742.0. "Woman Cadet" by SAFETY::TOOHEY () Fri Aug 11 1989 16:03
Kristin Baker recently became the first woman to be selected to
serve as first captain of the Corps of Cadets, the highest cadet
honor bestowed by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Excerpt from Boston Globe:
She deserves the distinction, according to every criterion.
Besides her acedemic and sports accomplishments-soccer and cross-
country skiing- she was signled out for her military prowess and
ability to lead.
Her appointment is all the more remarkable, since West Point
began admitting women only in 1976- and they make up only 15 percent
of the 4,400 students.
"She does not have the position because she's a woman," said
Gen. Dave Palmer, superintendent of West Point. "she has it because
she emerged during the selection process in her own right."
Congratulations, Cadet Kristin Baker!
