762.0. "JOB SHARING Notesfile-Say YES!!" by USEM::DONOVAN () Fri Aug 25 1989 11:27

There is a note in TERZA::PARENTING asking for those interested
in a JOB SHARING notes file to speak up. I am asking all of you
womannoters, personally interested or not, to enter a positive reply
for those of us out there who could benefit.

762.1Confused, Please explain.CADSE::KHERFri Aug 25 1989 12:465
I'm confused. Can you elaborate what JOB SHARING notes file is
all about? By JOB SHARING do you mean working part-time?

    Thanks
    Manisha

re-1 Yes. It is for people sharing a job. Maybe it will get
into regular part-time jobs also. We can hope for the best.

The new version of the VTX JOBS book allows you to ook up part time
jobs. Access the jobs book and use the key word Part-Time.
Unfortunately there are often many positions that show up erroneously
because of typos eg: 04 hours instead of 40. Job share jobs *should* be
listed as 2- 20 hour jobs, this is up to the recruiter. If you know of
or see one that is posted as a 40 hour, give the call to the recruiter,
requet that they change the way that it is posted.

What is needed now is education and motivation. Most job sharing
opportunities are done on an exception basis. Rather than channeling
your energies toward a notes conference to announce these "exception"
jobs, I would (continue to) pursue channels that will allow managers to
more readily use Job sharing. The biggest issue being headcount. 2 part
    timers still = 2 headcount.

Hoping for change does nothing. Perseverance just might.

    Gail,
I can't think of any better "amunition" to take to a manager than
the name, DTN and qualifications of another person with whom your
    match would work.

In these days of reduced headcount, this notesfile could be a useful
tool. Useful to quite a few people as well as Digital's health as
    a company.

That's a good point Kate, but until that managers hands are untied of
the headcount issue, s/he can do little. I beleive that the issue *has*
to be driven down from upper managers. That kind of push doesn't happen
in our management structure. How do the people that would benefit most
from such a change make that change? I don't know. But if consensus is
what it takes, the effected partys best get their collective voice
heard by as many people as possible. DEC is aware of the issue, maybe
they are waiting for a crisis.

I'm not against the idea, I'm really trying to interject reality.

Gail,
How do we help with the headcount issue? I've heard from my management that it
is the biggest thing impeding them from being more flexible. Any idea where the
issue is, and what we can do to help it along?

well, i'm not gail, and i'm not sure this will help a lot, since i
don't have a contact name, but...

i have heard that a task force has been formed in corporate
personnel to look at reporting headcount in full time
equivalents. this reporting change will be phased-in over the
next year or so. the details seem to be a bit sketchy,
apparently it's in the early stages of development. you might
want to contact your personnel people to see if they've heard
about it.

I don't have the answer either. But you have the ambition to follow
through I suggest moving through local personnel ranks as well as
CFO2, corporate personnel offices. If they don't have the answer, maybe
they can lead you to someone that does.

762.9"Part-Time" notesfile for part time work discussionLYRIC::BOBBITTinvictus maneoMon Oct 09 1989 15:026
I'm not sure if this is identical to a JOB-SHARING notesfile, but
I'm sure it will discuss job sharing. A new PART-TIME notesfile
has been created, and can be found at ZONULE::PART-TIME.
