not bother sending in the app.
They may have changed but at that time, they wanted degrees in
engineering ONLY either at the undergraduate or graduate level.

| What are the requirements for joining? I have an "engineering
background", meaning I took engineering courses, but I didn't get
an engineering degree, and I'm not an engineer.
Can only certain people join?
