| re .0:
It's a shame to work hard at losing weight all week and then waste
those good efforts with an admittedly wonderful treat, such as the
ones mentioned here. The problem, Kate, is that after you empty
your fat cells during the week, the little buggers are just
waiting to fill up again. And the worst type of foods are the
ones with lots of fat: made with butter or cream (including fudge
and frosting and ice cream--and the best brands of ice cream, like
Ben & Jerry's, have the highest amounts of fat) or cheese (sic
transit cheesecake).
That's the bad news. If you're willing to compromise, you could
try to find something that doesn't have much (or any!) fat, that
is still delicious. For example, there are some great frozen
yogurts around -- TCBY stores have first-rate nonfat flavors, and
lan chocolate (4% fat, I think) tastes like a great gelato.
These treats (as well as heartier things like spaghetti) aren't
usually part of a weightloss diet, but they're not nearly so
counterproductive as the foods with high fat content.
Good luck in trying to find a balance between the stuff that will
be suggested in this topic and the stuff that will help you take
off some pounds.

Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk Ice Cream.
Well, last year, my wife mentioned she had tasted this
and really liked it (she doesn't really like ice cream
that well).
So, it was a couple of days before her birthday. First,
I called all the places in Nashua and surrounding areas
to see if they had any. No luck.
So, I called Ben and Jerry's in Vermont and asked for the
closest store. Turned out to be Keene, NH. I drove from
Nashua to Keene and back for 4 pints of this ice cream.
That was her birthday present. She really loved it.

| Re: .0
I have had a weight problem ever since I can remember. I don't
know what type of diet you are following, but the diet I have
been most successful with is the one that I'm on now; that's
weight watchers. A year ago June 1 my weight was 177 pounds
(and a size 16-18), by October 12 (1988) I declared my goal weight
at 146 pounds (and a size 12). Since then I've been on the
maintenance program and I'm currently at 139 pounds (and a size
10-12). As part of weight watchers you can have 500 Optional
calories a week while you ar losing weight, and 1000 Optional
calories a week on maintenance. Using those you can treat yourself
as many times as your optional calorie limit allows. Although
some of the suggestions given in the responses would use ALL of
the optional calories a week, I think the program works on the
premise that we need to have a treat once in a while in order
to be able to live with a weight maintenance program.
Good luck with your diet. I hope you loose all your weight soon!

9000? You're kidding! How could you consume that much in one day?
You could eat hot fudge sundaes all day long and still not reach 9000
calories! If you also mix in healthy foods, which tend to be lower in
calories, I don't even see how you could fit that much in your stomach
and still have time to do things like work or sleep! If it worked for
you, you are lucky...it doesn't matter how much I exercised, if I increased
my caloric intake by 5 or 6 times, I would gain weight. (If I remember
correctly, biking works off about 200 calories per hour over mere
existence. Assuming your maintenance calorie intake is about 2500 for
an average lifestyle [typical for a man] you'd have to bike over 30 hours
a day to work off the excess!)

reply mentioned that he had been riding 45 miles a day
for a couple of weeks. I assume that he is not in the

stage races as the Tour de France, et. al., eat about
9000 calories a day. I'll assume as did Jody that he
just has a higher metabolism.

| We ate 6 meals a day: Breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch,
afternoon snack, dinner, and midnight snack. It was hard to eat
enough, but when I didn't I felt weak, and had a hard time riding
up hills.
As for caloric useage, the numbers I've seen are about 650
cal/hour for riding at 13 miles an hour. So about 50 cal/mile. So
we should have needed 2500 extra calories for the 50 mile days,
but those numbers are for rolling terrain and unloaded bikes. We
were carrying about 50 lbs. of gear in the Rockies, so you can
probably double those numbers to get 5000 calories/day. We hit
some sleet, so you have to add a lot of calories to keep warm. Add
those to my somewhat over 2500 base calories/day to exist, and it
just about works out.
The really neat thing was when I came back and was on my normal
ride home from work, the hill halfway home had disappeared. I knew
there was a hill on the route, but I just didn't feel it after the
trip. That made the commute even more fun.

| I was in Nyack, NY this past weekend and stopped at Temptations.
They have only homemade ice cream and deserts. I had the chocolate
cake with rasberry filling, topped with whip cream to cut the chocolate.
Not only are the deserts delicious, but the 6 foot display case
is something to drool over. The chocolate cake (I got the first
slice) has an icing that has such a gloss you can almost see your
reflection. On top of that is shaved chocolate arranged so to look
like a carnation. The shaved chocolate is then sprinkled with powdered
sugar. It was almost a shame to cut into it.
I previously had the pecan pie with vanilla ice cream and next time
I'll try the white chocolate cake.
In addition:
Cannolis - Corky's in East Hartford makes the best I've ever had
They prepare them fresh when you place your order.
Godiva Chocolate - especially the truffles
Hagen Diaz - Swiss Almond Vanilla
Fried Ice Cream - had this once at Cathedral Farms Restaurant in Delhi, NY
and finally when I've got calories to spare - homemade Toll House
cookies, hot from the oven with cold milk.
Well, that certainly worked up an appetite!

In 1987 and 1988, a friend and I rode 130 miles in a day and

Bonnie,
Sounds like my stepfather. He grew up on a farm, where
every evening meal was a feast (more or less). After he
married my mother, we started having meat, potatoes, gravy
(and sometimes gravy bread) almost every night. At first,
he did not believe spaghetti, chili, or any non-meat-
potatoes-gravy meal was a meal. Of course, Mom basically
said, "You can eat what's on the table or go to the
restaurant, it doesn't matter to me." She still says
she hates to cook, although my family and my brother
think she's a great cook. Her response: "You've eaten
my cooking for so long you don't know what good food
is.
Anyway, I'll go with you father. We can sit down and
have some bread, potatoes and gravy.
