726.0. "looking for my father" by VIDEO::CONNELLY () Tue Aug 01 1989 14:19

    I am trying to find my father, whom I have not seen for 25 years. How
    should I go about doing this, if I don't want to go through an agency?
    The only clue I have is that he is probably living in Indiana now.
    (I've already checked Indiana phone books with no luck) How could I
    get his social security number? This seems to be the key to it all.
    Do you have any suggestions for me?

    Have you contacted the Salvation Army? I have heard that they
    will search for lost relatives for you.

    I'm not sure, but if he served in the military, you might
    also get some help from the veterans administration...

726.3...have you checked with credit card companies?ERLANG::TEMP_SECWed Aug 02 1989 14:494
    Wouldn't the Social Security Administration be able to help? What was
    his last address? You don't know of any relatives?

    How about a freedom of information request to the Indiana Dept.
    of motor vehicles?
    Would be a small fee and 6-7 week wait I think.

    They can provide current address or indicate if he moved out of
    state, etc.

    Be sure to send any letter Certified/address verification, *the
    works* so you have a signature also.
    Do you have anything he signed?

    Best of luck-

726.5newspaper article?VIDEO::CONNELLYWed Aug 02 1989 16:3621
    Well, I wrote to the Indiana DMV about 1 year ago, but I don't know his
    birthdate, and they wouldn't give me any information without that and
    his SSN.. seems like going in circles.

    I have nothing he signed.

    I don't know of his relatives either- I'll have to check on that.

    The social security administration wasn't much help either- Perhaps I
    just spoke with the wrong department, but they would not give me any
    information..

    re: .1

    I called the salvation army and they are sending me a "missing person"
    request form to fill out. Thanks for that idea.

    Suppose he were in a newspaper article about 10 years ago- in another
    state. Would the Boston Public Library have it on microfiche? Anyone
    ever done a search like that before?

726.6depends on the town... you may get luckySCARY::M_DAVISDictated, but not read.Wed Aug 02 1989 16:385
    The New York Times is on fiche back a century; don't know how the Globe
    works... I would imagine their "morgue" is for their own use, but they
    may make exceptions.

    local paper near clearwater, florida.

    In that case, I'd check with the newspaper in Clearwater and see what
    they have for a "morgue". Yes, that's what they call it. See if they
    open it up to the public.

    Forgive my ignorance, but if he married your mother, his birth date
    should be on the marriage licence.

    If that doesn't work, you can always write to Ann Landers.
726.10There is help availableSONATA::ERVINRoots & Wings...Thu Aug 03 1989 09:4111
    Also, if your mother and father were married at the time of your birth,
    his date of birth should be on the long form of your birth certificate.

    Also, there are independent search consultants and agencies that can
    help. If you want information, let me know and I'll send you some
    names of resources.

726.11try the Clearwater libraryTLE::RANDALLliving on another planetThu Aug 03 1989 12:3812
    The library in Clearwater, Florida, would also be an excellent
    resource. Most local libraries either keep local newspapers in
    their archives (fiche or real) or know where you can find it, and
    most librarians love to dig out obscure information.

    Most newspaper morgues are open for research. You sometimes have
    to complete a form saying why you want in -- sort of like applying
    for a library card -- and only go during certain hours, but
    usually they'll let you in. The main users are generally
    historians, writers, and private detectives.

726.12Ask your local genealogistsSUPER::HENDRICKSThe only way out is throughThu Aug 03 1989 18:0810
    Put a note in the genealogy notes file. Several people have enlisted
    the help of the Digital genealogy addicts in searching for relatives
    quite successfully. The level of expertise in records searching in that
    file is truly amazing!

    Hi,

    Thanks everyone for your ideas..

    re: .9- I've got their marriage license, and neither of their
    birthdates is on it, nor SSNs! Seems crazy to me, but I guess they
    didn't start requiring that information until later. (both their ages
    are listed.)

    re: .10- I've also got my birth certificate, and perhaps it's not the
    long form, because there's no birthdate or SSN information on that
    either. I will contact John's Hopkins and see if they have another on
    file.

    re: .12- thanks, Holly- I will add my note to the Geneology file.

    The Clearwater library is an excellent idea. That could perhaps get me
    an address or something to start.

726.16College alumni officeWJO::GRAYTue Aug 15 1989 12:1011
    My first time in WNOTES!

    Having just been reunited with my father after 23 years (!) I was drawn
    to your note. Anyway, I once discovered that college alumni
    organizations are great for keeping up with their alums -- I worked in
    a college office where the wife was abandoned by her husband -- no
    trace of him. But.... his mail was returned to the alumni office with
    a yellow sticker and his new address. If your father graduated from
    college, maybe this will help. Good luck!
    As an afterthought, how about the Internal Revenue Service?

    so after 23 years, what was it like? (If you don't mind my asking) Is
    it better to know?.. whether it's good or bad?
