| Hey, Amos, congrats ! The first two weeks will be tough,
then your taste buds will rise from the dead and you'll
never want another smoke.
I know, I'm the eldest son of the eldest son, I have the
gift of prophecy. Besides, I quit many years ago :-)

| Good for you! I quit almost fifteen years ago and haven't really
missed it. A friend of mine quit almost that long ago and still
misses smoking. Sure hope you have the former experience, not
the latter!
Adding my congrats...

| Amos,
I'm probably the most impulsive person alive...My kids love when
I go to the mall they know I won't give them money to just throw
away so they like point me in the dirction of the pinball machines
and works everytime! I start playing and I give them a couple bucks
to leave me alone with the ball.
ell when I quit smoking about twenty years ago Iand have never
regretted it yet and probably the only reason I never started again
is that I didn't want to have to quit again.
congratulations and good luck with healthier life,

| Amos,
Congratulations on quiting smoking, I hope that its easier than
you expect it to be.
I'd also like to commend you practicing what you preach. Lots of
people (me included sometimes) are all talk and no action.

Amos,
I am with you since yesterday. I too quit smoking ! (Yes, now
everyone knows). I did it for 3 months a couple of years ago
and indeed, I can't wait to get back to the point where I
actually taste what I eat; it's a great experience.
So, I'll be checking "751" over the coming period whenever I
feel weak and longing for a "fag". I'll keep you and the others
posted on where I am and how I feel, you do the same, OK ?
Good luck ! :-{ -> :-| -> :^) -> :^D

| Congratulations, Amos! It's not everyone who makes such a personal
link between principle and action.
And congrats to you, Marcel (.10), too, and very best wishes for
permanent success this time 'round!. As someone else who hasn't smoked
in 20 years, I can only tell you that it gets better and better with
time.

751.12 | Persist! It does get easier. | VAXWRK::GOLDENBERG | Ruth Goldenberg | Mon Aug 21 1989 22:22 | 9 |
| Congratulations and best wishes for continued strength to both of you!
I can tell you that the first few weeks are the worst and that it
_does_ get easier to resist. I took up sugarfree bubble gum and
avoided going out to restaurants for a year or so - I had some of my
strongest desires to smoke sitting around at a restaurant and didn't
feel I could get away with blowing bubbles at the table };)

751.13 | Try a little fruit juice. | SHAPES::MALITORISK | KERRY | Thu Aug 24 1989 05:39 | 19 |
| Wishing you all the best from another ex-smoker. I thought you
might like a few helpful tips for when the going gets tough. When
I quit smoking, I read everything I could about the effects of nicotine
dependency and how to conteract, etc. Some articles claimed that
high acidic juices cause some of the same chemical reactions in
the body as nicotine does without the dependency. The articles
recommended dringing small glasses of juice when the urge for a
cigarette strikes. If you live in the States, try getting some
of those small juice boxes to keep in your desk at work. The juices
that seemed to work for me were cranberry and grapefruit. The juices
keep you from picking at higher calorie foods when the oral urge
gets to you. I was also afraid that I would gain weight when I
quit. Using the juices helped avoid that and I never developed
the 'chewing gum' habit. Just make sure you don't start chewing
the straws from the juice carton. Good luck. It's been ten years
for me and I don't miss it any more.

751.17 | Gave 'em up too. | CURIE::MOEDER | | Wed Aug 30 1989 19:46 | 14 |
| I, too, was two packs a day for fifteen years. Gave it up in '78 and
glad I did.
I don't miss them, but I travel, occasionally, and when I'm alone, a
thousand miles from home, it's late, and I'm in the hotel lounge, I
miss 'em. If anyone then offered one, I would have a hard time
declining.
While I was smoking, however, I enjoyed it. That is what made it so
hard!
I gave 'em up via SmokeEnders.
