772.0. "Welcome to the Womannotes Flotation Tank" by CSC32::M_VALENZA (All aboard sub rosa subway...) Thu Aug 31 1989 10:55

Welcome to the Womannotes Flotation Tank. Please, come in. You say
this place was hard to find? Well, I can understand that; with all the
bickering and fighting that goes on in Womannotes, it must have been
hard to imagine that there might be a place where you can just relax
and feel mellow and think warm thoughts for a while. But now you have
found us. Yes, our services are absolutely free, and we are open 24
hours a day, except on certain weekends when MOSAIC goes down for VMS
upgrades. Here, let me help you up into the flotation tank. I'll
just turn on some New Age music for you. No, New Age music is not the
same as New Wave music. There! Don't you feel more relaxed already?
All those peaceful thoughts are just flowing all over you. All that
Womannotes strife just melts away. Now you can pretend that the men
and women of Womannotes can actually coexist in peace and harmony. You
are feeling more and more relaaaaaxed, you feel veeeeeeery peaceful...

...There, wasn't that good? The next time you want to find a peaceful
haven from all the conference battles, just come to this topic. Thank
you for stopping by, and come again soon.

I'm sorry, I don't know of places in Boston. In Palo Alto "Watercourse Way" will
rent time in a floatation tank. Various other massage places, and hot tub places
do too, but Watercourse Way is the only one I know of for sure.

Try calling hot tub rental places and (legitimate) massage places.

Good luck and let us know how you like it!

How can one determine what is a "legitimate" massage place? Is

          Laura, thanks!

I just called them, and here's the scoop:

          It's $30 per float (1 float = 1 hour) if you've never been there
before. After that it's $22 a float. Each additional hour per
float is $15. You can even buy a float plan for several planned
          floats at a discount.

They are open Mon-Fri 9-6pm, but the last float on Mondays and
          Fridays is 4:30pm.

I asked her what it was like, and she said you float in high
density salt water at 95 degrees in an egg-shaped container.

They also do massage therapy, psycho-therapy, and colon-hydro
          therapy.

I'm going to try this next week, Laura. Thanks again for the
info - I didn't see anyplace like that in the Boston Yellow
          Pages.

If you don't make it all the way to California, Nancy, there's a tank
(or at least there *was* a tank) in Manitou, Colorado just outside
    Colorado Springs...

I've done it a couple of times -- it can do some strange (but nice)
    things to your head.

You really do feel weightless -- when it's time to get out, your entire
body feels like a heavy, limp sack of (wet) potatoes... I relax so
much that I actually gained about 3/4" in height between when I got in
and when I got out (unfortunately a low doorway is how I discovered
the gain in height. What a way to ruin a good float...)

I loved it, but it seems to be further down on the money priority list
    than other things lately.

                              Roak

Warning: if you're claustrophobic, take it easy -- you could
    potentially get quite scared...

    RE: .25, .23

You can be absolutely sure of any massage therapist who lists him/her
self as an AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) member. Or any
facility who lists that way, too. Most yellow pages now have a section
for "AMTA" and will list any therapist who so desires under that
    section.

In addition, if you live in a state that has licensing, (Mass. doesn't
now, but there's a bill in the legislature - currently depends on the
town's laws) a licensed therapist is a good bet.

You can also ask questions over the phone to determine if the
place/person is "legit". What type of massage do you do? (Swedish,
Sports, Shiatsu are typical types of massage) Do you do cross-gender
massage? (A good thing to know, if you care about it. Some places
don't allow it.) How long does your massage take? (50mins to 1.5 hrs is
    typical) Cost? ($25.00 - $50.00 is a typical range; I'd suggest that
for $50.00 you get extras like a whirlpool)

You can also always come right out and ask if this is a "sexual
    massage" or not.

A good therapist will also take a brief medical history and ask you
    your purpose in getting massage.

I'm always glad to answer questions about massage - send me mail if you
    have more.

Oh, hello. I'm sorry, I didn't hear you come in; I was busy picking
flowers. Oh yes, I recognize you! I'm glad you have decided to take
another visit at our flotation tank. As you can see, we have remodeled
the facilities since your last visit. I think the flowers definitely
add something to the decor. Feel free to pick them if you wish; we can
    always plant more.

You say you want to know what that is over there? I'm glad you asked.
We just purchased it at a discount from someone named Maxwell Smart.
We call it the Womannotes Cone of Silence. The original purpose of the
Cone of Silence was to prevent other people from hearing you, but of
course it works the other way as well. Whenever you want to shut
yourself off from all world's daily shouting, just lower the Cone of
    Silence over yourself.

You want to try it? Here, let me show you. Let me just press this
button here, and it will lower over both of us...there! Now as I was
saying--what? Sorry, I can't hear you! What? WHAT? WHAT?

We regret to announce that the Flotation Tank for this notes conference
has closed. We have appreciated your patronage, but unfortunately the
current business climate here is insufficiently robust to support a
flotation tank; specifically, we have found that we were unable to
sustain a peaceful environment in the context of this notes conference.

The closing of the Flotation Tank is indefinite, but subsequent climate
changes could lead to a reversal of this decision. We believe that we
could reopen the flotation tank either once the business climate in
this notes conference is able to sustain a haven from strife, or once
the climate in hell drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended
    period of time--whichever comes first.

It's amazing what you can find on the other side of a door: palm tress,
pelicans, white sand, green Gulf. That's what I can see from where I
sit on the porch of my little cottage. I'm sitting in the
white-enameled rocking chair sipping the white wine spritzer I just made
with cheap jug wine and a twist of orange peel. Out on the beach, a
few people are laying on the sand in the sun, some are sitting in
royal-blue canvas chairs, beneath umbrellas of the same color. A group
of laughing gulls are standing on a patch of beach, all facing one
direction, some relaxing on one foot. Down on the beach, the sand is
warm and gritty beneath my feet, it dusts my toes as I walk -- this is
what is called a "sugar beach" because the sand is so fine and white.
The rhythm of the surf is as lazy as a slow brush on a snare drum and
the beach here, close to the edge of the water, becomes a carpet of
shells. They jingle when the surf tosses them up and tumbles them,
then drags them back from where they came. There is a kind of shell
here called the jingle: the shells are very thin, hard, and shiny, and
are mostly colored white. Others are colored in light pastel shades of
yellow and pink; some are almost transparent. The sun is begining to
set; I think I'll just sit here on the beach and watch.
